I want to know what you would consider to be the best music in an mmorpg. I dont mean the entire soundtrack to the whole game just a theme or music to go with a particular area in the game, and give me your reasons!
For me after all these years (and the reason for this topic) it still as to be the main Everquest theme. To this day it is still among the best in my opinion, both the MIDI version and the score with the full orchestra. For me it still feels truly epic as if you really are adventuring into a whole new world. I still remember booting up everquest for the first time and hearing it, I was awestruck and it added to the feel of what was to come in game.

I know Final Fantasy XI had some really good music too.... but anyway.

Best single track would probably go to the EQ2 symphonic version of that song. Best overall music would go to WOW, as they have less throw-away ambient tracks than most MMOs I've played.

Music is subjective
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Edot: Yea Ronfaure is a nice calming melody, I leveled fising on both my mains so it's pretty familiar. all the music in FFXI was good.
I'm not sure if it's the "best"... but, surely one of my favorite tracks (I used to sit by a waterfall in Ronfaure, or fish, just to listen to the music... in fact, one of my favorite parts of leveling fishing was catching trout/salmon in the river because this was my soundtrack):

There are other, better tracks in the game... but Ronfaure is my favorite by far. It just really fit the setting and feel of the place I guess. ;^_^
oh, and a thread like this *must* have a UO song included with the rest. Really great music in that little game there...

Almost any of the early Everquest midi music before they jazzed it up.
I'd have to say Anarchy Online has best ingame music etc. I think they even got rewards for it.
Here is the battle music:
"Love feels no burden, thinks nothing of its trouble, attempts what is above its strength, pleads no excuse for impossibility, for it thinks all things are lawful for itself and all things are possible."
Maybe it's nostalgia, but they really put some effort into that EQ2 theme song. I remember seeing the videos of the orchestra playing it before the game came out and was like...wow
As much as I dislike the game its self, I have to say WoW.
The theme always fitted the area perfectly, and it wasn't a big "in your face" soundtrack that played on repeat. You'd enter an area, and the music would fade in, and play all through in the background. When it's finished, it'd fade back out and leave you with no music for about 10 mins. Then every now and then, it'd fade back in and play a certain peice from the theme of the zone, just for atmosphere.
Sometimes, I didn't even notice this...
But I loved the area music in WoW, oh man. It was so atmospheric, really did give you a feel for the area you were in.

Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
I love alot of tracks from EVE, WoW, Vanguard and Lineage 2.
Love the music in Atlantica.
If there was one damn awesome thing about AOC it was the music. Regardless of what I think about the game itself, music is just plain awesome.
I also like EVEs music, which maybe might not stand as a thing on it's own, but it complements eve awesomely and sets the right mood.
For me I'd have to say the music on Lok in SWG is really great, although I always found it a little overly dramatic.
This is 1 thing that Funcom got right even at release, sometime's it is simply stunning.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

The music in WoW was excellent and very diverse, but the best overall game score for me was anarchy online. The music in AO complemented the game perfectly, with a haunting, alien quality. I remember when the login music began to fade in it was really like entering another world.
LotRO also has great music. Incidently, if anyone has played both AO and LotRO, do you notice a similarity between the music in Ergeion and the Redeemed Gardens in SL? It could be just me.
AoC, I love the Tortage music )
I'd have to say Aion hits the mark for me, got my hands on the OST and also played in the chinese beta. Both the music and sorroundings blend in so well...
If I had to choose my favorite OST of all time for an MMO then Lineage 2 wins hands down, the music provides so much immersion that alone keeps me entretained at times, and everytime I hear them I wanna play the game.
You can hear some of the tracks here www.lineage2.com/pds/pds_music.html
UO's music.
Guild Wars, the music in that is amazing.
While Ryzom doesn't have music they have very stunning enviromental sounds. I'd say it wins hands down in that effect.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
EQ 1: Kelethin city music in midi form.

That song would get stuck in my head all the time.

The Chronicles of Spellborn by a fairly wide margin.
Ultima Online is about the only music that really has stuck in my head after all these years...so my vote would be with UO.
For all its faults, the music in AOC wasn't one of them. There were lots of really nice themes. LotRO also has lots of great music. The first piece to really make an impression on me was the theme music as I crossed the Brandywine bridge from the Shire to Buckland for the first time. It's a Gaellic type piece of music with pipes. So atmospheric I had to stop still in the middle of the bridge and listen to it.
Of course, LotRO also has the bonus of player made music like this:

LoTRO was the only occasion I actually stopped and paid attention to the music. And I've played WoW, AoC, and many, many other MMO's, and never even noticed the music. But in Evendim, there was a haunting female voice, siren-like, that made me stop and turn up the volume. So that is is for me.
This is 1 thing that Funcom got right even at release, sometime's it is simply stunning.
QFT! The music in AoC is simply incredible. LOL, I got ahold of the collector's edition music CD because I enjoyed it so much.
