I have been playing online games since the days of MUDS. Many of you dont know what a mud is or if you do never really played one.
I remember my first MUD like yesterday. But even before that day I played basically tabletop multiplayer online worlds through the old school talk city. In that we had amazing freedom. Yes there where character classes and limitations but if we could imagine it we could attempt it.
Now on to what I really want to see. More imagination needs to come to the games. And I dont even mean from the developers. The problem with MMO's today is they are made to be money sinks and thats all the devs care about. This is why we have seen a stagnant amount of MMO's that are just clones with a pretty rapper of the same boring stuff we all have tired of.
I have played just about every MMO on the market, P2P F2P Browser Based etc.... The same thing is always evident. There is nothing there to make community envolvement fun and player events worth our time.
The idea I have is actually for a game to be made with certain features either from other games I have played or just want to see.
Fully Dynamic Persistant World/Universe. Witch is truely effected by players descitions.
No class system, Based on maximum skill points allowed to be spent. Using a skill system somewhat like UO. However different. The basic Idea here is A player can have A certain amount of points spent on combat/magic/support skills that would be in a party for battle. Swords/Axes/Shield/Armortypes/etc. Enough to make a full out class if you wanted to go with a traditional archetype but can be completely custom to what the character wants to play as. With this adding the ability to deactivate a skill instead of having to unlearn it to learn another skill. For Instance I spend a month raising my Broadsword skill and I want to try out Maces now. I can deactivate my Broadsword skill to use maces. This effectively gives me back my skill points but allows me to not have wasted the time I spent. Leaving my broadsword at a registered 0 level. This way you can experience all types of play on one character. Crafting/Social would also have a specific set amount of skill points. With the same deactivation settings. Unlimited universal skills would be things like swimming, terrain negotiation, free falling..etc..
What I call the rumors system for later stage questing and raiding. In any tavern/inn either player city owned or NPC owned would have a keeper who would tell players about rumors he has heard. this leads to starting a randomly generated quest that is based on the players skills. If a player is at 50% if his total adventurer skill cap. he would get what could be considered a level 50 skill. It would also take into consideration the size of the party. With this if a party is in a raid group. 3 parties of 6 players per group. The quest would be to take over some kind of enemy encampment.
What you see is what you get. I am so tired of the unrealistic loots in games. I kill a fish and find a treasure chest 5 times the size of the fish. Come on. I want to see loot come to MMO's like it is in games like Oblivion. If the enemy has it you can loot it encluding every stitch of clothing/armor they are wearing. If I kill a bear all I should be able to loot is hide, bone and teeth. If I kill a vagabond I should be able to loot everything he was wearing, whatever weapons he was using, his gold pouch, his jewel pouch, and whatever foods he was carrying.
Fully Customizable Characters, I am truely sick and tired of the asian game developers community. 3 faces 8 hairs without color selection, or legnth selection. Go and play Project entropia just to see the player creation tools. Thats how to make truely custom characters. Another sickness I have with the asian developers community is limiting races/sexes to certain professions. I mean come on people we are not in the middle ages and these are not the real world they are fantasy. Give us something to work with we might actually play your game for more than 3 months.
Intuitive in world player housing. I am sick and tired of instanced player housing, or even the complete lack of player housing. In todays day and age with the technology we have. Its very easy to make a world encompass hundreds if not thousands of miles of terrain. and Using basic land ownership we can easily have player housing where every players home is unique. This will help us as players to build a community.
Fully Player Driven Economy. Everything in the game can be crafted by the players and sold by them in there own personal shops. There can also be merchants who buy a number of items from the crafters to sell them. The many different models for this is limitless. However starting the game with a few low end npc merchants to help all players get started on the way to becoming a fully player sufficient game economy.
Mounts/Vehicles. This is self explanitory. A frickin horse does not cost 2400000gold peices in any world. Stop making games where mounts are considered to be worth more than armor. guess what horses are wild animals that can be captured. That should be a skill in the game. Beast Capturing, Taming and Training should be included in the social skills. This should not be limited to low level creatures either. I wanna see someone capture a dragon.........
Guild Owned land. Depending on the size of the guild determines the amount of land the guild can own. On this can be a guild hall or fort or maybe a guild farm. Prime realty could start guild wars.
PVP. this is a touchy subject for just about everyone. 3 levels of PVP Optional. Players can select there envolvement in PVP. However changing your PVP setting takes 5 minutes to move up a level and 30 to move down.
--Level 1 is no PVP. this means no one can attack this player they are purely PVE and dont have to deal with declining duel requests over and over.
--Level 2 is Light PVP which means the player can duel and but cannot perform a death blow or recieve one, it is required to request a duel to fight people on this level and the request has to be accepted within 60 seconds or its auto declined.
--Level 3 is Full PVP which is just as it sound, no requests are needed to fight on this level unless one of the participants are on level 2. There names will be in red so others know they are full PVP. Full PVPers corpses remain where they fall for 5 minutes and is only lootable by the person who killed them. There will be experience lost in all combat related skills that are active at the rate of 1/4th of the amount needed to level the skill. They can fight level 2 but cannot be deathblowed or deathblow a level 2 PVPer.
This should actually please just about everyone when it comes to PVP. I know it wont please everyone but it is the best way to try and include everyone in the game.
Anyways you get the basic picture. with this system the player is free to do whatever but still limited by skill caps. However this basic idea would give players all the tools necessarry to build a community where the players actually interact. I only hope we actually find some developers with the balls to be community driven and try something like this out.
Hey feel free to add your thoughts on this. And your own Features you want to see. I know the developers around the world will probably not look at it and probably wont ever follow the basic ideas but who knows we might get lucky.

MUDS in various forms have been around since the '80s, hell they are still around and still played.

mlauzon I know what muds are. I was simply saying that most of the current generation of gamers dont.
And I truely hope to see more diversity in MMO's coming in the days and years to come. Its truely tiring going through all these MMO's only to find NONE give us the community tools we need. SWG used to but with the CU and NGE they quickly took it all away.
UO had a great community and so did shadowbane. However those games are greatly outdated and Shadowbane is being shut down in July of this Year.
Ultima Online is not worth paying for anymore. After 12 years the game should be F2P especially since they never upgraded the engine.
Anarchy online was fun for about 2 months. Horizons had some of the features but did not have the content. Every game falls short. I did not even discuss content in the OP. Because this basic system could be used in any setting. I mean If I could I would buy Shadowbane, Ultima Online, Dark And Light and bring all 3 of those games back to the forefront of the MMO market. To bad I am not rich enough to do that.
OMG and I only wish I could buy SWG and show SOE how to really build a community with there own product.
Basically I am looking for an MMO with vast community Involvement. And Player Customization. Player Housing is one of my favorite features and 90% of games either ignore it or botch it.
