Ships?

SunriderSunrider Member UncommonPosts: 527

This may or may not have been addressed previously but I was just curious if anyone had happened to hear anything about ships being in the game. I always loved this about SWG and they play such a huge part in ALL Star Wars games that I just don't feel it'd be Star Wars without them. Even in KOTOR the ship was a functional and vital part of the game and it gives that little edge to it.

"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."

I don't believe there is any official word on it yet.  Here are two things I have heard about it though (take with a grain of salt):

    1.  Not in initial release.

    2.  Devs have actually been talking about it to a select few.

The fact that they haven't even mentioned some sort of space combat/ships leads me to believe that they won't have it in the initial release. What also leads me to believe this is that Bioware never really had you in control of the spaceships in their previous games.

It's really something I'd want them to spend a lot of time on to get right, I'd say they'll release without it and work on it for an expansion like SWG did.

Anything about how people will get from one planet to another? Anything in space?

TN: We have not talked specifically about it, but any good Star Wars game would deliver upon having a compelling space experience. That is our goal.

I don't think its going to be in the initial release. You'd probably just go to a port, buy a ticket, click something, and zone to another planet.

    above quote says otherwise

I still go with what Moirae says. Having a goal of doing something doesn't mean they're going to be able to do it for release. The fact that they "haven't discussed it" leads me to believe it's not a release thing. Bioware [I think] knows better than to just throw something together for the hell of it.

That's just wishful thinking you made up.

    3. Bioware doesn't do space and, as Kotor shows, never has done.

    is more likely

I would be suprised (and pleasantly so) if player ships are included in the initial release or even soon after. SWG didn't have player ships until a later expansion, but they did a pretty good job with it. If they don't do something with player ships at some point in the game I would be suprised (and unpleasantly so).

I remember playing SWG as a rebel jedi pre-NGE and inflitrating the Imperial forces long enough to get one of the sweet Jedi Starfighters, then going back to the Rebel side...good times...long in the past hehe. Space combat was a great part of SWG's content and a welcome reprieve from the other gameplay when yougot tired of the ground based stuff.

In one interview they said they wanted space to be a compelling experience. That is the only quote i have heard from a devs mouth about space.

Bioware has done great RPG's...FPS's...including a decent...but not great(imo) mech style game. I don't think they will have any problem with the "Space" part of TOR...whenever it may be released. Forgive me...I will now list WOW only as an example and not as a comparison. Blizzard had no true MMO experience before WOW....they had RTS with their Star/WarCraft series' and the basic primer of an mmo with all of their products...including Diablo 2....with Battle.net...and we all know how WoW went.  I think Bioware has a very good chance of scoring a hit if not a bullseye with any game they produce..especially this one. These two..of all developers..can be compared admirably though....because ,afaik , these companies have two of the best track records for previously released games..period. Granted ...I haven't studied every game developer....so if there are others please let me know.

I remember that. I fear that means they're setting themselves up for the statement that '...and because we couldn't make it a compelling experience in the time allowed, there's not going to be any".

Besides, there's no compelling reason to put in space flight and combat. If we're all going to buy their product for fifty bucks without space flight anyway there's no reason to make a product with in.

And if they did, how can they charge us another thirty bucks six months after launch for a space expansion?

In KotOR you manned turrets on the Ebon Hawk.

Yes, that's exactly what what I mean. A very poorly designed and executed minigame quite outside the high quality of the rest of the game.

    ummmm no

Rubenfield and Freeman were in charge of JTL while Walton was working on the CURB and Dickinson was focused on Rage of the Wookies. Those last two are at Bioware.  Rubenfield's not working on anything much and Freeman's dead.

There has to be space at launch........ SPACE IS STAR WARS.

Fucking sick of how it wasn't in SWG at launch and then over a year later we got some shitty half arsed attempt at it.
