At one point the Sith force-choked the Jedi Knight, with the Bounty Hunter stepping up to use his flamethrower on the hovering victim. At the end, the Knight killed, the Sith looted him, took his lightsaber, and equipped it for a dual-saber build. Awesome Duel wielding light sabers woot.
Yeah, you left out one thing. Go read the review that snippet came from again. You'll realize the reason there is only a Sith and a bounty hunter teamed is because only TWO people can be teamed at a time.
So at least you don't have to worry about reading 4 other players responses to the quests.
Yeah, a real MMO this game is.
I read the article and didn't see where they said groups could only be 2 people. Considering they said there was raids in the game I don't see your logic on this at all.
"Even more impressive was the addition of a second party member. When talking to NPCs in The Old Republic, the other players in your party will also be participating in the conversation with their own options. So while you might choose one response, the other player will be picking another, and you'll see your guild-mate interact in the dialogue scene based on his response."
I misread it the first time. I read the parts in yellow, but missed the "s" in "players" in the line in between, so I had the impression it was limited to two players. My fault. - 1 reading comprehension on my part.
ahhhhhhhhh okay thought maybe you were confusing with how many nps char you can have with you at a time i know that is only 1 so that would make 2 in the party.
I play single-player RPG's for my taste of immersion.
You'll feel right at home in this game, then.
I'm hoping thats not the case but we won't know for sure until beta and launch. So far the game sounds like a solid single-player game but thats not at all what I am looking for. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 were both great games...for about 2 weeks each. I want something to keep me entertained for 2 years.
To me it sounds like some of the quest areas are instanced (like they should be). No more trying to send tells to the AFK asshole camping the boss to ask him if you can kill say Lord Nyax for your quest like in SWG.
Their are plenty of public areas judging from the SS, there was even a shot where the camera pans into one of the public dungeon areas in the game from outside. In one of the demo articles a reviewer mentions outrageous draw distances in the game. One thing to keep in mind is that the game will make use of fazing, as well as streamed instances. You might not know you entered one until you notice the guy behind you not a part of your group is gone. Fazing is a process where 2 players will be in the same room, but may not see the same thing due to where in their story arc they are at. To me it takes the MMO from a mindless daily humdrum grind fest of static objects that never move or change, and gives it life, and real perspective. Players can change the world around them without effecting one another.
TBH if anyone paid attention to how the other single player "old republic" titles worked not much of this would have been a surprise at all. Both used a similar skill type system where, yes, you chose a 'class' to start and you did 'level' up but you had to pick what skills you would learn (from a WIDE variety available) thus forcing you to somewhat specialize within your chosen profession. Hell even though you were a jedi you could easily choose to specialize in firearms, diplomacy, etc. This is just taking it one step further and allowing you to be things other than a Jedi as well.
As to the PVP... they've been stating that there will be PVP in this for a while. Why anyone is surprised by it is beyond me.
I do like what I'm hearing about quest/adventure mechanics so far as well. One of the things that was severely lacking in SWG when it came out (and even to this day really) were solid *adventures* that you could go on rather than just 'missions'. Sounds like BioWare has been doing their homework on this one and the game is going to have a lot to offer both the storyline and the sandbox crowds. Including crafting
Remember: Even SW:KOTOR and KOTOR2 had limited but meaningful crafting in them.

That's one of the things I dislike about the new MMO's. I probably sound like a broken record but I don't consider a game Massive or Multi-player if all you are doing is single-player instances and sharing a city to bank, craft and trade items with other players. Guess that is the new fad though.

As far as I know they haven't shared any details about the PvP though. Death penalties, player looting, open world vs arenas that type stuff is what I am interested in hearing. When the OP mentioned looting someones light saber I was surprised but hopeful that they do add some sort of penalty for dying so the PvP doesn't end up playing like some FPS and players actually have a reason not to do stupid things and die.
Maybe EA did learn from WARs mistakes so they won't make a bunch of promises to break at launch.

Not all content will be instanced, but some will to keep the story within TOR flowing without worrying about the afk loot whore camper camping the critter you need to kill to finish your portion of a quest.

I'm opposed to open looting absolute ffa pvp. not because I don't mind the concept, but it tends to attract the absolute worst kind of gamer around.
I do hope there is some penalty for pvp of course, but the current round of experiences in POTBS (where cross-teaming is now officially blessed) and darkfall (need I say more?) demonstrates that while the concepts are nice, they attract the worst kind of players.
At the Demo I saw, there was NO mention of PC Looting, and as stated above, the saber was looted off an NPC (actually, he called it a "mini-boss"...It took 2 players, 1 jedi, one not, to kill him...The Jedi used a force choke when the mini-boss got low on health, and then I think he impaled him with his saber.)
He did say ALL of the traditional MMO elements will be available, in addition to the story driven content. He specifically mentioned Raids, Guilds, Crafting and a few others...

I'm not sure how player looting attracts "the worst kind of players". I mean look at EVE as an example. Yes the game has tons of bots and macroers but the community that actually plays the game is awesome.
"The Old Republic is being made with all the trimmings of an MMO. Full PvP, groups, raids, guilds, auctions, and crafting will play major parts in the game design and have players building up their resources to battle it out across the galaxy" I wonder, is it all the trimmings of a MMO since WOW or before. Because before we had A LOT more depth and ability. If you look the the MMO since WOW, they are linear, shallow, and fun for about a week.
All Star Was is implementing is story....otherwise, it is still same old stuff.
At the end, the Knight killed, the Sith looted him, took his lightsaber, and equipped it for a dual-saber build. Awesome Duel wielding light sabers woot
Fully implemented voice overs? Who F'n cares? 4th pillar story arcs? Who F'n cares?
PvP & player looting? This just made me much more interested in this game.

I F'n care.
Are you freaking kidding? Finally an mmo that goes beyond just the stereotypical "kill 10 boars, kill 10 pigs, kill 10 imps, loot 273 bear kidneys".
I mean seriously, what they're offering is the possibility to remove that empty, hollow feeling that most mmos (WoW is the perfect example) have and why they're so cotton-picking boring.
They're attempting to make the "rpg" part of it valid, and it'll give you something to be interested in, give you a reason to do the grinding and whatnot.
Instead of your only goal being "get to the next level" you run into Darth Malak and *SPOILER* find out you're Darth Revan! *END SPOILER*.
Not only will they make your RPG experience simply orgasmic, they will make your MMORPG experience beautiful.
In theory, anyway.
But seeing as how I've absolutely loved every game Bioware has made, I've got every bit of faith in them.

Originally posted by jposavatz I suspect you were being rhetorical, but in case you weren't - actually I F'n care... I think these are pretty interesting, and especially in the case of voice overs, unique additions to a mostly cookie-cutter MMO genre. Bioware takes pride, above all else, in story-telling and immersion (see KotOR and Mass Effect...). The fact that EVERY line of dialogue throughout the entire game will have voice-over is pretty immersive.
I prefer my MMO's to be immersive rather than necessarily have hard-core (player looting) PvP. I play FPS's for my taste of PvP.
I know some people care but most MMOers admit to skipping thru quest dialogue and only read what the objectives are. I see nothing immersive about a game that has thousands of people completing the same quest for the same guy, killing the same bad guy in the same place in the same manner, day after day after day.
I play single-player RPG's for my taste of immersion.
Who care about being immersive? This sounds like a fun game. Light sabre battles, cover combat, interesting stories ....
I have to admit that some of the things being release are looking pretty cool and I'd like to have a chance to beta the game to get a real sense of what to expect. I don't fully understand the part you mentioned about crafting though. I remember early on hearing/reading something about crafting being a secondary portion of the game. If I had to wager money I imagine that crafting in TOR will be similar to WoW and that type of crafting. I really hated that system of NPC looting for resources but it is what it is I suppose. If they can somehow strike a balance between world drop item quality and crafted item quality I'd be happy even if I don't really like the system.

You know, there were games before WOW, that didn't have the "kill x, collect y" type of quests. Those are the type of games we do want back, but not in a single player type experience.

How come so many people grip about kill x mobs or collect y items quests?!? I mean come on it is getting old, I can't think of one game I have played that had one of those quests that didn't have a story or reason attached to it, do you guys read the quest diologue?
