Sure a mature guild helps, sure ignore helps, all these are great features that developers make sure to include. But forget the /ignore command for every single asshat, becuase your ignore list would fill up rather quickly, so this is not a feasible option. So then you start to get spam and see all kinds of stupid comments, which like it or not, will take away from your enjoyment of the game. Like previous posters have already said, if leet immature players become over 50% of the server, whats the incentive to stay? This is all speculation of course, maybe there wont be a mass defection from WOW, but if there is then like other posters above have said, they will overwhelm any positive aspect any mature guild can have. A good analogy would be going to some public venue with a group of 10 friends. This public venue has 100 people, of which over 50 are asshats.....hmmm...are you and your friends going to stay and hang out?

Why should we tolerate the way WoW players often behave? Or for that matter, the way the FFA'rs behave? I'm sorry, but thats called 'bad behavior'. I won't be "tolerating it" any more than I should "tolerate a jerk" in real life. I have never had someone stalk me in EQ2. I've never had someone harass me in EQ2. I've never had someone have their friends do either of those things in EQ2. But I sure had it in WoW. I played WoW for three weeks, and had that happen at least once a week by different people and I was playing a different character each time. I will never play the game again.

And I won't "tolerate" that behavior from anyone else.

I recently started playing Eve Online, and I thought "well, this game is pretty complex and targeted at older players, I'm sure there are very few immature players here," but almost every day someone is spamming the chat channels with gibberish or potty humor.  If they released a game that had an enforced age limit of 60 years old, some old fart would be in the chat channels spamming gay sex jokes in all caps.  It's unavoidable.

It doesn't matter what the game is, there will be immaturity, especially when a game is popular. It is inevitable that there will be many immature players in SWTOR, but there will also be a lot of mature players, so it's up to us to seek them out and put the others on our ignore lists.

No, I don't think this story-focused game will appeal to the immature. They don't have the attention span for it.

the only reason WoW has the rep of the immature player base is because we have so many more players that are immature due to the huge population the ratio between mature and immature isn't anydifferent from any other mmo. THere are dicks in every game

Every MMO that has a semi decent chance of being decent always has a ton of idiots that scream "_______ the new WoW killer."

Before it was WAR, before that it was AOC for a short while, too many games have tried to take WoW head on and lost. WAR managed to keep a decent sized player basis from WoW (mostly the pvp players.)

Any game that does well will have a good majority of its game filled with Asses, this is because the world is filled with asses. When you take those asses and give them annonmis profiles with little reprocutions for being this way you create jerks that feel no remorse for their actions, This isnt just MMOs this is the entire internet.

Gladly they made the invention in MMOs of the ignore option and the ability to leave chat alltogether.

Then you ask "well how am I supposed to join a guild or meet people if I have them all turned off?" or "how do I join a group of non jerks?" both are easy enough, Guilds generally you will gravitate toward other players from grouping up and doing quests, random spam chat doesn't do this. If your into a certain type of content (aka endgame, RPing, PvP.) most serious guilds have websites that you can look up that will allow you to talk to them in a clear polite manner.

A good example is my current guild, we play on probably one of the most fail servers possible, yet we strive to clear content in professional manner. While it does mean recruiting is a pain, that is the onyl problem we have with the server.

immature players have been around since the dawn of games. However in a MMO one thing i have come to understand is the power of  /ingore "name" plus the people you choose to interact with is your own doing.

I'm actually hoping that SWTOR has some immature players... What fun is a game if everyone role-plays and acts completely formal?

  • Seven77Seven77 Member Posts: 38

If you think its a kid pissen you off just /tell them go back to your moma then put them on your ignore. When they try to talk back they get a nice this player has ignored you and they will go into a hissy fit lol.

There's a lot of RPers and they tend to have a more mature community. For Star Wars: The Old Republic, yeah, there are going to be a lot of immature people playing, but  quite frankly,

I believe it is going to be split into two communities, the mature and the immature.

I will point out for the record that I am in my 50's Wtith that said, age has nothing to do with maturity or lack there of in an MMO. I have seen people older than I act very immature while I have seen those as young as 6 or 7 act far beyond their years. Maturity is a matter of self control....something that many people just do not have a good grasp on how to handle. Every MMO I have ever played has a certain percentage that just can't seem to control themselves in a social enviroment of an MMO. So, regardless of what MMO you name, it will have a certain level of immaturity.

Let's party like it is 1863!

It is true, I'm young and I'm a bit immature.

Now being mature all the time is no fun at all and i hate hardcore gamers i am a laid back casual guy i can putup with plenty of asshats there are verying levels of maturity and i like people who are random and goof of but damn it can play their class and have fun hence is why i love my current lotro kin most members are over 20 i am the youngest in my kin but we have more fun doing our own thing than we would any thinmg else .

There is going to be more kids playing this then there were for star wars galaxies.  First, the mmo genre has expanded considerably since 2003-2004.  Second, just like world of warcraft brought in a lot of fans of the warcraft 1-3 games, so will sw:tor bring in a lot of fans of the knights of the old republic 1-2 games.

Now, I think the more players for a game the better.  Sure that means there are going to be more assholes and immature pricks along with elitist jerks whos' lives revolve around gaming but there are also going to be more casual/fun players aswell.

Besides, I'd rather have a game with a population like WoW's where people are very active on the forums and fansites-constantly posting vids and what not as opposed to warhammer's where people are very quiet and just go about their business of leveling.

You can bring some friends and enter an instance, that way all the unwelcome members of the community are gone, from your world.
Even if you are alone, you can quest, craft, harvest (you might run into them competing for nodes), fish ...  There are so much to do I wonder why I would worry about these people I do not want.
For some games, the freedom is less.  In PVP games or zones, they can attack you, in ffapvp games they can grief you.  In games with no content except ffa pvp (like DF) you have to live with them or unsub.  Now quality of game community matters, that is why I will not play DF, not for my life.  I despise the community of that game.
Until SW:ToR is launched, I will reserve my judgment.  Till then.
For the sake of clarification, I love SWG Pre-CU, the best game for me easily, apart from DAoC, my most adored.

The moment I have to dissable all chats and hide with a handful of friends inside a private instance... will be the day I stop playing MMO's.

The reason I play MMO's is to meet new people, join in into discussions in chats, have fun chatting away... join PuG's now and then.

That's the whole point of playing an MMO. Meeting people from all over the world.

If I want to isolate myself to just a handful friends around me... I can just go back to one of my old clans, fire up an FPS game with RPG mod and play with them on a private server.

    Cheers

And for wanting this goal, you have to accept that not everyone you meet is mature.  In real life not everyone is mature, are you just going to stop going outside?  There are mature people out there.  I want to make a different point while I'm talking...

What exactly does immature mean? If it means "young," then yes you will have some immature players. If it means disruptive and rude, then yes, you will have those too. The two groups don't have to relate. Every gaming community / website has this dogmatic misconception that age directly relates to maturity. I used to play WoW when I was younger, and I was accepted into guilds that were more "mature" by your standards.

It really has everything to do with who you talk to and group up with. If your guild is filled with immature people, then fine, you will think the community is bad. If your guild has mature people, then you won't feel that way. I have to be honest when I say that my guilds in WoW were filled with people who were old enough to be fathers and still had immaturity from them, and I also had some people in my guild who were fifteen and they seemd bright and level-headed. Immaturity is present because the number of people is large, but just find some people you like.

I've played a bunch of games, and regardless, most had immature players. Even AoC, the supposed "mature" game, people spam global and do fart emotes. You have it on Xbox live as well. Steam too.

There's no game free of people acting like idiot children, so thinking this one will be different is naive

So whats everyone thoughts on what the TOR community will be like?

Welcome to the new world of mmorpgs.  "Maturity" is subjective, especially when you consider that you are discussing behavior in a virtual world.  The only way to eliminate "asshats" is to play in a niche game or to just not dabble in virtual worlds, and even niche games are subject to idiocy from time to time as drama arises.

To your question:  TOR will be full of "asshats."  It's as simple as the environment Bioware has promoted.  I'd like to say there is a formula, but basically my opinion is that idiocy lies in both ends of the spectrum in regards to game complexity:  the simpler the game, the more idiots you have playing, the more complex the game, the more elitist a-holes you have playing.  Both result in the same perception by outsiders:  games full of asshats.  Having pvp also increases the idiot quotient due to the "e-peen factor."  In the end, it's middle of the road mmo's like LOTRO, EQ, DDO, Ryzom, etc that up with the most "mature" perceived communities.

Poor or stupid players run the risk of killing the game as with any other game.   They can make the game tedious and dull.

I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

    Played or Beta'd: UO / DAOC / Horizons / EQ2 / DDO / EVE / Archlord / PirateKingsOnline / Tabula Rasa / LOTRO / AOC / Champions / Darkfall / Mortal Online / DCUO / Rift / STO / SWTOR / TSW

  • segynsegyn Member Posts: 234

nope not at all. From the point of half the people on these forums it is going to be just a single player game so you wont see anybody any way.

    /rant off.

sorry just getting sick of the people saying it is only going to be a singleplayer game with a chat room.

Any game with a large following is going to have it's fair share of fools. Hell even indy games have theirs.

Seeing as it is Star Wars (huge liscense) and made by Bioware (famed RPG creators) it will surely have a big following.

What I'm saying is expect fools, regardless of what game the come from. I'm sure there will be plenty of idiots who try this game who didnt come from WoW.

  • vrembrantvvrembrantv Member UncommonPosts: 20

Idiots are everywhere, however, the one advantage an MMO has is an "Ignore Feature". Unfortunately, the "Ignore Feature" in real life is still patent-pending and won't be released until 2110.

I've never been bothered by the community in any MMO I've played.  Not enough to make a difference one way or the other.  That includes WoW.

Part of being a 'mature' player is being able to deal with / avoid the 'immature' ones.
