Upgrading Advice

I am getting ready to upgrade soon and have picked out my parts. I am keeping my same motherboard but I am upgrading the Processor, Video Card and adding more Ram. I will also be going from Vista 32 Bit to Vista 64 Bit till Windows 7 releases. What do you think?

Windows 7 releases in October. That's 5 months from now.  It's your money, but I see the purchase of 64 bit Vista for that short a time period as being a bit wasteful. Especially since you intend to put only 4gb RAM into the new system.

It sounds like he plans to add 4gb, total of 8gb.

But if you plan on upgrading to Win7 you should just download the iso from Microsoft now and burn it then use it till next year for free so you don't have to bother with the Vista 64 step.

Also you can use your Vista 32 key on any copy of Vista 64 so you don't need to buy another copy of Vista regardless.

It looks like a good upgrade though.

Looks like a really nice upgrade!

Just dont forget about your power supply growth.  I dont see it listed, but just make sure you have enough juice for the new CPU and video board.  You're making quite a leap in video boards, if you have a low amp 12v rail you may be in trouble.  The video board calls for a 500w, makes no mention of the amps required which is the important thing.  Depending on the rest of your hardware, get something with no less than 32a on the 12v rail if you dont already.

Yea, I was not going to buy Vista 64 and I will be adding 4GB of Memory for a total of 8GB. Downoading Windows 7 RC now. Here is my power supply.

you might want to consider this CPU if you're going dual core click, it's the first Phenom II X2 CPU and is competitivly priced. And as others have said use Win7 RC until next year or release, but you seem to be doing that anyway. You can save alot of cash and spend it on your system instead!

The new processor you want is an AM3 socket.  Your motherboard only supports AM2+/AM2 so you're going to have a problem when you try to put that new CPU into your old mobo.

Like he said ur mobo doesn't support this processor, go for the Phenom II 940 BE same performance.

An AM3 CPU will work in an AM2+ mobo it just can't use DDR3 while in one. His config is fine, he's using DDR2 with an AM3 CPU in an AM2+ Socket.

edit: Should flash the BIOS before the upgrade though unless you already have the latest version.

True but the link showed me an X2 7750 which is AM2+ anyway, is that the right processor you linked? AM3 can use either DDR2 or 3 but an AM2+ board can only use DDR2.

His current processor is the AM2+ X2 7750, he's upgrading to the AM3 X4 955BE. The mobo is an AM2+ which supports both processors anyway.

Oh okay, I wasn't aware of that.  I always assumed the CPU had to be the same as the motherboard's socket type.

Yep, my board is AM2+ so it can run AM3 CPUs. I will have to upgrade the Bios as I checked DFI's site and found that the new bios is required to run AM3 CPUs.

Yea it caught me off guard too, but AMD has worked really hard to make the AM2/AM2+/AM3 sockets all backward compatible, so you can put an AM3 CPU in an AM2+ socket, and an AM2+ CPU in an AM2 socket, at least provided your mobo manufacturer is responsible enough to update the bios.
