I have been wondering the same thing for a long time now. I tried to go back after three years or so of not playing but when I tried to get back into the game there weren't any new players for me to make friends with and have a good time with like in the good days. For some reason I have been going through all my memories of this game a lot tonight, the group gameplay in this game was just so much of a lasting memory for me. Anyways I guess my point is that I would go back to playing Everquest in a heartbeat if I knew I had other people to play the game with me.
You could go back only to learn that you should not have.
It is entirely up to you, however. I am playing Vanguard with a free month, and I have been enjoying myself. Did you have a Vanguard account? Old accounts are active until July 1st I THINK.
Go back to a game after that long time is usually not a good idea. Computer games ages quite badly and you are risking to destroy some of your found memorys.
There are rumours that SOE actually will make a remake of EQ, probably for PS3 and that would work but right now you should probably try Vanguard or EQ2 instead, the graphics of a 10 year old game ain't pretty.
Of course it is youre choice but I myself always got dissapointed when I tried something older then 5 years again...
I have been pondering this thought for some time now, should i go back to EQ? hmmm, anyone got any reasons why i should?
Reasons? Let's see..
1. You miss it, because you had fun it in, but left for whatever reasons many years ago.
2. You've heard some good changes they've made to the game, such as mercenaries from the latest expansion, and you are interested in trying them out. You've also heard that they've reduced death penalty, added lots of content for single groups, and that just about everybody & all classes can solo progress these days. In other words, they've improved on things that made you quit the game 5 years ago.
3. You've played just about all MMO's released in the past 5 years and now you are out of games to play.
4. The newer generation MMO's don't satisfy you the way EQ1 did, in terms of lore, depth, content, freedom, and longevity.
5. You've heard about a new server coming up, release date will be announced at the soe fan faire, and you want to get ahead start to get used to the game again....and possibly play on the new server with lots of other players.
There, I've listed 5 of the reasons why I came back with 2 others after being gone for 5 years trying out all other MMO's. Having played the game for 3 months now, I don't regret that decision one bit, and I'm one of those that swore to never play EQ1 again in 2004. I can't guarantee you'll like the game, some people like it some don't. But that's the nature of games, they aren't made for everybody. The important part is for you to play the game that *you* find fun in, not the games that other people want you to play.

But like I said, some returning players are having a great time, while some others aren't. But you asked if there's any reason to return, I listed some for ya
Here's a good EQ1 guide updated recently by Almar, another player that have returned recently. Some useful information and lots of frequently asked questions & answers:
Those are great reasons to go back but for me the thing I loved about EverQuest the most was the grouping... I guess with mercs it would have sort of the feeling of being in a group but I loved the connections I made with people. I dunno... Is it really possible to solo with any class now?

Solo level, yes. But mercs take up a group slot, and they take your exp just like a regular group member would. So for classes that soloed well before, they could still do so today without the mercs. The mercenaries simply allow everybody the choice to take their merc out to play, level, get some AA's, or farm some mobs by themselves if they want to. Of course mercs are also great for the times when you can't find a group, or if you are deep in a dungeon somewhere and your tank or healer leaves without a warning (always happens when you really need them ugh). Instead of starting over, or wait another hour for a replacement, you could whip out the merc with your group and continue playing.
Mercs give you the choice so nobody has to sit on their hands shackled by the forced grouping gameplay that EQ1 was known for. It's part of the reasons why many are returning to the game, and partly the reason why I came back.
Now if you like grouping, there's plenty of it. For one, mercs can't enter raids, so guilds will still need all the bodies they can get for raids. Secondly there are lots of single group content that you can't really do alone, not even with a merc duo. So you would need to group people, or box multiple characters.

Good luck in your decision-making.
