Sony Involvment with this title

KhalathwyrKhalathwyr Member UncommonPosts: 3,133

Okay, asking a non-baiting, legitimate (in my opinion) question so if you take it as anything other than that you're a moron.

Question: How much involvment/what kind of involvment does Sony have with this game, taking into account it's predecessor?

**I understand SOE is not making this game and my question refers to Sony as a whole, not just the SOE department.**

That said...

I see that Square Enix is making it for the PS3 and PC and I didn't see (on their site) a Sony logo anywhere else to suggest they have a hand in it's development in any fashion, including the distribution portion after launch. Is it truly "Sony hands off" or "Sony-free" or will it be akin to what happened with Vanguard with Sony handling distribution (initially) and such?

I was/am a fan of the first Final Fantasy versions released in the US (where it was actual fantasy/medieval setting as opposed to the newer emo sci-fi versions) and never got around to the first FF MMO but, depending on how invloved Sony is with this game, taking into account every possible portion of it (from development to distribution), I may give it at least 30 days.

Thanks for any and all serious responses (and even the not-so-serious but informative ones) to my questions.

If I recall, $ony has been providing the servers for FFXI since launch worldwide, so I see them doing the same for FFXIV.  I don't think they'll have much more involvment than that considering how harsh they treated SE in the past with the HD issues the PS2 went through and then cancelling it worldwide...etc!

Honestly I don't see why Squeenix would ever wanna do business with them again after that, but sad to say $ony does have some damn good servers that are always on and work for the most part in all their MMOs!

Print-Screened the banner in pieces, opened it in Photoshop and put it back together!  I've got it in small, and massive sizes...hehe!

Square Enix doesn't have a whole lot of love for Sony and they have their own distribution or so I gather. It's nothing like Vanguard or such, FF has no involvement with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) but only with the parent company Sony and only as much as they need, like servers and playstation releases.

I wouldn't fear the taint of SOE here. :p

I know the Sony hate here is strong but as far as SE goes they have been partnered with Sony since SE switched the majority of their franchises from Nintendo to the PS1.

That part I could give a rats butt about. The customer service part. In the entire time I have been playing MMOs (since 1997) I have contacted customer support a grand total of 2 times, both with Turbine and both with more than stellar results.

As for the SOE hate mentioned above, 1) it's not like it isn't justified (there is no statute of limitation for disliking a company, after which you are obligated to give them the benefit of doubt), and 2) noone on this planet gets to decide or pass judgement on how any other person feels about their gaming experiences. I'd dare say the majority of folks have experienced bad treatment (from their perception) from some entity and thus will never use that entity again, whether in gaming or other aspects of life. SOE decided they didn't want me as a customer anymore with their decision of the NGE and nowhere is it mandated that I have to sit around like a lapdog waiting to play anything they ever create. And I'm 100% okay with that, lol!

Here's my list, order != significance.

    1: Servers ( Probably )

    2: Customer Support ( Unlikely )

    3: Localization ( I'm reaching with this one )

That's about it really. Their involvement is very small.

No I dislike Sony as well, at least whenever it comes to anything PC they have their hands in.

Not sure but I think SE handles all aspects of the game including servers which is why we pay the monthly fee. Think about why would Sony still let SE use their servers to let players from Xbox use them? The only aspect Sony offers to SE is the ability to make games for their console. So I'm pretty sure SE has total control over the entire game.

Okay so I used google :D (or dogpile in my case)

And SoE and SE do have a behind the scenes relationship I can't say how good it is as you can start seeing a trend where Square no longer promises anything to Sony. The only thing I found that gives claim that FFXI uses SoE servers and/or customer service is this:

“Sony Online Entertainment has been a great partner for FINAL FANTASY XI in the U.S. market, and we are excited to work with them again in offering EVERQUEST II to gamers in Japan,” said Yoichi Wada, president, Square Enix. “By combining our sophisticated community management skills with SOE’s great content, we believe EVERQUEST II will have a tremendous impact on the online gaming community.” source

So SE publishses and maintains EQ2 in Japan, so basically what SOE did for them with FFXI they did with EQ2. Scratch my back I scratch yours?

Anyhoo, still SOE doesn't have a hand in FF14's development I had heard Square had learned from EQ2 and I guess this could be why they've already worked with the game. But they are not taking input from SOE.

My personal guess on the subject on why it would only be released on ps3 over the other current consoles is the quality of the systems hardware. The other systems dont have the visual output nor the ram or processing speed to handle a higher quality visual intense game like ff14 will be.
