I just had a Thought....Call of Cthulhu would make an excellent MMORPG universe.....
There are times when one must ask themselves is it my passion that truly frightens you? Or your own?

Because no one has the skill to make the world feel like H.P. Lovecraft stories.
correct me if i am wrong but isn't the whole point of Cthulhu games to not go insane and die first? Also i am pretty sure the lore is basically end of the world stuff.
The setting does not lend itself to MMO's at all. If someone was to turn it into an MMO i am sure they would be butchering the lore and somehow turn it into a demon killing fest (not very Cthulhu like at all....)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Actually you could translate the game bit differently because it's about expanding the view of the world - is the world mad or are you?
Dreamworld is one very interesting aspect of Lovecraft mythos, if you are interested in how the game could play I would suggest to pick up the pen and paper version of the game with Dreamworld campaign and there is other excellent big campaigns available as well.
The game would need to be quite complex with some asylums and involve instanity and very complex character evolution - definitely would need to be sandbox and ffa pvp with proper real world laws and everything including taxes - as close to real world as possible, thus murder someone and get jailed and so forth

mmo by funcom,based on lovecraft
name:The Secret World
its very secretive ><
Because of the way the game would have to work to be true to the Lovecraftian feel, it would be a niche MMOG at best, and noone's going to take a chance on a game like that becuase everyone wants to reach the success of WoW... even though it's a pipe-dream. However, I agree that it would be an awesome MMOG, and yes, The Secret World is about as close as we're likely to get to it...

I thik it would bring an interesting aspect to an MMORPG....but yeah the mechanics of the game would be very complex and different from any other game....and in the Cthulhu universe sometime the Fear/insanity dmg wouldn't always kill you it would sometime mutate you or give you psychosis

to be honest if it was anything like that 2003 (or was it 2004...) game with those fish people then i doubt it would get past the first few levels before freaking out and logging onto Hello Kitty online in a vain attempt to get back my sanity.
still...that game was pretty kick ass

It has potential but you'd have to take out some of the better mechanics like ALWAYS going insane, turning into something else then going insane, killing yourself, having to choose the "best" way to die, or whatever else. You have to choose between Lovecraftian or MMOer granted it's also a little shallow to say you have to choose between the two but devs/their controllers will say they have to.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Not strictly a Call of Cthulhu game, but WoW's Yogg-Saron encounter in their latest raid (Ulduar) is very heavily influenced by the mythos.
Tentacles all over the place. Strange mists. Each player has their own sanity level, which can drop rapidly if they make mistakes.
It's a great encounter. And quite hard . Pity most players will never get to see it.

Hellboy has that feel to it as well.
Sounds like an interesting world, but I don't know if it translates very well to MMO. It's more like old school roleplaying, where you solve mysteries, save the girl, try to keep your friend from being sacrificed by a cult, lots of intrigue and danger, not so much constantly chopping monsters and doing fed ex missions.
CoC's a great universe and makes for great RPGs, but it'd never work as a MMO. Especially if they went by the Chaosium table top game as an influence. Raid bosses would drive you insane just by seeing a half shadowed glimpse of them, and god forbid you actually see one in action. The whole point is simply trying to survive. It'd have to be a game with permadeath and that would never go over. Sorry, there's no coming back from the dead in the Mythos and the only Resurrection spell is best left untouched because even a zombie can kick your ass. You'd end up shacking up in a cottage somewhere with Elder Signs all over the place praying to whatever deity best fits you that the tentacle beasts won't find you... and hoping that Hounds of Tindalos won't emerge from one of the many corners of the room and maul you.
Using Lovecraftian imagery and influences is probably best. You can get all the tentacles and twisted bleakness while still making the universe a place you might actually want to hang around in. The true Lovecraft universe is a bleak, uncaring place filled with demonic horrors that want to swallow you at best, and drive you insane at worst. Kind of like High School, only with more tentacles and no chance of ever graduating.
Someone mentioned Dreamlands, but that's just as bad. You'd end up in Ulthar and some noob would whack a cat and then *boom* everyone dies. You don't kill cats in Ulthar. Ever.
Way to quotable :P
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Well the noob in Ulthar would die if he killed a cat, not everyone, thats Social Lovecraftinism for you
Its the power differance between the players and their enemies that helps make CoC so special, how could a MMO keep that set up?
A true Lovecraftian myuthos MMORPG would not make it past ratings boards and would have a very difficult time getting investors.
Even bigger budget horror movies based on Lovecraft conveniently censor aspects of the stories to get them into mainstream video rental chains. The most accurate movies and radio dramas talk about the more disturbing aspects in an abstract manner which many people don't realize what is actually being discussed. Good luck finding big investors who will gamble on a game which may never get to see a release even after development.
Until the average person considers video games a proper for of media for expression I highly doubt you will see anything like a big budget Lovecraft MMO. The best bet for a video game actually close to a Lovecraft story is an indie developer creating a offline game which requires very little upkeep to supporty and maintain.
Sad, but true.

Thank you for posting this. This game had totally gone under the radar for me. Now, it's one I will be watching closely. Of course one has to be cautious when looking at a Funcom game, but I'm hopeful.

Just to say SW is not based on Lovecraft, it just borrows some themes, looks interesting.
This.
There is a big difference between saying something is “Based on” and saying it’s “Influenced by”.
I’m on the official Secret World boards helping with the puzzles every time a new one comes out, it’s a great community and a great dev team. I’d really suggest checking it out.
Also, I understand being wary of a funcom game, I really do. It helps though if you try and think of it as a RagnarTornquist game instead.
This is probably as close as you're going to get
If it was purely lovecraftian you'd turn into a weeping pile of insanity in the fetal position if you ever saw that. We're talking about about a being that just exsists in too many planes at one time and gets great joy out of crushing the human mind via showing it(tenderizes the soul before eating).
Granted such a game probably wouldn't be the best for an MMO that focuses on fighting.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
NOOOO dont tell me FAILCOM is making this.... I thought the secreat world was some lame ase Kiddy game.
Well to bad LOVECraft deserved alot better .....
