From Everquest to WoW now to what?

Hello all,

I am a new poster to the boards.  I have been reading here for several years and today I come to you with hat in hand asking some opinions.  I started playing Everquest back in the day when people dinged 50 it was announced to the entire game and Velious was just showing up on the patcher as "Coming Soon!" (with the hot elf in the background).  Time progressed and me and my buddies played it for years (through the time when Plane of Time was endgame).  We spent some time in Star Wars Galaxies and then eventually moved to WoW.  We started WoW on opening day and have been there fulltime since.  Other than the occasional cheating with Conan and WAR.

Now to the reason of the thread.  I am leaving the WoW scene due to I just need a change.  This isn't to flame any game, however; it is to get some opinions.  I would like something with the crafting like SWG had.  I thought that was incredible that you could actually build gear that was worth something (I know WoW had similar but bear with me).  I am now retired to a casual gamer after graduating college and I have a family so the 8 hours a day isnt going to happen anymore.  The old WoW PvP was awesome, but lately it has left me a bit wanting.

These are the games I am considering

AION

Eve Online  - How is the crafting ?  What can you tell me about it?

Neo Steam (only from the advertisements, not from peoples reviews)

I would love to see some opinions.  Ideas and thoughts about more games.  Personally I dont care if they are free to play, free to download, or what ever.  But I do care that the content involves me and I "want" to log in to play.

I have done a lot of reading online about these, but I wanted to bring it to the community here and ask opinions.

Thanks!

Brian

You might just be burned out on WOW and just need a short  break from it. My advice would be to check out the free trials alot of games offer or try some of the free to play games. After afew weeks you'll probably want to go back to WOW. That's what I do alot anyway.

I understand where your coming from man. I personally would like to play EQ agian pre-LoY...but i dont think thats going to happen. Ive never played SWG so i dont know what there crafting is like but the crafting in Vanguard is pretty fun. The game has changed alot since launch and my pally always gets /tells for groups without having to look around. Its cassual gamer friendly. If you want to check it out there is a the Free Trial Island....most of the subs start there anyway now cause the gear is awsome. On the free trial you wouldnt be able to leave the island but it might give you a good idea if its for you or not. Oh and ive been playing for about a month now and havent crashed once lol

Neo Steam? Never heard of it so I can't really comment on it.

Aion would be similar to WoW, but my experiences have shown it is a new-degree improved version of it as it also inclused mechanics from many other games, it's not a clone but rather a succesful Frankstein (in the good sense). Crafting in that game is nice, you feel like you work on it and the crafting can fail or have critical success, which makes the crafted item produced way better than expected and that's when you can get rich or powerful with your own crafted items.

EVE is a completely new experience, because it is a sci-fi space game setting and it uses a completely different skill and level (or no level, heh) system and it is a sandbox in the sense you choose how to play it as it has unlimited ways of being played. I only find myself playing it occasionally though, you should give it a try, because if you will be trying Aion, you have free time until it is released anyway.

Although it's far from perfect, I might recommend EQ2 to you.  It's got the EQ lore that you might appreciate, combined with a gameplay style more similar to WoW than EQ1.  Mastercrafted items are as good as almost all items at any given level, with the exception of rare "fabled" drops.  In fact, most twinked characters use strictly crafted items until they hit end game.  There's a ton of content and despite the deservedly bad reputation of SOE, they've done a fantastic job with the game.  It's not without it's flaws, but I would definitely suggest downloading the free trial and trying it out.

Let us know what you decide!

Thanks for all of the replies!

Interesting about the responses on Vanguard.  It was not on my radar at all.  I just went to the site and was reading up on it.  Does anyone else have insight on Vanguard?

  • VallanorVallanor Member Posts: 103

My personal opinion of Vanguard is that it has a lot of the makings of a great game on paper, but for some reason didn't really pan out the way I'd hoped.  It was supposed to be the "spiritual successor" to the original EverQuest, which would have been amazing.  I've tried it out three or four times, but could never really get into it enough to subscribe longer than a month at a time.  I wish I could be less vague, lol, but I never really could decide what I didn't like about it.

That being said, I'm pretty sure it's got a free trial as well so you might as well try it out.

Isn't this the question most people are asking here?  My advise is take a much needed break.  Then wow might look interesting again.

You should definitely give Aion a try.  I burned myself out on WoW almost two years ago, and last weekend's Aion beta event was the first time since then that I've been able completely lose myself in the game.

It does play a lot like WoW, but I think that's mostly due to the MMO genre itself.  It does have some enhancements.  Obviously it's visually stunning, and I really enjoyed having an entirely new world to explore.  The community so far seems great, as well, not a lot of asshats and whiners, though that could change at any time.

I've just started playing Vanguard after a friend recommended it to me and I'm really enjoying it.

My first impression is that it's very similar to WoW although without the training wheels, if you will.  Wow is a bit more simplified. Also, although I have yet to really delve into it, I've been told that the crafting system is amazing. One of my close friends, someone that's tried just about every MMO imaginable, stated that he feels Vanguard has the best crafting system of any game he's played.  That's his opinion.  But, he did also mention that you should choose to level first before jumping into crafting as it is very time consuming.

Diplomacy is another part of the game that makes things interesting, but I'm still getting my feet wet in that regard and therefore shouldn't give an opinion one way or the other.

As far as the world is concerned, it is enormous and the real beauty is that you can pretty much get to any place you can see, unlike most other games where you are limited in exploring, by hills, mountains, etc.  Furthermore, if you turn on Antialiasing in your graphics card settings to 4x or more, you will be treated to one of the best looking games out there at the moment this side of AoC.  However, keep in mind that AoC is instanced where from what I can tell so far, Vanguard is one big open world. One caveat, you need a pretty nice system to run the game it all it's splendor.

Finally, in regards to one of the posters comments up above.  I would try Vanguard before EQII if you were a fan of EQ.  I've never played EQ, but from what I've heard from both my friend and others, Vanguard plays a lot more like EQ than EQII does.

    Hope that helps.

    Your fail comment, failed.

Humm, as far as crafting goes EQ2 is easily the best in that catagory. The crafting in EQ2 is actually fun. Yes, I know it is hard to believe. Aion is impressive looking. I really like the animations. The ability to have three dimensional combat is also interesting. Aion is not out yet thou. I was not a fan of EVE.

I have been playing AoC mostly since retiring from the WoW raiding scene. I am having fun in the very casual raid scene but the crafting is extremely limited.

EVE is the best game on the market today if you want freedom. And want a personal challenge. I played it since 2004 and the game Rules period.

If you want to be entertained I say try the following: Pirates of the burning sea, alot more fun then you would think, if you like to Yarr! on the high seas. Lord of the rings, this game is actually good from a Pve standpoint, you have a few things in the game that WoW do not have like player housing, cool lore etc.

Or wait for AION, its a korean game, and its NCsoft (urk). But the last reviews from Koreans they are suporting this title alot better. So it migh be the new game for you.  But at the end of the day it will be alot like wow...

So EvE if you like to challenge yourself mentaly ( you actually have to make your own fun in this game), the word 6 month plan comes to mind when you play EvE alot. dont expect fast thrills and fun times. This games is pure hardcore, its more of a social experiment then a game haha.

Pirates of the burning sea and Lotro are fun times like any other post WoW mmorpg.

ps: all of them have free trails so just try them all, after that you will know if any of them are for you.

Dunno how people like Vanguard I logged in after hearing about improvements and straight away you see an ugly character creation screen and ugly character models. You get into the game the quests are boring and the art style is so bland it looks like a game from 2001 and the world is just empty and very ugly. Then you see the animations and log off.

Give the MMORPG Finder a try

It gives you suggestions of MMOs based on what features you like (PVE, PVP, Char customization, etc)

    Good Luck

I second this.  If you keep asking others to find you video games you probably aren't going to get what you're looking for.  Put in some time and research the titles that look appealing.  It'll be a lot less time spent 'trying' out recommended games and more time spent leveling in the one you want.
