What do you think the relative percentages are of players who make their "homes" (mainly operate in) high, low and null sec space?
When I first started reading these threads it seemed like the game revolved around null sec and high sec was for newbies, but now that Im playing I see that many, many people spend all their time in high sec and enjoy it. Even really experienced players.

"According to our studies, just under half of all characters in EVE stay within the high security areas."

Yep, read the various QENs...they pretty much nail it. Something like 10% or less routinely live in nullsec, significantly more than half mostly live in high-sec and the rest float back and forth.
A good amount of Eve's playerbase stay in high sec.
Imo it's closer to 70% than 50%. I've always said if it wasn't for Eves safer space "Empire" they would have a very small playerbase compared to what they have today.
Empire space gives people the freedom to play the way they want while not being totally harassed 23/7.
You have high sec mining and other industrial proffs and Level 4 mission running, lucritive exploration (Combat sites, Gas Mining, Hacking, Arch). You could also join a pvp corp in high sec that specializes in War Decs.
Eves Empire space is a MMO onto itself. While I personally find it a waste to stay in one area of the universe I know quite a few that stay in high sec 23/7 and Enjoy themselves.
Playing: EvE, Ryzom
Good question.
It seems to me sometimes that Null sec is the least "sandbox" area of the game in allot of ways. If you are to survive there you have to have the right skills, mentality, alliance.....The game itself places allot of requirements on people there in term of defence and logistics. I know it is where much of the PVP takes place but in all other ways it seems to me people in empire and low-sec are the ones that are truely free to do what they want when they want.
I think it's the other way round.
One example: Try to make a little t1 frig tournament in empire space. It's horribad with all those arbitrary flagging mechanics.
Another one: Try to punish someone, or escape from someone harassing you. In 0.0 it's easy..get some friends, blow him up. In empire, he can hide under concord protection and grief you.
The lack of many arbitrary game restrictions in 0.0 allow everyone to do what they want, the only limitation being the players themselves.
I don't really want to start splitting hairs over the word "sandbox", but my definition of a sandbox game is a game that cuts down rules to an absolute minimum, allowing for the most possible range of actions to be taken by players.
That, of course, includes that you have the choice between empire and 0.0.
Keep in mind that there is a fair amount of NPC 0.0 out there.
That has been my playground in eve for years. You get many of the benefits of 0.0 life without the hassles of big asshat alliances.

look it this way
main in 00 1 alt in jita 1 alt in rens 66% yours chars are in empire
most of 00 players have one alt in empire so this numbers are not preaty good (

What are the rewards? What are the dangers?
Guys the QEN articles are from CCP themselves. If they say that just under 50% stay in highsec 100% of the time then that's true. It's a reasonable number... roughly half the players in the game probably never ever leave empire... whether they be alts or mains isn't really the point... half the denizens of the game (so around 150,000 characters) never leave highsec empire. The rest either live in lowsec, live in 0.0 or transit the three locations routinely.
They also have stats on how many people make their "homes" in 0.0 and how many make their "homes" in lowsec... so if you go dig those numbers up you'll find all the answers you seek without all this blind speculation which serves no purpose other than... well... speculation without basis in fact.
The facts are out there. If you really care what they are, go read them

What are the rewards? What are the dangers?
We made many billions essentially with exploration in NPC 0.0. You have to be self-sufficient and an excellent diplomat to live in NPC 0.0... but you get access to much better loot, rats, and (exploration) ores.
The dangers are all of those associated with living in 0.0. Anyone and everyone is trying to kill you. If you piss a lot of people off, you'll get killed so much you won't be able to make any cash as an independent corp (there are alliances and lynch mobs in NPC space too), but if you get a few blues out there and cooperate a bit you can get a nice operation going.
If you want to enjoy the whole part of the game that POS and 0.0 life without selling your soul to some big alliance in sov space, NPC space rocks. W-space is a new option but the logistics there are a real pain in the ass- that's a topic for another thread.
