Sit outside, take in the air, smell the grass. Just sit, relax.

Not many things you can do "real quick" that wouldn't be more harmful than the intended use of relaxing. With all quick pick-me-ups there is quick put-me-down-worse-than-where-I-started.

It's 1:43 AM here in the UK, so going outside is out of the question. Thanks anyway for the prompt reply.

Here's a trick I used alot in grad/ professional school.

Doesn't work for everyone, but it did for me.

Convince yourself that the exam doesn't matter.  Really, honestly find a way to believe it. Get something or some place that you love in your mind and think about it.  Take a hot shower if you can.

Are you cramming information that you've never been over before or are you reviewing stuff that you've already covered? Or are you done studying and just can't sleep?

The answer to those questions would determine my next bit of advice.

You can control your emotions to a degree with breath control. A classic is:

Inhale and count 4, hold your breath and count 4, exhale and count 4 and then hold 4 again. So you have 4 x 4 cycle. Keep that, while sitting upright and relaxed, eyes closed. No music, as silent as you can. It takes some concentration. You may vary the timing, 5-3-5-3 or such. The regularity is the key.

Another technique is mantra meditation. Take a sentence in a language you dont understand. Thats the key, so you dont think about it. A classic is the sanskrit manta "OM MANI PADME HUM". Again sit upright & relaxed. Take a slow brath in, hold a second, and slowly, hummingly utter the mantra, so like your body vibrates from the voice.

Do either a couple of minutes.

Sit down and close your eyes and picture yourself taking the test...go over it and over it tel you get it right.relax.

What I do when I have an exam is go to bed early and make sure that I get a proper sleep. That will help during the examination because you will wake up relaxed.

    Give a friend/relative of yours a 2x4.

Now ask them to slam it on your head as hard as they can.

    Problem solved.

When I was going for my AS degree, I was working full time and going at night.  I found out I did better on my exams by cramming hours before the exam.  This way, it was fresh in my mind.  When you are working full time framing houses, you dont have time to relax.  Once I got home, I would hit the books then take the exam that night and keep my fingers crossed....LOL

My GPA wasnt that good.  I graduated with a 3.17.

The problem with cramming is you don't get long term retention.  I learned a semester's worth of information in one sitting on a few occasions but I'll be damned if any of it stuck.  If they are classes your never going to use again no biggie... if they are important prerequisites you are probably going to have to re-learn the stuff.

If you have been going to class,  you probably already know more than you think you do.  Set yourself a rigid schedule for studying, and give yourself a cutoff time to stop and rest.  Seriously, do something fun to destress for a few minutes then go to bed thinking about Bora Bora or something.

Of course if you've been BLOWING OFF CLASS for a semester.. well... it's gonna be ugly no matter how you slice it lol.  Get what rest you can, cram all you can, and before you sleep and before you take the exam.. remember the exam JUST DOESN'T MATTER.  Because it doesn't, really.  Not in the big picture ; )

    Good luck!

I will be free to dispense more bad advice later today : )

I don't have classes and kinda learened most of it myself, I don't have semesters for this exam, I tried an ordered schedule but it never works for me, cramming last minute is better.

I guess I had a little advantage.  I was working in construction and learning it at the same time.  So I could visualize everything I was being taught in college.  I just needed to learn the technical terms of everything I was doing.

Yes that is a great advantage, actually using what you are learning in practical application.  Sadly I fear the vast majority of higher education involves choking down trivia and minutiae that have NOTHING to do with reality ; )

    but

I did have to take classes like College Algebra, College Trig and Statics.  Then I took some other classes like Biology, American History and Marriage and Family (I took this one because of all the women in it, made out like a bandit)

One class I took that I dropped was Psychology.  I couldn't stay awake, God that was a boring class.

No, Modern HIstory (European side), basically Bismarck era uptil 1914, German domestic and foreign policy and Russia from Alex II to the second revolution. And it's not a uni exam or a high school one (just checked your age). You doing GCSEs?

This is a great way to handle test anxiety if you have a trust fund or want to work in a burger king (or some other equally intellectually taxing job) for the rest of your life.

Heh, yeah but it's so easy to bullsh-t your way through psychology.  I once wrote a completely fictitious paper for a psychology class and got a "B" on it.  It was fictitious because I didn't do any research for it, I just spewed a bunch of crap off the top of my head.  And all of my reference material and quotes were made up.  Heh, I referenenced books and people and studies which were purely fabrications of my own imagination and I did it for the simple reason that I was feeling lazy and didn't want to put any work into it.  And I got a "B" on the paper.

Oh, ok, here's my advice:  If you're done studying work yourself to physical exhaustion.  Then you'll be too tired to worry about anything and you'll fall into bed and be asleep before you know it.  And I don't mean just a little exercise work out I mean bust your arse with hard physical labor for hours.  I don't expect you to take this advice but you might be suprised how being worn out and tired to the bone can tend to make worrying seem like it's not worth the effort.

Here's the last technique I'll recommend (for emergency use only).

If you have to study for your next exam but you are too tired now, set three alarms for 5 hours from now (redundancy), hang a blanket over your window, and go to sleep.  Then get up and study.

I used this technique with some success on several occasions.  It is sub-optimal because there is evidence that significant "consolidation" of information occurs while you sleep.

What you get from "flipping" your schedule like this is cramming in its purest form.

Good luck, and go easy on the phamaceutical caffeine : )
