Lately the only things in the "mass multiplayer online" game genre have been fantasy/sci fi rpgs or shooters. Why the hell doesnt someone start making a few real-time strategy MMO games? I'd really like to see a game where you can actually battle it out for control of a persistant world in the MMO playing field. Kind of almost makes me wish Blizzard would have stuck with WoW being just one gigantic online RTS game, there's some actual innovation there.

There actually was an MMORPG/RTS a couple years ago called Fighting Legends. It didn't get any advertising, wasn't a lot to do, and it was kind of buggy. So, obviously it didn't last long and was canceled a couple months after it was released. Nonetheless, it had some of the concepts of an RTS.
You started off with one character. You could choose from a handful of different races/classes. There were mages, archers, spiders, cats, half-people/half-vehicles, and some others I forget about.
As usual you went around and killed things to level up and there was a Diablo II like skill tree. When you went up every couple levels though you could add another character to play with. So, eventually you would have multiple characters on the screen at once. They would stay in formation when you were moving around so it was just like controlling one. However, when you started fighting you could individually control their actions. Also you could trade characters with other players. Since mages only had the option of adding other mages to their group, they could trade with an archer for an archer character instead of just having purely mages in a group.
There was also a mobile base thing you could deploy anywhere. It had to be deployed in order to resurrect if you died. And it gathered resources which you needed in order to make another character to add to your group. I know it had some other functions as well but I can't remember.
Not to mention it was PvP at all times, but I think it was limited to people within a certain amount of levels.
... Thinking back about this game... it's a shame it died it could have turned out to be a lot of fun. I think a lot of people would have really like its' anime style graphics and fighting.
You might want to give Shattered Galaxy a try. It is a MMORTS and is very bug-free and (almost) Unhackable. Of course the hack that does exist everyone good uses(maphack).
Of course at one point someone told me my password...Via hacking directly into their servers.....
You control an avatar and you can buy units. You can use a max of 12 units in a battle at a time. You fight over little maps with up to 72 people for control of that map....Of course maps are largly meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
Your avatar's stats control stuff. Tactics = how many units you can bring at a time(6-12). Mech Apt = How much crap you can wedge onto each unit. Education = how high a tech level units you can use. Clout = how 'heavy' the maximum unit you can upgrade to is.(Makes each unit tougher & faster)
It's got very poor graphics but enough people to keep it going, and it's free up to and includeing max level....
There are reincarnation events every 3 months, you can go back to level 1 in return for a couple of extra stat points permantly added to your charecter....You must be a paying customer to reincarnate.(Of course you only have to pay one month out of every 3...)

Priest is an FPS/MMORPG. You pick whether you want to fight for good or evil, then go to work blating other players who have chosen the opposite side.
A quote I found online about it is here:
Game design and team leader Ji-hak described the game as, "A multiplayer, head-to-head combat game that introduces controversial themes in a Wild West setting. It is an action/horror MMORPG that creates a grim and gruesome ambiance while providing a healthy dose of gory, violent action." Ji-hak went on to tell interviewers that, "Priest introduces a unique player vs. player/NPC structure and item/pet fusion system to create an FPS-like role-playing game in an entirely new genre."
I haven't heard much about it though, so it might suck. I dunno cause I've never played it ^^
There is already a game like that called
"Shattered Galaxy"
Re-incarnation is a nice way to keep real hardcores busy if implemented nicely in any MMORPG, can significantly reduce the grind because you can re-incarnate so often it is grindier then possibly imaginable.
Semi-hardcores and casuals could aggravate on the re-incarnation system if not implemented well and plainly enforced on them. Re-incarnation stats should NOT affect your abilities in every zones, some places should not consider re-incarnation stats...those places would keep your casuals happy and many of them will never exit those place, so they should see most of the content(and almost all the graphics) of the game.
I love Rome Total War(Medevial is better) despite the fact I never do the battles and fights myself, I dont enjoy that at all. The fact I can win the game at the highest level and I dont need to play that part of the game I dislike is vital in my liking of the game. See, they never enforce on me that warcraft like fighting system, this is why I enjoy what they have to offer and I ignore what I find revulsive(even if appealing for most).
Re-incarnate, if handled properly, can be an incredibly strong asset to any MMORPG. Some races or class could be restricted to re-incarnated characters(many times possibly), as long as you dont keep any real options from players not doing it, stats in a specific setting only or differents graphics are okay to handle to folks that earn it very hard...but saying something major is off limit without extremely hard work, is just plainly wrong...a few specific aspec high ends zones dont qualify as major if they are not having to many special features that make the rest of the game a second and weakest game.

WoW is as close as you will get.
And not because WoW is anything like an RTS, but only because it has warcraft in it's name.
