Don't think twitch based combat in an MMORPG will work - play Mount and Blade first...

I have an oblivion mod that makes the combat a bit more challenging.

Last night I was (finally! I had the expansion since it was released and never played it through!) going through shivering Isles and was up against one of the frog like creatures with the small blades and shields.

I have to say they are tough fights!

I was marveling at the blocking and how difficult it was to break through their shield use. I have to say that I personally thoroughly enjoyed it as most mmo games have fights that are a bit too fast for my taste. Not speed/attacking "fast" but the encounter is over before it begins.

Personally I do like faster combat. I wish LOTRO and Vanguard has faster combat.

However, I don't think anyone is saying (@ the OP) that twitch based combat doesn't work. Or more to the point, there are people who don't care about the combat and are more interested in the story of the game. The combat is just part of the story. I know I have problems understanding these people as I love combat but there it is.

The other issue is latency and how that affects combat. That is the only thing that might be at issue. I don't know how online fps games have handled it.

Well, they do as AoC and instances. When not more than 128 players play on the same zone latency is not a big trouble.

But there is of course different solutions, like minimize the information you are sending.

But I think we will have to live with the fact that until the net gets faster we have to instance this type of games or have rather small servers. But Df is not doing either of that, maybe they are on to something (or maybe the game laggs a lot).

I LOVE M&B and have logged quite a few hours playing it.  That being said I think it's major weak point is unmounted combat.  Only being able to swing four ways and not use combo's when on horseback is fine.  For the most part it makes sense.  But when on the ground I think the combat is incredibly boring.  Having to actively block and parry but without the ability to string together combo's for offense i find myself getting bored quickly.

    -Currently looking forward to FFXIV

-Currently playing EvE and Global Agenda

M&B combat is nice in theory, and at first made you go "Hhmmm".  But it got boring so fast.  It felt slow and eventually became tedious.  Really bad animation didn't help either.  In the end, with no real story, the game didn't seem worth it at all, except to mess around for a couple of hours.

Couldn't see the combat system working at all in a MMO, unless it was heavily instanced.  The timing you'd need for blocking would require AMAZING ping times.  If I couldn't trust what I was seeing, the system is a total waste.  Tt ONLY works on trusting what you're looking at.  If there any delay, it falls apart.

I'll assume you hated Morrowind, Oblivion, Gothic, Ultima Underworld, Arx Fatalis, Deus Ex and all the other CRPG's that used twitch combat.

shit not even the might and magic series (not heroes of m&m) had twitch-like combat.

at least you dont have to spend hours hitting STUPID ASS 1,2,3 buttons over and over like a fucking retard. that's not tactics or strategy. that's boring. we've got too many of those games already, time to try something else.

M&B have the best combat system of all games i have tryed. I did play it since it was just a arena or something back in 2005 or 2006. Got a free copy when they did release it : )

I guess I needed SOMETHING to do until the next batch of MMOG's comes out.

    You're welcome....

I bought M&B when it was in early development. We're talking v.0.075; black nights, the salt mine slavers, Zendar, the works. I've been playing for years. I have almost never gotten bored with it, which is hardly surprising considering all of the mods you can download (Star Wars, viking, Lego, any theme you can think of). I even spent a while developing mods that catered to my own desires, introducing me to 3D modelling for the first time. The community really is top notch. Sure there are idiots, but the majority of folks contribute positively.

Mount & Blade has the second most exciting combat system I've ever played with. The rush you get when you're running around in first-person, and you take a pot shot at a mounted Khergit riding around your troops, only to see him flop off the back of his horse with an arrow sticking through his skull(I love ragdoll). The epic fail you feel when you're charging a line of peasants with little health left, and one of them throws a dagger at your face and kills you. You ragdoll to the ground in first-person with a knife stuck in your field of view. This game makes me feel like no other.

As far as combat animations being boring: first off, try the Expanded gameplay 3 mod. Second, are you more concerned with how pretty your swing looks, or if the bandit you're swinging at is within your weapon's range? People bitch and moan about graphics far too much. PLAY the game. If the graphics aren't to your liking, download the graphic enhancement mods.

M&B combat in an MMO? No, as it was said before, any lag would result in death. That's why Warband will be implementing multiplayer, not massively multiplayer.

That said, I think M&B is one of those games that anyone who likes player-skill-based combat should try.

I wish I could remember where I first heard about it though...

    dramatic Viking battle

    pretty good review

(sadly I couldn't find any decent footage of first person combat, because everyone's a sissy and plays third person)

It's free(with level cap), so might as well give it a try.

Before it is said...no Darkfall does not have Mount and Blade combat mechanics.   Neither does Mortal Online.    Had to get that out of the way.
Seriously though.   It would be incredibly awesome to see a game like Vanguard or Age of Conan use the Mount and Blade combat system.   I do not know how they would handle magic...maybe they would have to come up with a whole new magic system for such a game...but the melee, ranged and combat from horeback would definitely rock!
Look...download the free demo of Mount and Blade and see how combat in MMORPGs should be.
Mount and Blade  <<<< download demo here.

I get the impression that she likes Mount and Blade. I mean she says Mount and Blade some 7 times total. Most people don't use the word "if" in as many sentences as that, Mount and Blade.

Seriously I think she Mount and Blade really likes the game known only as Mount and Blade.

Talking like that hurts my brains so I'm going to Mount and Blade it outta this thread.

Just because Mount&Blade is a phenomenal game doesn't mean it will work in an MMO.

Multiplayer, yes. Massive scale MMO - no.

Hit detection is an extremely important factor in a competitive game and I haven't seen an MMO get it right yet.

Darkfall has a really good hit detection but only one hitbox; you can hit someone in their big toe for the same amount of damage as hitting them in the head.

I'm interested in seeing how Mortal Online's combat system will pan out. It's certainly perked my interest.

Aoc use a way of this system too. But it shouldnt be much harder to also signal where you hit, you don't need so many locations 6 or 7 should be enough.

Personally I want to take away hit points from the body and put them in the armor instead. In reality a hit on the body will in best case make you move slower and in worst case kill you. An armor however can actually take quite a lot of punishment.

Once you are thru the armor you should use some kind of critical hit table to decide how much it actually hurts and add that as an effect.
