Looking for a different mmo

NickwisniNickwisni Member Posts: 42

Alright I have played a lot of different MMO's out there and I am trying to find something different, not new per say but just new to me in a way. I am more less looking for a game with a good community. There is too many games I have played where the community has people spamming about Chuck Norris, or even spamming links of items. Then it doesn't even go on where people are just constantly cussing and all that good stuff. I want a mature community while ensuring that I have it is an active one also and a game that I can like. So I will include a list of games I played a long with the site's guidelines, which was copied from someone's post I looked at recently.

City of Heroes/Villains - This was a good game, but I did not see a community in this game.

Darkfall Online - Was great the first two weeks or so than I got bored. Too much macroing for me. I was not the type to macro so I was constantly pressing buttons to get my skills higher.

EVE - I tried playing a trial of this, but I got bored extremely fast, probably didn't help that I did not see a single person in the game.

Guild Wars - I really did not like the concept of this game. Running around with a bunch of henchmen and such was not fun. It got boring fast for me.

Lord of the Rings Online - I really liked this game but the only thing that pushed me away from the game was that even though they had a mature community, the guilds I was in were not helpful. Sometimes I like to quest with others so when I was trying to get people to do stuff together, no one was either available or were not answering. Even on that point, they were not even answering simple questions about stuff. So that put me off overall. Also the economy prices were way too high for lower lvls.

Tabula Rasa - I loved the concept of this game, I am honestly very disappointed this game was shut down. From the UI to the tiered classes was just great in my opinon.

Vanguard - I cannot say I have played this recently so I do not know the changed but the last time I played the game I had a huge amount of lag which right away made me stop playing it. This was during one of those free weeks that they did.

Voyage Century Online - Okay ship vs ship combat was fun at first than the grind just ruined it for me. It stopped being fun after a couple weeks.

Warhammer Online - Felt too much like a cheap knock off of WoW except all pvp based. I played it the first month than stopped.

World of Warcraft - Don't get me wrong, this is a good game, but I played it for far too long. I am out of the game and would like it to stay that way, at least for a bit longer. I liked the raiding, questing, and well some of the people in the game. What ruined it for me was the nerfing of the game.

Zero Online - I found this as an interesting game with probably would of been a great concept, but the graphics, item mall, and getting ganked early on ruined it for me.

Guidelines

PvP - Territorial, guild vs guild, arena, battleground, open player killing, full loot, partial loot, faction, flagged only player killing, sieges, or duels: I would prefer a game that if it is going to have PVP to have it in battlegrounds or in certain territories. If it is not on there than I would prefer something like flagged type.

Solo or group oriented: I tend to do both, I like to be able to raid and at the same time do my own solo stuff.

Graphic style - Cartoon, anime, or realistic: Graphics can be realistic or cartoon, sad I am skipping anime but I don't like korean made games. Realistic graphics would be better than cartoon. The graphics of the game but me at WoW lvl or higher. I have seen plenty of games out there that have graphics that are way out dated.

View - 2D, 2.5D, or 3D: 3D

Leveling preference - Quest, PvP, or mob grind: Leveling must be by questing. I hate grinding by mobs.

Free to play (F2P) or pay to play (P2P) : I hate F2P but will deal with it depending on the game.

World - Open, mostly instanced, or balanced between the two: Balance between them in a way. I like to be able to free roam where ever I want to go with minimal loading times. If it is instanced than I would assume it be a dungeon or raid.

Controls - Point and click, WASD, or arrow keys: WASD to move and I have a habit of clicking the bar for spells and such with my mouse.

Theme - Fantasy, sci-fi, historical, real life, horror, or super-hero: Any, I do not want any that are either pure space, or water. Ship based games of both types do not really interest me. I prefer something more along the lines of fantasy and sci fi or super hero.

MMO Type - Role playing game, first person shooter, fighting, strategy, racing, social, dancing, or sports: Roleplaying or FPS, I would prefer a roleplaying game over an FPS though.

Game Difficulty: Does not matter.

In depth character customizations - Skill and/or appearance: The appearance does not customization does not matter, but the skill does. I want something that has a deep customization for character development when it comes to skills/abilities.

Now to hopefully help out in narrowing it down, here is what I count most important out of all this.

1. A good community is a must.

2. Graphics quality of being at least more modern graphics is important.

3. Deep character customization when it comes to skills.

4. Must have a free trial of the game since I do not purchase by word of mouth.

Also pvp is not a must in a game for me, it is actually something I can do without but if it is in the game I want it along those guidelines I put in.

Could you be more specific? No really, I'm serious. Your guidlines are so varied that they cover just about every MMO in existance. Think about what ONE thing in each of those areas interest you most right now and then try to find a game based on that.

  • NickwisniNickwisni Member Posts: 42

To be honest, I do not know how I could be more specific. I gave out exactly what I am looking for. I even gave off games I previously played. I gave off what I want most right at the top. A good community.

I know you were very speicifc about what you are looking for, but most games only have a fraction of the things you listed so if you could pick, let's say, 5 things in your guidlines that *must* be present in the game, then we could get a list and start from there.

    For example, PVP. You said:

PvP - Territorial, guild vs guild, arena, battleground, open player killing, full loot, partial loot, faction, flagged only player killing, sieges, or duels.

OK, so you will not find all of those things in one game, so which TWO above are most important? That would help a lot. Do the same for Graphic style, Leveling, World, Controls, etc.

It would help to see a list of 5 of the most important things from all the categories. It will be much easier to come up with a list of games that "fit". Otherwise, you are just going to get a bunch of people giving you the name of their favorite game, which won't really help you.

All you basically said was "I like everything". Thats why you aren't specific.

I'm going to be honest. Look over the game list on this site and try every game there cause you listed way too much to the point where it would be stupid to try to pick a single game out based on the information you gave. Infact I think no game has all of that. All this thread is gonna turn into is people shoving their favorite mmo down your throat because you weren't specific enough.

I added to the PVP spot and gave a comment on the graphics. Is that better or should I add more to make it more specfic than that.

I think what cfurlin is trying to tell you is that you should think hard about what you really love (or think is the most fun) not what you like in general. Then, you should be able to limit each of those down to one or two specific points. Don't add more, but take away specifically from the pvp, theme, mmo type. View and graphic style you should just put "doesn't matter" unless you like pretty looking graphics in which case you can add "Has to have good graphics".

OK, I'm going to make some value judgements based on what you said and what I *think* are most important in your mind.

So here's goes. I hope this helps ;-)

Dark Age of Camelot. Population is low right now, but they are consolidating servers next month and that will provide a better game experience.

Requiem. Nice game. F2P with sub for faster experience/leveling. Horror based with sci-fi elements. Really good model for PvP - somewhere in between Darkfall and more controlled PvP models.

Chronicles of Spellborn. Good game...a little goofy looking IMO. I never PvP'd in the game but friends tell me its fun.

Everquest 2 is strong in every department that you are looking for minus the pvp.

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

I hope the changes I made to my original post can help narrow it down.

You've tried most of the good P2P games.  A few others you could try are Age of Conan (great for the first 40 or so levels) or Everquest II.  If you are willing to try a F2P you could try Atlantica Online (the best right now) or Runes of Magic.  Both games the item mall really isn't necessary unlike other F2P - at least not till the end game which will take a significant time investment to reach.

One suggestion I'd make is not to use the blue text.  Against the gray/black background it's really difficult to read and I have to strain my eyes.  Yellow, green, white, red, etc.  are all easy to read against the normal background.

Honestly, I'm having a very hard time thinking of a recommendation for you. It seems you have been through most of the AAA MMOs and a lot of the AA ones too.

Honestly, reading your comments about what you want in a game, I was immediately thinking about Lord of the Rings Online. The one thing it doesn't do extremely well is PVP, but it's passable for a quick PvP fix. From your explanation, it seemed like your only complaint was the guilds you were in? I would definitely give it another try... like you said, it has a very mature community and the guilds I was always a part of were very helpful. Of all the MMOs I've played (hint: too many), LOTRO has had the best community I have ever been a part of. I didn't notice any auction house problems, but it may have just been your server. I used to play on Brandywine, supposedly the most populated server, so your experiences may have been a lot more different.

I've recently started playing Vanguard again very casually due to the fact that all previous subscribers were given a free month (from like 5/30 to 6/30). If you have subbed to Vanguard before, I definitely recommend installing it and trying it out again to see if it plays any better on your PC. I've noticed huge improvements from what I saw in Beta and the first month after launch. The game runs very well on my PC, but it should be noted that even the best PCs sometimes have problems with Vanguard. While it is technically demanding, it is also poorly coded and unoptimized in some cases. However, from my limited amount of playing time, I've noticed the community is very helpful (albeit pretty small nowadays). The major draw for me has always been the core game mechanics - you can play it solo, but it's most rewarding in groups.

The last game I can think of, because I didn't see it on your list, was Age of Conan. Honestly, it's not the best game, but the PvP can be fun at times, it has an interesting way of doing combat, and the graphics are really good. The community is hit or miss... on one of the server I played on it was terrible (FFA PvP), and on the other (PvE) it was very mature and friendly.

Despite these recommendations I've just given you, here's what I truly suggest: Take a break from MMOs. You've played most of them and have had problems with them. The MMO is a very stagnant (release wise) genre, so there will not be a lot of new games coming any time soon. The biggest releases to look forward to are probably Aion, FFXIV, and Old Republic, all of which are not coming out for a while (Aion this year? the other two I know are in 2010). Take a break and come back after some major content patches in some of your favorite games, or when another game comes out.

Edit: I also noticed you have not played Everquest 2... that is a decent game to try (certainly worth the free trial). It has great PVE, but is sorely lacking in the PvP department. I did not enjoy it as much as Vanguard, but it is definitely a good mix between original Everquest and World of Warcraft. The community is very good, but in my experience the combat was dull and the community seems to be hardset on their "ideal group" that they don't like to stray from, leading to some boring combat mechanics. Despite this, I'd definitely recommending trying it out, although my above recommendations certainly still stand.

I haven't played a MMO for two months or more so you could put it this way, I am having a MMO craving. I have considered going back to LOTRO. Also I did the trial for Everquest 2, I can't remember if I liked it or not.

I'd give city of heroes another go due to the expansion

Haha... completely understandable. In that case, I suggest trying the Everquest 2 trial one more time, and if you don't like that, try LOTRO once again. Both of these games come the closest to meeting what you want, although I'm not sure you will be 100% satisfied. Try some other free trials for games listed here, and let us know which ones you liked / didn't like, and may we can help you further (unless you find one!).

I will be going to recommend Ryzom and comment your likes/dislikes. Ryzom is an almost unknown diamond among the MMO's that did not get influenced too much from the heavy WoW hype. As an experienced MMO player you will soon notice that many little things are a little different on Atys (the planet Ryzom plays on).
In Ryzom the beginning concept was a more or less open Guild vs Guild one but it turned out to be more a war of the 2 main factions. Guilds build outposts and devlare war on other guilds, once war is declared the defending side has time to prepare defence and gather allies. If you want to stay out of pvp you can too.
Solo or group oriented: I tend to do both, I like to be able to raid and at the same time do my own solo stuff.
Ryzom has a lot to do for the dedicated solo player but is better played in small teams or duos. Even harvesting can be done in a duo.
Ryzom is not a modern Direct X 10 game - Lord of the rings online landscape graphics and model details are much better. But run in full settings it does actually look nice, i love the sand and thunderstorms and the planet Atys actually has seasons and guess what, the trees and other textures change with the seassons.
    View - 2D, 2.5D, or 3D: 3D
    Of course Ryzom is 3D.
Leveling preference - Quest, PvP, or mob grind: Leveling must be by questing. I hate grinding by mobs.
Okay here comes a big question mark for my recommendation. Ryzom has quests in the starting area but the game changes and you do faction and skill grinds + harvesting + pvp preparation for your guild, you help building guild outpsosts and so on. It is not a quest grind like Lord of teh rings online tho.
Free to play (F2P) or pay to play (P2P) : I hate F2P but will deal with it depending on the game.
Ryzom is p2p but cheaper than the average.
World - Open, mostly instanced, or balanced between the two: Balance between them in a way. I like to be able to free roam where ever I want to go with minimal loading times. If it is instanced than I would assume it be a dungeon or raid.
Ryzom is usually open but with Ryzom rings players can create their own scenario instances for roleplaying and fun. There is no loot or exp though in those but it is intresting to have a level editor in an MMO.
Controls - Point and click, WASD, or arrow keys: WASD to move and I have a habit of clicking the bar for spells and such with my mouse.
Ryzom is pretty much what you described and of course like most MMO's fully custamisable if you want a certain key do something else. (maybe i should mention that you do not jump in Ryzom, no everjumping people here)
Theme - Fantasy, sci-fi, historical, real life, horror, or super-hero: Any, I do not want any that are either pure space, or water. Ship based games of both types do not really interest me. I prefer something more along the lines of fantasy and sci fi or super hero.
Ryzom is a fantasy game on a different planet - it allows the developers to do things that you cant do in the ordinary Elf Darf setting. But its not a pirates game or pure space game. So it should meet your demands.
MMO Type - Role playing game, first person shooter, fighting, strategy, racing, social, dancing, or sports: Roleplaying or FPS, I would prefer a roleplaying game over an FPS though.
    Ryzom is an RPG.
    Game Difficulty: Does not matter.
Really? good, because Ryzom is more challenging than other games and it does not forgive mistakes. Mistake = you die, you get a penalty for dying. Therefor it feels alot more rewarding and you care for your toon and if it lives or dies alot more. (At least i do hehe)
In depth character customizations - Skill and/or appearance: The appearance does not customization does not matter, but the skill does. I want something that has a deep customization for character development when it comes to skills/abilities.
I hope you mean what you said because i do not like 2 of the 4 races in Ryzom, they look stupid in my opinion. If you were sensitive in that matter Ryzom might not be for you. The skill system of Ryzom is OUTSTANDING. One of the best i have seen to date. You are not class bound in Ryzom, similar to eve you learn what you want and you specialise what you want.
Now to hopefully help out in narrowing it down, here is what I count most important out of all this.
    1. A good community is a must.
The Ryzom community is friendly and helpful, and easy to contact -> go to Universe chat and have fun.
    2. Graphics quality of being at least more modern graphics is important.
As mentioned before Ryzom does not have Direct X 10 but i like the graphics. See for yourself, make sure you have the screen ration correct. (put it on auto if unsure)
    3. Deep character customization when it comes to skills.
    Yes. Yes and another YES!
    4. Must have a free trial of the game since I do not purchase by word of mouth.
3 weeks fully functional free trial (no limits in levels, area to move to or anything, you get what you see)
Also pvp is not a must in a game for me, it is actually something I can do without but if it is in the game I want it along those guidelines I put in.

Alright, i have put alot of time thinking if Ryzom may be good for you or not. There is this question mark hovering about you liking quest grinds like WoW or LOTRO. This may be the killer for Ryzom for you. As a sentence of warning: Yes Ryzom can be played as a brainless grind - just like you can (if you want) play LOTRO as a brainless grind too. There are alternatives though, in Lotro it is questing and chatting with your guild. In Ryzom it is RPing, helping your guild with the outposts and enjoying the open feel of the game. Fiddle around with stanzas (thats the puzzle pieces you can create your own spells and abilities with)

Would love to read if you are going to try it and if you like it or not.

the only 2 things not directly fitting your demands are:

    - Graphics not ultra modern,

    - not a quest grind.

    Cya on Atys!
