Please do your research before commenting on a subject like this as if you know everything, if you had you'd realize that the reason a certain MMO is making billions is because of the huge marketing campaign it pulled to get interest outside of the usual playerbase.
If you did your research you'd also realize that the Games Industry is in fact very young and has only been going for a decade or two, so its way too early to even say crap like that since we haven't reached enough people who might be interested in player games.
And frankly with all these games coming out that just revolve around killing x number of enemies to reach a goal and in such boring fashions too I predict that we're going to have to deal with another decade of notably boring and generic games until either the publishers churning them out die off or we get some good indie companies taking up the helm again like the good old days.

Either you quoted the wrong sentence - very possible, since you have it out of context, without its supporting statements - or you're under the impression that sentence means something other than what it says.

    Cheers!

Do we need special roleplay rulesets ? To be honest I think not. To roleplay is a user perference and its up to the user to represent him or herself. The developers have given you access to a world of wonder all layed out with all the game mechanics ad tools you need to portray yourself as a hero. All you need to do is find like minded compatriots who are also into the roleplaying scene. One reason roleplayers often get a cold shoulder is because of the small subset of bad roleplayes these are the players who join a non roleplaying party and try to enforce a roleplaying ruleset on them (refusing to join in fights or sometime dragging the party into certain doom because according to their backstory they will hit anything that wears blue). After this happens to you a few times you start avoiding roelplayers like they had the plague.

However this is not all one sided a non-reoleplayer who joins a roleplaying group should either accept it and be the silent type or join in and who knows have fun.

But back to the main everything you need to roleplay is provided the fact that there are silly names can be ignored. The fact that some people talk in character and some dont can be adapted. Use your imagination and relax and enjoy yourself. Your wandering through an enchanted world stop and smell the roses. Pause and have a pint at your local whilst talking about your adventures in the legendary mines of salt goblins. BUT whenb your in the mines remember your a professional, in reality if you were a warrior you would not stop every 5 minutes to have a 10 minute discuss on how elegently you sit down. There is a time and  a pace for everything and roleplaying is best done when yiou have time.

I remember in EQ one a lot of people roleplayed during the downtime between fights and you know it was fun !

    just my 2 cents

And you have an awesome two cents. It's idealistic, but it's based on sound reasoning and logic.

It is not, unfortunately, how many roleplayers see things. When LOTRO came out, the roleplayers were very up in arms about there not being a designated RP server. When other MMOs offered RP servers, roleplayers were very vocal about the servers being "lip service" and nothing more than just some basic name policing.

I disagree.  There's no "wonder" in today's worlds.  Nor do the game mechanics lend themselves to good RP these days.  The games are designed to be fast-paced and combat-centric, and everything not conducive to that end is cut out.  Nor are the tools very good for RP these days.  I mean, it's tough to find an MMO these days where you even have the option to walk instead of run.

We were the majority, before MMOPRG’s became really popular after WoW was launched. Now we are the minority, MMO's increase in gaming market share has ushered in our demise.

Well, power gaming (leveling, getting epics, progression ...) is way more fun to the many than reading stories. That is why Diablo is so popular. The whole MMORPG phenomenon is really about feeling powerful and status.

Luckily, i am NOT one of the "we" you are talking about. And to be honest, this style is already there WAY before WOW. I played EQ since beta, and EQ is 100% catered to power gaming. WOW just add polish, more interesting and more accessible.

Totally agree with you. What I was trying to indicate was the effect on MMO's of WoW bringing in more gamers from other genres, like Diablo etc. The game designers now take into account their desires more than ours. But certainly the power structure etc was allways there, its just a shift in design and support focus totaly away form RPing to them.
