I read about how DDO is going free to play, for better or worse. I'm thinking about trying it out, but if they still have some of the stifling game mechanics mixed in, I'm gonna pass even if it is limitedly free.
-Full point builds
Once the game goes free to play will you still have to start a character and quest a ton to get enough rep to be able to create a full point build? This mechanic was absolutely attrocious to me and I never understood it. I'm not interested in anybody's opinions about how easy or hard it is to get all of the rep required to unlock this feature... just lookin for some answers.
-Is the monthly fee changing for subscribers?
Just curious as to wether or not they are lowering the monthly fee.
I played in DDO's beta and I subscribed on and off. A few things really, REALLY bothered me about the game, and still do:
I hate switching weapons in the middle of a fight. It sucks, it's not fun, it's a lame and cumbersome mechanic. I never once played a table top game where we had to bring tons of different weapons and switch between them mid battle. It was really annoying when there was a big group of enemies attacking you and your party all at once that all required different weapons. They took a cumbersom mechanic like this and then made more cumbersome UI choices to facilitate this, instead of just streamlining the combat and being done with it.
Character building in D&D is complicated enough without adding more aspects and pitfalls to character building. Racial enhancemnets, class enhancements, feats, stat allocation, skills. It always seemed way to easy to end up with a sub par build. For the record, I have always hated, and still do hate munchkin builds with a passion. I've always been partial to the old AD&D days when you saw characters with 1 - 2 classes, 3 or 4 max. Now you have so many craptastic power gaming builds with no concern for character concept. Spalsh a level of this and a level of that and... whatever.
The problem with that whole bag is that if you balance content for pure builds (using the term loosely), the munchkin builds tear right through it. You balance for the munchkins and the pure builds suffer.
The way the dungeons are set up and the way they handle combat is really cool, but the whole game suffers from cumbersome stuff that just shouldn't be there in the first place. I'd love to see a dungeon crawler where party members need to depend on each other and cover each other's back or fail miserably. Sure alot of games have the tank, healer, damage dealer, crowd control gameplay that we've come to love, hate, or except, but I loved the fact that Rogues weren't relegated to situational damage dealers like most games and Wizards utility potential was awesome.
Man, I wish someone would make a decent MMORPG. I'm dyin over here.
Gimme a world to live in like old school SWG. Gimme engrossing dungeons and instances like DDO. Gimme endless charcater customization like City of Heroes. Gimme polish and quality like WoW. Gimme player housing and cities, mounts or vehicles. I don't think it's too much to ask for in an MMORPG.
Instead we get rehashed, worn out garbage.

It's probably important to note that it is NOT going free to play.
It is adding a free to play option.

Not sure what you're talking about with "full point builds" as it's the first time I've ever heard the phrase. Do you mean the Favor Rewards System that allows players to unlock 4 extra points that are completely and entire unrequired to successfuly play the game?
You'll have to wait till DDO: Unlimited goes live to find out what the actual subscription plan will be.
If you don't like switching weapons during a fight then don't. You can stick to using a Club if it's too difficult to swap them.
You never played a campaign where you might have been fighting bugbears with axes and swords to later engage skeletons or some other creature that might have been immune to slashing or non-magical weapons?
Rogues -ARE- situational damage dealers. Their damage is regulated to sneak attacks and backstabbing. They actually do some of the most damage in the game as long as their able to Sneak Attack.
"rehashed and worn out"!?! i wish you were capable of giving examples of how the game system is rehashed but since there's no examples to be given I suppose there's no reason to get my hopes up.
I think you're the person the FREE version is going to appeal to. Did you know there's going to be a single Weapon and a Single spell which will do EVERYTHING any other weapon or spell would do for you? That's right, now players will be able to push their single button and have everything instantly provide the result they want without having to progress or accomplish any goals, but there will be a price for this. Would anyone like to guess what that cost is going to be?
