Is humanity counted as 1 race, or are there black (africans), whites, yellow (chineese) etc. Don't want to sound racist. Just to mention.
OP shouldn't count human type of races, but read basic info about MO, instead of jumping into certain aspects without getting info about core basics.

MO divides humans into different groups. Instead of calling them a different " tribe " they are considered a race. Probably a problem with the english translation.

I highly doubt that. It's a swedish company, they don't make these kind of errors.
This is how it sound like. If you want to be white, you take that race. If you want to be black, you take that race. If you want to be yellow, you take that, want to be red, you take that, want to be a race that is adapted in night, you take that, you want to take a race that i live in forest, you take this one.
What i mean is that instead of custumizing your character in this colour, add him large hair, and others, you take a race that have it all. You can even chose a mix i heard. They are all human race.

Hey I like meatballs too.
If the terminology is right then its just a difference in cultures probably. The western hemisphere doesn't use the term race to describe a difference in cultures. Well we did but that was before the 60s.
The more interesting part of all this is that race, size and age will influence stats. From the MO site:
Before this, testers will also go through some of the stages in the character creation process. (..) Cosmetics aside, the important part of this, stat-wise, will be to choose race, age, size and attributes – and those are all interconnected, i.e. both race, age and size will have an impact on the attributes.

Or you use sliders to change skin tone, size, eye shape, or whatever to suit, and be honest and have just 1 race of humans?
I guess it looks better and more feature full bulked out the way they did it though.
I could be worng (that actually happened once, and it was horrible!) but in the power point presentation on this game, didn't it say that you actually select your parents race, and their parents race, in order to come up with some kind of mongrel for yourself?

I'm guessing that this is just a lower fantasy than you've played or read in the past. MO's fantasy is somewhere between Age of Conan and Warhammer/Warcarft. While most of the races are human like in appearance that doesn't mean their attributes are the same. You should give the powerpoint presentation a look.

People seriously need to stop bitchin' about meaningless stuff like this. Does it really matter if they call it races/cultures/ethnicities etc? How much does it matter in other games anyway? A different skin and a bit different starting stats? Here you can actually mix "races" and they actually have different socities, compared to the typical high fantasy human, elven and orc stereotypes.
I think some of you are confusing "Race" with "Species".
Are you saying that the correct phrasing for MO should be '6 player races of human and 3 player species avialable to play!!' or whatever?
Something like that yes. The developers said that there are about 6 sub-species of human and like 3 sub species of elf. So you get 6 human races and 3 elves.
The devs wrote a very detailed message about it in the forum

hehe but your happy playing orcs and elves?
I don't play an elf or an orc in LotRO or VG. In LotRO I have a dwarf and a human. In VG, a lesser giant. Exotic races/species have their place in fantasy MMOs and I don't mind playing them if they look good, but one of the reasons I'm looking forward to MO is because it doesn't have the typical fantasy races. I'm kind of played out on the fantasy MMO altogether, but there's not too many other options atm.

well, yes... like I said...
Are there no races among humans? Human races don't count?

There are 9 low-fantasy races to play as
but I guess unless they look like aliens to eachother they can't be another race?
Yes, we won't be able to play cat people, werewolves or lizardmen... lol

Even here in our world we have multiple types of races
You'd be suprised at the 'official' definitions of race you can find today.
But in general, and in simple generalized terms we have; whites, blacks, asians, hispanic, indian etc. These are races.
I think some of you are confusing "Race" with "Species".
Some of the races in MO are sub-species of the same species, aka different races.
I guess. I'm not a genus researcher, but I hope I got the point across
Interestingly, here the list detailing the 5 current general racial definitions in our world
Caucasoid race
Negroid race
Capoid race
Mongoloid race
Australoid race
Races, cultures, whatever. I'm glad we're not going to be playing man-lizzards and minotaurs in this one.
