New rig and still tons of hitching and stuttering.

MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

Was hoping to find some tips or advice on how to eliminate this. My fps hangs around 40-60 fps but when I'm running around I still get hitching and jerking as new textures load and I'm not sure what's going on. I've tried a lot of graphic tweaks and .ini changes and it doesn't seem to be related to how my graphic settings are, it happens regardless. Here is my info:

Intel i7 920 processor (oc'd to 4 ghz - liquid cooling)

Nvidia Gtx 295

Windows Vista 64 bit

6 gig DDR3 1333 RAM

1000 watt power supply

Asus P6T X58 motherboard

300gb 10000 rpm velociraptor hard drive.

Really hoping for some help here. I would love to play this game but the hitching and stuttering is driving me nuts!  Is it just the game itself and the fact that as you go to new areas they have to load into your cache?

I have defragged also.

    Its not you, its the client. Performance issues plague this game. I have a similar rig to yours and I get the same thing. Not a very good game anyway in my opinion.

  • HricaHrica Member UncommonPosts: 1,129

    its the game, not your rig.

    I have the new i7 aswell (this processer is hard as HE** to keep cool) and I still get crap performance.

    I can't believe its been...3 years? and these issues.

    Well, hold that thought, SoE just fixed the EQ2 client so it won't crash on highest settings. Took since 2004 till this past spring to do it.

    Yeah...not much you can do at this point. I have a rig that can run AoC at max settings dx10..relatively smoothly. almost maxed fps..and Lotro Maxed Dx10..at max fps.(for my screen that is 60fps)...but stutters constantly on Vanguard....and believe it or not....WOW...which pisses me off.   Before WoTLK...i ran WOW with BC xpac...smoother than silk on ati x1300pro and 3.0ghx celeron D with 2 gig ram on wind XP(32).....but with 6 gig ram..a GTX275 OC edition...an intel i7 920   2.6ghz and windows vista 64bit....wow with bc and wotlk averages 30-41 fps...with lots of stut-t-t-t--ter. Sucks.

    Mine is working fine which is kinda odd, my 280 GTX is just yor GFX cards smaller brother...

    But it seems like it working fine for some and bad for others and the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem.

    I run XP however so maybe the game runs worse in Vista????

    Here is parts of my Dxdiag anyways. The problem is interesting, people seems to think that people who runs good or bad is lying but I think the problem is that VG run something badly, can you guys post the same and tell how it runs for you also?

    We should be able to figure out what the problem is, it sure as heck ain't the OPs excellent hardware.

    In my case it could very well be the XP/Vista change. Judging from WOW running smooth in XP with a 5 year old graphics card.and old arse cpu..but running choppy as hell with Vista and a brand new CPU and GPU...granted they added all the shite and tweaked lighting, shadows and lord knows in WOTLK...but it should ..at least even out..

    Can you post your vgclient.ini file? Or at least the relevant parts of it?

    VG has some issues on Vista. Not sure if hitching was one of them. I'm running VG with a laptop nowhere near as beefy as your setup and it runs fine. I get hitching every now and then, but it's not that common.

    Something may be wrong with your setup if you are having trouble keeping your i7 cool.  This CPU is widely known to run cooler than most CPU's.  I have my 920 overclocked to 3.2Ghz on the stock air cooler and it never heats up.  People routinely get a nice stable 4GHz on liquid.

    A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

    It's funny you mention this because I actually ran Vanguard better with my old system, which had half the hardware but WAS on Windows xp.

  • MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

    I tried one more thing tonight that didn't help.  I created a RAM drive and moved the Vanguard Cache folder over to it and linked it with MKlink.  No change in stuttering or hitching.  I've also tried running it in windows xp sp2 mode and that didn't help either.  sigh.  probably going to have to just move on I guess.

    This is pretty stock right now, but I did try messing with it according to some guides I found around the web and also on the support forums on the official site.  Nothing helped so now it's back to a pretty stock set up.  Still, if anything seems out of place let me know and I'll try a tweak.

    There is similar info to what you posted.  I can't say I'm an expert at this so maybe you can see something I don't as far as a possible problem?  I'm wondering if running DX10 could be the issue?  I'm open to suggestions.

    To me it seems most likely that it is Vista that is the problem, it is not a masterpiece in itself and both it and VG needs optimizing (even if that ain't gonna happen with Vista).

    Dx  10 could of course also be the culprit, maybe VG ain't running it good, but the OS is far likelier.

    Anymore with the same problem? You use Vista or XP and what Dx do you use?

    I think you are prolly right Loke. Seems to have something to do with Vista.

    I used to run VG on XP with dx 9 and I usually ran pretty smooth. Now I am on Vista with DX10 and run into alot more hitching. No other game I run seems to cause a problem...except VG. I find the hitching mostly when I cross a server line. Then if I am on a flying mount...I usually end up crashing into the ground. Or if I am running I will run right into a mob or off a cliff before I really see what is going on.

    Its not the client!. :P

    I run on a dcore 3,0ghz 4gb mem and a ati 3870x2   on FULL gfx.  everyting fully up and not a problem.

    Your running on a 64BIT vista system.  whit 6gb mem..  plain stupit.

    Anyone who buys a I7 and thinks it will run games just as smoot as older system is wrong.

    infact , older games give loads of trouble running on newer systems.  every game is affected by this.

    the most populair mmo by date is Wow.  back in the days we had our nice 8800gtx cards and  loads op people complained about artefecs and other wierd grapical isues in WoW .   it was becource the game was not made whit this kinda of card gpu in mind.

    Make a dualboot system and just drop vista 32bit on it. use that for games and use the 64bit for proccesing power needs.

    Its the sole reason I dont upgrade, most (older) games simply do not have perfect suport for newer systems.Its like trying to run win98 on a duocore machine. on paper it all should be better but in practice you run against os restrictions.

    Im not saying the client is perfect but this defently aint a client thing..

    it is the client.

    and from looking at your vgclient.ini you appear to be running the game at either ballanced or high performance. Which is sad considering the quality of your pc.

    Sorry you have having difficulties, it's something with your set-up.  You've got a lot more rig than I do and I don't have performance issues.  I've had good luck with Vista-32, haven't tried Vista-64

    You've got a newer card on Vista with DX10, but you're running older shaders. When I switched shader settings in the vgclient file, my performance improved dramatically. Under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice], change these:

    MaxPixelShaderVersion=255
    DisableShaderModel3=True

    to:

    MaxPixelShaderVersion=300
    DisableShaderModel3=False

    You've already got the precaching turned on which is another big performance booster.

    Not guaranteeing that'll solve the problem since you're on Vista. I'm running it on XP without any performance issues.

    Current: None
    Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
    Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
    Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

    So it turns out that you do think that vanguards performance is luck based.  Lucky if the game decides to run good on your computer then?

    I'm running on vista 64 and the game runs great for me.  So the issue isn't that vista 64 is a problem.

    One thing that some people have problems with is sound.  One quick test to try is to disable sound in the game and see if that affects your performance.  If it does you might try playing with sound options and check to see if there is an updated sound driver for your motherboard.

    I had this problem with another game, titan quest, and ended up going to the site of the sound chip manufacture to get a sound driver that worked with my motherboard.  This helped my performance in titan quest which doesn't necessarily relate to VG as I'm not sure I was playing VG so I don't know that it helped.  But I do know that VG has had performance issues related to sound drivers.

    It is easy to test there is a check box in the settings to disable sound, check it, restart the game and see.

    You'll get it running Margulis, plenty of people run VG just fine in Vista 64.  Someone's suggestion here will do the trick.

    And Bodeus, how about no more nasty PMs OK?  Rather pathetic.
