Coffee and other energy drinks

Whats your opinion of caffine and legal stimulants in general?  I use to love them with a passion, now i hate them with a passion.  Today i drank coffe for the first time in awhile, felt GREAT for about 2 hours, was talking on vent more, was getting stuff organized, it was a blast.  Then BAM!  Caffine crash hit me so hard.  Today litterally felt like a year, wrecked with fatigue, pain, and overall malaise and sickness.  I dont see why someone would advocate a few hours of fun, for a ruined rest of the day.  I cant stand any stimulants anymore and will not ever take them again!  Its so pointless to put yourself through voulentary fatigue and sickness.  Im still feeling the aftereffects of the coffee and i drank it 12 hours ago.

Caffeine in moderation can really help with alertness and concentration.

It is a potent diuretic however, and in large doses can cause very unpleasant side effects including arrythmias.

Long term regular use will result in tolerance (reduction of the positive effects experienced), leading many to use ever greater quantities to achieve the same effects.

Also beware that caffeine has a definite "withdrawal" phase if a regular user stops suddenly.  A caffeine withdrawal headache is not a pleasant thing.

All that being said, I love a good cup of coffee and have a couple ev ery day.  As with everything moderation is key.

Other stimulants, including ephedra and prescription stimulants, can be much more dangerous.

Well, if speed is your drug of choice, then you won't have any failure to acquire a dose in the western world.

A few days ago, Red Bull energy drink have been rumored to have a cocaine content, Red bull from Thailand turned out negative, I just hope each and every energy drink out in the market will be tested as well. We don't want our health to be compromised by any kind of drugs.

Just about any Stimulant is going to have a backlash on your body.  Even 5 hour energy will probably have a backlash discovered in the future.  They all work by having your body use more energy beyond its typical rate leaving your body depleted later on.  The reason for a headache withdrawl to caffiene is because your body has adjusted to the caffiene and now works with it.  When it no longer is there it gives you a headache because it is trying to produce energy without the catalyst.  Extended use of Caffiene makes the body use it more effeciently, but it also leads to higher blood pressure, less of an effect, and hypertension.

Since any corp putting a schedule II controled substance intheir product would stand to lose all of their assets (in the U.S. at least), I think you can rest assured that this is a rather silly urban legend.

Edit- FYI hypertension and high blood pressure are the same thing

If you want to get technical, caffeine is a competetive inhibitor of adenosine. Regular users of caffeine produce increased amounts of adenosine to compensate over time, so when the inhibitor is removed the adenosine (which is a vasodilaor among other things) can cause severe headaches.

Tests in Germany determined there are trace levels of a coca leaf extract in Red Bull.  Several german states have banned the sale of Red Bull in them. This same extract is in several other commercially available products.

No urban legend but it is an over reaction by some of the German government.

Yes, but not cocaine.  Imagine if everyone selling hemp fiber products were accused of selling marajuana.

try drinking a glass of home made chocolate milk. Not too much, 10 ounces or so. seriously, works great for sustained energy without the crash. Wont give you the jolt of caffiene, but it is known to give you a nice lift that lasts for a lot longer than caffiene

I myself am not a coffee fan. The taste isn't bad but i just dont fancy it. And it doesn't keep me up as well, it's like a normal drink and i can easily sleep after drinking it. Apples are a different story though. I usually get sleepy around after lunch when im at work,  but when i started eating/drinking  apples/apple juice, i don't get drowsy are sleepy anymore. It has a good amount of caffeine and you have this healthy feeling since it's a fruit :) People who rely too much on coffee for energy should also try apples as a healthy alternative :)

Heh, milk makes me incredibly sick. (my native ancestry coming back to kick my white ancestry in the nuts)

    I'll stick with caffeine.

If you're going to drink an energy drink, black coffee is likely the best way to go.  Most energy drinks are loaded with garbage such as sugar.  Very bad for you and all those calories are not a good thing.  Caffiene is actually good for you as long as like all things don't overdo it.  One very nice thing about it is that it helps get sugar out of your bloodstream efficiently which means it good for preventing diabetes.

i love to drink full throttle, soda, and coffee anytime. hell i'll screw things up by having a full throttle at 2 a.m. I'm in good shape and exercise and am always out in the yard moving. The crashes can be really hard sometimes, and I dont care.

    feels good man

I went to college in another state, and I finally found this stuff called Venom, that not only works for me, but knocks me flat on my ass.

I used to think I was immune to caffeine. I worked at a convenience store, and I got unlimited free coffee for working there. And it just never worked. Ever. I dranks gallons of the stuff and felt tired still.

I love tea, but it actually makes me feel like falling asleep. It's delicious warm and tasty, so it always tastes like liquid contentment to me. Tea puts me in a happy place, which usually means that I'm passing out soon.

And no other energy drink did it for me. And they tasted like concentrated asshole. But I bought Venom on a whim, and that stuff kept me awake and jittery for the next 16 hours. Tasted pretty good, too.

Had the bad side effect of making me have more unpredictable mood swings than a pregnant bipolar woman. Meh. Too much Vitamin B does that, apparently.

"Venom" drinks have nothing more than trace amounts of ginseng extract, caffeine, guarana (more caffeine), L-carnitine, taurine, inositol, B vitamins, and a bunch of SUGARS.

    Ingredients from their website:

CARBONATED WATER, SUGAR, GLUCOSE, CITRIC ACID, MALTODEXTRIN, TAURINE, SODIUM CITRATE, GLUCURONOLACTONE, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, GINSENG EXTRACT, L-CARNITINE, INOSITOL, CAFFEINE, SODIUM BENZOATE (PRESERVATIVE), CARAMEL COLOR, POTASSIUM SORBATE (PRESERVATIVE), NIACINAMIDE (VITAMIN B3), GUARANA, SUCRALOSE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), CYANOCOBALAMIN (VITAMIN B12).

L-carnitine is involved in fatty acid metabilism, and Taurine is a nonessential amino acid.

Ginseng may have some noteworthy effects but it is present in subclinical doses in "energy drinks"

Inositol is an alcohol with multiple functional groups that  is a precursor for compounds used in multiple biological processes.

Rest assured the vast majority of drinks like this depend on caffeine and sugar for the vast majority of their effects.

    Edit-fixed typo
