Sorry if this has been mentioned before. There's an article over at GameSpy that mentions an actual date for the open beta start.

October 14th, which would be this Thursday.
I'm not sure where they picked this date up at and if it has any real basis on reality, but I thought you guys might like to know.
I heard that Blizzard did announce a date for the open beta but then took it down and decided to wait. They sure do like to be sneaky and not say anything concrete until the last minute.

I've seen the 14th mentioned elsewhere, but was also trying to see where GS came up with the 14th.

When it gets here all the waiting will be forgotten.
The folks at Blizzard said they did aanounce that, and that Thursday is unlikely since they haven't started sign ups yet.

Saturday my wife went and pre-ordered my collector edition for me at EBGames and when the clerk looked up my phone number he saw that I also have EQ2 preordered. He asked her which I was going to play first since they would both be in on the 16th of November.
She simply said, "I guess WOW since he is getting the Collectors edition".

I've got a bad feeling about this.
I don't understand why they need sign ups. Its open beta, everyone gets in. the only reason I can think of is that they have to generate enough keys for everyone? the Stress test was a good example of how open should work. Sign up and get key, people download client over course of 2-3 days then boom, everyones in.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just reporting what I read. I dont see why signups and Beta don't begin at the same time.

Why they don't begin at the same time is a completely different question.
In theory they could. but 200k people (maybe a little high) downloading the 2.4gig client at once would cause a server meltdown.
Stupid question. When OB does come out, where can one download it? I hope not FIlepLanet or GameSpy where an account is needed. God. I hate being a n00b.

Only people in North America will be accepted into the OB. That is one reason for the signups. Others include that Blizzard wants to know who their testers are and how to contact them. Also, people have to set up their account and download the client before hand. All can be handled during sign ups. Those are the only reasons I could guess for OB sign ups.
They wont start the OB till the screenshot group contest is over on the 19th but signups might start.

blizzard made an announcement that Thursday is NOT the start of open beta... they had gamespy remove the annoucement since it was wrong... they did said that they will be annoucing a date for the start of open beta in the near future... probably when signups start which i assume will be this week sometime

Actually, all I see is that Thursday is unlikely. Not even impossible, just unlikely.

What I´ve learned is that OB usually lasts either 2 weeks or a month... but, I´m not 100% that all games go with 2 weeks or a month.
..anyway, my bet would be that this one lasts 2 weeks.
I hope so cause I got my game completely up to date still and I'd HATE to redownload the whole bloody thing again. cablemodem or no.
