That's just an insane number of people, and we are playing MMORPG's, not war simulators. This doesn't mean it won't happen in Aion, becuase I have heard of quite a huge number battling in the Abyss on the CH servers. But it just seems like people want this huge ridiculous number to fight battles. I understand people want to see these massive battles, but at what cost? Zerging? Anyways, I could careless about the amount. In DaoC, my guild could easily take out zerg guilds back in the day with less than 50 and hold down towers and keeps. You could have a million people, but what's the use if those million can't follow orders. It's a lot easier to command a small group and get them to listen then to control 150+ people in a huge guild.

you mean  This is Sparta! ?? :D

Since I tend to play later at night I often log into European servers. Just wondering what type of lag I may see.

I think the real test of lag will come when some legitimately large (300+ players) battles are fought.  That's probably not going to happen with this beta event, unfortunately.

Which is unfortunate because, if memory serves me well, we always get worked up about these large "promised" battles in games and then when we get to experience them in the final version of a game, it's almost always a let-down; mainly due to technological issues.

Indeed.  I'm starting to wonder if the overall technology (client, server, internet, etc) just isn't really there yet to make these things happen, at least with anything better than stick figures.

I hope it works better, but for some of the claims, I still have yet to see a video of truly massive battles, of the type I've heard NCSoft people talk about.  I'm not saying Aion can't do it, but I will believe it when I see it.

Well, fear not. Watch does videos and you'll see.

NOTE: We do not know their system specs ( Koreans are well knowing for their low computers )

    Video #1 , Video #2 , Video #3

Thanks for the videos.  They're nice, but they still don't show 300+ characters in a fairly small area - if you pause and count, what looks like a massive number of people is actually about 60-80 characters.

I'm still concerned about truly massive battles and how they'll run.

    Check this out

    www.youtube.com/watch

Much better numbers on that one.  Even taking the fraps into account, it's not exactly the "totally lag-free" massive combat a small few here have been claiming - quite a bit of hitch and staccato actions instead of the inherent smoothness the game has under normal circumstances - but still it isn't too bad.

    Thanks for the vid.

Thing is "totally lag free" is completely subjective, and you should have taken those comments as their own experiences. For me, the game is totally lag free even with 400 people on my screen and frapsing, but then again, I have a high end system.

But the game does support mass PvP without sever hiccups, and that's what we've been claiming, if your computer can handle the graphic load, you will see those massive fights running as smooth as it can be, servers wont crash, they wont slow you down, the only limitation is your hardware and your graphical settings.

I mean, most games are unplayable at anything beyond 60, and Aion doesnt even seem to notice twice that number.

To be just as blunt, Aion is channeled (separate instances a la Age of Conan) to increase performance - Aion uses its own crutch there.  Just like in AoC, trying to find your friend in a different instance of the same zone feels just as stupid.

Secondly, I disagree wth your assessment that it's miles and heaps better than anything else out there.  From the videos I've seen, and the limited amount I've played, many of the superlatives I've seen thrown about are the exaggerations brought on by a new game.  In my opinion, the performance in Aion is pretty good, but is just that - pretty good, and on par with other games.

Aion seems to do a lot of things well, but not the "head and shoulders above" type of thing that some appear to be claiming.  It's also got some shortcomings, and isn't perfect.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

It's channeled for the first 20 levels, which last around 12 hours if you know what you're doing. So it's not "just like AoC", considering devs here were clever enough to understand that PvP+channels is a huge letdown for most of their targeted audience.

You are right, I prefer to fight as a team of 50 or less. However if the PvP goes over 200-300 fighting it out I don't want the server to crash.
