I played VG at beta when it was horrible and unplayable mainly due to performance, played it about a year or so ago when it sort of recovered awesome gfx, still a bit jittery but it was very playable, the main issue was really going into a city for 3 or 4 days only to never find anyone, just the NPCs standing in the same place, that made me not buy VG, I am currently playing EVE online which i like very much, but being a big fan of fantasy based MMO's I need my Fantasy fix as well (a fantasy mmo on the side).
I didnt really get far when i tried VG for real, but what might interest me alot is the sandbox side of VG (house/boat building) exploring etc... and I was wondering if one of you VGs vets that did experience this side (if it exists!) in VG could give me some pointers as to what can be done besides the obvious PVE running quests ...
Last but not least, population, since im based in EU I would ofc be interested in a EU server, how are the population levels? are there alot of new ppl coming back to the game (since I have seen the ratings of VG go up quite alot these last months i assume there must be some kind of new player influx)? Is there any server that is particularly active guild wise?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

You have nothing to lose right now. Its free for the next month if you are a returning member.
I actualy have enjoyed it the laast couple of days. The starter city is filled and fun.
I can go into great depths about what I think about it, but people's opinions, especially on this site are so diverse that I shall refrain.
I don't think you'd be wasting your time to have another look for yourself though, I for one would be interested to hear about how you find it now.
*edit* Actually, screw that... You're looking for some info and I already wrote this not that long ago. I still stand by it www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/237675/Its-one-month-since-I-returned-and-my-sub-is-due-in-two-days.html
Damn good game now....and its stable.
the game is now ready for release.
The dev team is still too small.
Population is small ... though with a surprising amount of lowlevel characters.
New areas are too grindy. See dev team size for the reason.
Otherwise its a fine game now, great classes, great class balance, great world size, great quests (even some of the highlevel ones, I like raiding in APW), great viewsize, and only laggy in some towns (most noticeably New Targonor) and in some raid areas (if you have 18 or worse 24 people with you).
All in all its the most gorgeous PvE classic fantasy MMO I know of, and definitely fun to play.
Just a comment regarding the cities in Vanguard. I see a lot of people comment on the low population in the cities, and assume that this is becuase there is a low population in the game. This is not WoW. There are major cities like Stormwind, but there is not as much reason to go to a major city. There are some speicialized vendors in the major cities, and to graduate to the next level of crafting, you often need to vistit a large city. There are some adventuring quests but not that many.
If you want to see people you go where the action is. For adventuring you usually go to adventuring hubs, which can be found on the riftway system. Most of the major quest lines are given out here. For crafting you go to the outposts which give out more faction points for doing work orders. The exception is diplomacy which does involve visiting the cities, but this is a solo game anyway. The auction houses and banks are scattered all over Telon at the outposts not just in the cities, so again its not like you have to visit Ironforge to buy something of the auction house or get something out of the bank.
Yes the game has non-instanced housing (3 levels) which you build yourself and the there are 3 levels of ships that you can build and sail on the rivers and oceans.
there is still a lot of lag around the cities no matter what computer you have, but the performance is better then it was. Fun is in the eeye of the beholder so you have to play it yourself, i like the diplomacy but others hate it, the new isle is fun
If you played before in Beta for at least a month or three, I don't think you are going to find anything so different that is going to blow your mind. The game is essentially the same. Yes they have improved some things, yes they have added new areas. But there are still bugs...The best part of this game is, and always will be, deep character progression and spheres. Although I will say I wish I could rip crafting out of this game and put it in a game I actually wanted to play long term.
I am a returning player going back to check it out with the free month SOE is handing out to vets. I've only been around a few days now, but this game just makes me want to play a better game. The same effect it had on me before.
I played at beta and stayed till level 67.
I have recently been playing Darkfall but did try the trial isle out again to see how VG had improved. Have to admit i was suprissed at how much better it ran and so subbed. Outside was not as polished as the isle, which was obvious, but there was marked improvment. i only stopped playing to concentrate on DF. VG is still there though and i will be returning at some time!
Id say give it another go if you liked the idea of VG a the start.
i just caught this, thanx lol. gonna give it a go. i always loved the vsoh to some degree, but the lack of community and performance sucked which was a real turn off. im bored to death of wow so i too am looking for alternatives to my "mmo fix" :P

Typo? There are only 55 levels.
I play it from time to time (have station account) and it have a few really good things.
If SOE/Sigil had released it in this shape it would have been really big and hurt games like EQ2 and LOTRO but now it got a bad name so the players are generally few.
I am european myself but play on a US server, habit since EQ2 because the EU servers there are in bad shape, old EQ servers that makes me lagg a lot. Dunno about Vanguard however but it works fine to play on a US server, have good ping.
VG is really in a good state now but with it's bad history it is hard to get people excited and get the numbers up....
If soe were smart they would revamp the entire game. Spiff up the animations, add some more polish, maybe a new area or finish some of the areas that are in the game and not live. Basically put together a relaunch team and put 6-12 months into really polishing and adding some good content. Then launch the game with a new name or maybe as vanguard but with a new box and a new launch and new servers. Really make it into a new game.
This would likely be quite successful. Or if they don't want to do that sell the game to another company that would relaunch it and give it the love it needs.
If VG was in the current state at launch it WOULD be one of the top games today.

Oops yes it was 47...sorry. played that many mmos the last few years i forget what level cap is what game..with VG i just remember being 3 levels from max and i had never grouped, which is one reason i left.
Is VG worth returning to?
Simply put, yes.
If you dont want to group, then Vanguard is indeed a poor choice. All the best content will not be available to you.
OTOH if you dont group, why play a MMO at all ?
I soled all the way to 47 and maybe did miss content but it didnt spoil my enjoyment of the game untill the end..then i just got lonely.
Do a search mate on why solo players play MMO's! you will see what MMO means...it's nothing to do with grouping, it's about being in a multiplayer enviroment, socialising and competing. grouping is a small part of MMO's. No need to discuss it with me though, this ones been done a million times....seems solo players understand soloing and grouping! whereas group players are usually a little short sighted and dont see the other side!
VG is definitely worth giving it a try, if only for the sheer size of the world.

Well, but nothing you said changes the fact that Vanguard IS in fact by design meant for PvE grouping. Yes you can solo today well at all levels, but the real good content with the best gear rewards is available almost always through grouping, and raiding.
Not a returning player but a new one, just downloading it and give it a go, tought it could hold me couple of weeks or months before something more intresting comes up.
^_____^
i know simple answer your question, world is alive instead of Npcs only there is real people " in pixelated form " running around and it makes the gaming more intresting. its not anymore like mmo is only for those who want group and raid.
The answer to this question is really very simple. VG is worth downloading the trial and testing it out.
Will you like it? Only you can answer that question.

It was designed for both friend. otherwise why would there be solo content in there? yes you can get better gear if you group, but you can also get to end game by soloing. meaning you can choose to do either. As a solo player i can choose to group if i feel like it, or as a group player i can choose to solo if i choose. And as for raiding....it's a new thing to VG raiding was never a big part of VG untill recently.
Oh by the way i started my character in beta and rerolled him at launch. So it's been a mix of soloable/group game from the start. but just for the record...are there any out there that think it's a struggle in VG to solo? in my mind it's one of the easiest games out there to level in, and that's it's biggest downfall for me. the rest of the game is great. If only it was more of a challenge it could have been a great game!
This game has improved more than any other and it's worth paying $17.99 just for one month to give it a try. We have just received a free expansion pack which takes the levels from 50 to 55 and the new content is pretty impressive!
200 new quests and over 1000 new items and we didn't have to pay for them. I hope they bring out a retail expansion as it might help with the population. That is another thing, the population on all servers has increased impressively and I'm not just a fanboi posting here. I have been playing it since release and I still love it more than any other game.
I have played WoW, LOTRO, Warhammer and Conan since this game was released but I keep returning to it. The reason is the depth of gameplay, the atmosphere and the sheer beauty of the environment. It's a great game and more people should come back and play it.

You think it's easier to play than WoW, LOTRO and COnan? Really? You should play some more, I completely disagree.

I said one of them friend...all of those games you mentioned i have also played and left due to being too easy too....well i stayed with lotro for a little longer and ...yes i would say i found VG easier do you really think if i played VG longer i would find it harder?
