EVE Online is the only true PVP MMO to ever be released.
Other games have PVP, some better than others, but _real_ PVP is only supplied by EVE Online as you can PVP with anything, even the economy. Forums (pre-GOONS) was an important PVP tool. Ingame politics, hatred, feuds, diplomacy, alliances - EVE has everything and everything is open for PVP.
There is only one rule - as long as you leave it ingame - anything goes. Now that's real PVP.
(cheating/exploiting the game is not allowed in any game so that's a given).
Although I love Darkfall....I can't say it has great PVP. The system needs work. That said, it has the POTENTIAL to be the best PVP MMO on the market..but it's gonna take a bit of time.
Another thing to consider of course is that no matter WHAT people say, you can't just jump in and start fighting...unless you just want to die a lot. You'll need to build up your skills to a level where you are able to be competitive, and that takes some serious time.
Personally it doesn't bother me, as I like a game with long-term goals and a long road to pwnage...but the less patient may have issues with the system as it is.
Guildwars I would say. It have no open world PvP however, if you want that you should try Eve instead. But no game have more fast paced, well balanced PvP.
I guess Guild Wars take the cake. I never played DaoC but I did play Warhammer and while the pvp isn't horrible, WoW completely dominates it in every aspect except an emphasis and reward for world pvp.
Dark Age of Camelot on the Mordred pvp server ... hands down and believe me when I say, I have tried em all.
Well you can say that because they didn't specify "ever" or "currently".
The average high population for Mordred for months was... 6.. now it shows down most of the time (probably for the upcoming merger or w/e they decided to do with it).
If we're going to go best MMO for PvP ever... my hands down is early Ultima Online... no other western MMO came close to that experience... The in this "ever" category I respect the opinion of the person I quoted... as it was definitely a pvp experience on the dreds back in the day (ya there used to be two of them!!)
currently if I had to pick one... maybe EvE just because of population. (DAoC will get an infusion of activity for a few months after they allow transfers to the new server.. just because people will dust off the characters they haven't play on dead clusters for a bit).
Guild Wars if you prefer the setup it uses... /shrug
Daoc isnt' real pvp. Running in, dying, then respawning to rinse and repeat is retarded. It's like an FPS. The only *real* PvP games right now are EVE and Darkfall.
...
You do know that only happens when one either is outmatched, or sucks, right?
Don't think I ever had that problem in DAoC, Granted I played Midgard and was in a guild that pretty soundly stomped the competition.
I'd personally say DAoC has some of the best PvP in a general regard, because the gameplay is good and pace is generally good.

asherons call is the best pvp game i ever played. i have yet to find a game that can match its fun level . you actually need skill to kill your enemy. lol or gank but even in a gank you can still win if you use skill. best pvp game ever, atleast in my book.
If you enjoy arena style pvp then Guild Wars is the best by a long shot.
There are various other games for world pvp or battleground/scenario type pvp, they have all been mentioned, DAOC, Warhammer, EVEOnline, Darkfall (never played this one though), even Lineage 2 (takes a while to get to the good stuff though), Planetside had the best pvp experience for me but I'm not sure how well that is going currently. That's all I can think of for pvp focused games.

CS knife fighting with a lackluster set of abilitys ISNT REAL pvp.
But if you just want 'hardcore' PvP without so much role play then WWIIoL wins every time.
One shot kills (based on a very advanced damage model so not all shots are instant kills.) so very 'hardcore' - in fact many (so called) PvP players leave because it is too hard.
while its true DAoC is the best pvp/rvr game ever made, by a long shot..
it is NOT the best pvp/rvr game to play. so if this thread is made to find suggestions on what to play, DAoC is a poor answer.
first off, the pvp server has 6 people on it at prime time. no big deal because the rvr is as good as anything you have played so you don't need that server. only problem is you will get owned, owned, owned, and then owned nonstop for months and months until you can learn everything you need to learn, grind everything you need to grind, and acheive realm ranks that can compete with people. and even after you do that, you are playing people who have been doing it for 7 years. your not going to overcome them, at best you might kill them once in a blue moon if you catch them in a bad position(i.e. already fighting someone or severly outnumbered)
oh and you also will have to buy 2 copies of the game or no matter how good you are, no matter how much you play, you will get owned.
but seriously at this moment its Darkfall, and when MO will come out it will be there along with it. EVE also, even though I dont play it I respect the PVP guidelines and death penalties.
Guild Wars, War, AoC I consider PVE games
EDIT: and the Daoc fanboys, drop the little tag team match that DAOC is, give it a break seriously. In terms of PVP old school Asheron's Call Darktide shits all over DAOC mordred or whichever server you want. There is a reason all the old school PVP guilds, the serious ones, are AC DT vets. No one brags about playing DAOC.
How anyone can include Darkfall in this thread is unbelievable. The game is barely into beta stage and shows it. All Darkfall is is an example of how not to write a MMO.
I would have to put AC1 Darkside, UO, Eve, and DAoC as being the best pvp games to date.

I would say Eternum Online. Open PVP anywhere outside a city... UO style.

All in all, I'd say it looks like the range that we have to choose from is pretty pathetic.
Thankfully there are some interesting-looking titles in the works.

Actually, DAoC pre zerg is really fun.
Mostly the 20-24 BG's is where a good portion of the DAoC Community stayed in.
Then came the twinks...
RF Online - pre F2P, when that game was P2P the community was as tight as my anus. and thats tight.
killing someone of another race actually meant something most of the time and felt freaking good. and not to meantion the chip wars.
But now thats dead and buried and CCR have rereleased it for all the 10 year old BR's to molest its good ol' self.

Arena type fights, nothing lost or gained but honor and constant tweaking of builds= guildwars
Kill a man burn down his house, drive his buisness into the ground and shun everyone who ever talked to him.= eve
Well I'm gonna wait til the Darkfall NA server opens in the next few months.
For now I'll play CoD:WaW and AoC.
Also, I hope the Global Agenda CB starts soon because that game looks great.
CS knife fighting with a lackluster set of abilitys ISNT REAL pvp.
Im talking to you dfo fanbois.
Depends on what you want of course...

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
Another vote for Eternum Online here (open PVP) www.eternumonline.com
PVP where you're stuck inside an instanced 'playpen' just isn't worth it imo.
Shadowbane for guild v guild combat.
Guild Wars for team v team combat.

Asheron's Call Darktide server hand down
I gotta say maple story best pvp out there most balanced and fast
Hehehe AC darktide, the good old days...
but seriously at this moment its Darkfall, and when MO will come out it will be there along with it. EVE also, even though I dont play it I respect the PVP guidelines and death penalties.
