The best way to make sure something gets in a game is have a large consensus. Gather up a bunch of people and go tell the devs you want it in the game (and bring some macho guy who can beat them up if they refuse - optional).
I think this is an awesome idea. If not blitzball though, as this is a different world, I still like the idea of incorporating some type of minigame like this. I wonder if they will put in a collectible card game too, like some of the other FFs have. Not Tetra Master though and not separate from the game, but incorporated within the game.(I hated the fact that their was a separate fee to play Tetra Master).
Any mini game really that can inspire a sense of motivation to play the game besides just leveling and pvping would be an excellent element to have in any game, expecially this one. Final fantasy has to live up to their name in mini games and all.
Mini games (like in Free Realms) are the way forward... however unlike Free Realms, for more mature games there should be a main path as well (ie... the boring grind all other MMOs have)
More people play "casual" games (like bejewelled, sudoku etc..) than video games. So incorporating it into an MMO can only be a good thing (from a business perspective). With the graphics of a video game and the fun factor of a mini game... plus the standard levelling track..
I think that could quite easily equal WoW with the right subscription or item shop business model.
So YES to Blitzball :-D
MMOs played (In order of how much I've liked them): Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Vanguard, City of Villains / Heroes, Guild Wars, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, Anarchy Online, Ryzom, Final Fantasy XI, Matrix Online, RF Online, Rappelz, Hero Online, Roma Victor
Haha! that would be great! Ill be doing Jechts shots all over the place
But i rly think games should have minigames into it, and having blitzball seems to be another branch that the game could offer. There will be people just playing the whole grinding and story prceddings, while others can dedecate themsleves just to play blitzball (or an ingame sport)
Would be a neat addition having blitzball in FF14. Sigh, but seems pretty unlikely...oh how i like to dream.
Though the idea is interesting and blitzball was relatively fun (though involving insane repetition). A similar 'new' casual game within the mmo would be a refreshing thing to have.
This would actually be pretty cool. Maybe make it a bit different some how, more original to XIV. It would certainly add another dimension to the game, casuals would probably love it. Make it where you can form your own team or pug it, but keep premades seperate from pugs. How cool would it be to have your own team with a group of friends?

From my long experience on changes, they have come from within a small niche community, probably close friends and Linkshell members of the devs.
Most of the changes i have seen come about have left me stifled/baffled even, as i heard no rumblings on the ideas nor anything at all,it seems the changes just came out of no where.I remember reading a post by a Square dev on some issues that would be addressed through a Q/A .Well i was again baffles as i saw no such Q/A ever put out to the public,so i am 100% positive ,changes are made through limited people, they do not really listen to the public at all.
look no further than the massive fish botting that went on for several years before they addressed it and EVERYONE was complaining about it,so nope they do not listen. Then they did not ask for our input they simply made changes that in the beginning hurt legit players more than the bots,so they really mess up or maybe it is planned that way ,who knows, but they make some VERY weird decisions at times.
I guess if you have ever read anything by the lead GM on the NA side of things, you would begin to understand that they have some real weirdos in charge ,so weird decisions would be expected.
Another example is the MENTOR system,i gave them that idea the first time i witnessed it playing EQ2,that was years before they introduced it so again ,they do NOT listen to the average player base.
On the Blitzball idea,i am not a big fan of it,but it might be a cool thing to do for Linkshells competition.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
On the whole "they don't listen to the public" aspect. I agree with you. To a point.
Let me see if I can break down my theory on this. Being that FFXI was first developed in Japan. They would be the public that get's the most attention. No matter how much input other countries give, although eventually some of the ideas come to fruition, the language barrier is a major problem in this regard. If you notice, over the years, SE at first NEVER spoke to the public, but recently they have changed that attitude and are showing a more familiar, friendly aspect.
I think, that now with the planned SIMULTANEOUS release of FFXIV around the world, that all countries may get a voice this time around. On top of that, I think SE may be giving more headway to the NA branch in delving for suggestions from the community on what direction to move their games in.
Then again, I could be completely wrong and nothing will change. I seriously doubt it though, as it wouldn't be a smart business move to ignore what other game companies are doing. Listening to the public.(I know, not all of them do a good job, but most still make the effort to find out the public opinion.)
Man, I'd love to see Blitzball in this game. It would be a kick to join a adventuring party with someone and be like, "Hey, aren't you the guy that scored that amazing OT goal over the Cazaban Cactuars? That was awesome!"
Since we're tossing it around, should it be completely separate from the main game, or should your current job affect how you play Ball? Like Dark Knights might have access to Blitzball abilities that make them great Forwards but you really want a Ninja on Defense because he has a better chance to strip the ball from an attacker and cause a turnover?
Or maybe Blitzball positions could be like jobs of their own within the minigame? That would be pretty cool...
Jeez, I'm getting my hopes up already and the game's still a year away. Stop it !
Same hope they don't add blizzball, one of the reasons I haven't played FFX it's an rpg not a sport game! and if they add hope it's like tetra master since people like me that loved the card game have to pay another fee to play the card game which was a bad move =/
Maybe that pokemon thing that person mentioned or chocobo races or something. I rather have PvP along those lines rather than arena PvP. Or a card game to play would be sweet.
Also I think FFXI did listen to the players but perhaps not us as much as those in the Asian market. *shrug* besides, I never complained about fishing bots and stuff. I was happen with the game and the changes made ect. I think the mentor system ect all game in a timely manner. They weren't added just for the sake of having they added it when it would actually help the game along since there started to be a larger gap between new and older players. IMO they know what they are doing.
Here here Nat, I have to think that SE has learnt alot in 9 years I look forward to the innovations in this game. Including the innovations in PvP and mini games... i hope for an in game card game... fun times to be had with something like that.

You didnt have to play the game it was optional btw. You were forced to play one game but it did not matter if you won or lost and was party of the story.

Yeah, personally I enjoyed Blitzball, I'm not a sports gamer, but it was a fun thing to dabble in, a bit of strategy and some micro-managing always agrees with me. Heh, I raped that one team you are forced to play, got like 5-1 against them.
Anything that can serve as an alternative to "grind X mobs/quests for Y faction" is great to me. Allow people to either pug groups for skirmishes, or group together for serious tournaments. Allow them to choose what they want to be, and as they perform that, gain exp for it. And also allow them to switch what they are, though they'll have to level that as well. Let fractions of this xp carry over to your character. That way, a person who isn't exactly into the grind can level up through a combination of the two and any other.

I would love to have blitzball.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
Blitzball would be fantastic, I would buy the game just for the reason to play it against other people.
But it would have to be the original FFX version of Blitzball, and not the FFX-2 Version which sucked.

Keep your FFX out of my FFXIV, how dare you sir!

Nontheless, I only wish the beta came sooner...

I certainly hope not. Not a fan of FFX or blitzball. Though I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of PvP in the same vein.

I like how they added pokemon to the game in the form of pankration thingy, and tied it in with ZNMs and such, fun pokemon mini game

If it was just an optional thing, I don't see why it would hurt. I'm not a fan of FFXI, but that doesn't mean I want them to take out Galkas
