Yves Guillemot, viz. the boss of Ubisoft, has stated that game development costs are going to double in future years. The reason he mentions for this is that the CGI in games will be tried to be developed into level of movies. Also the ideology behind this is great. He mentions that:
"They play for hours, so they don't want to get up and down. They don’t want to be tired after five minutes. These games are about reactivity."
Thus gaming industry is finally opening its eyes to that they can keep feeding people mindless and boring grind where 2year goals are the targets (dont want this to be removed neither however) but to make the games entertain-ment.
Movies, tv-series, animes and the rest would not succeed in entertainment business if their prducts dont entertain. TV-series die if they go into mindless repetition and bad scripts for instance. About time Games do the same.

Ps. Ubisoft isnt quite in MMO business but since this relates to MMO's through game-industry I thought I start a discussion.

thats based purely on one side of development. What about all those useful tools that are being created that are cutting down on development time, reducing the need for multiple software and reducing the need for so many staff. I'd say hes got the wrong idea on the cost of MMO's. The only thing that will hurt the industry is if investors are scared off. Everything else is constantly being improved.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
well we will find out in the next 10 years Our economic crisis is being driven with games like wow pulling 5 bucks a month from 8 million people And no im not doing the math So you gotta think about it
You forgot to mention that in Canada, Ubisoft is able to write off as much as 50% of their labour costs (atleast in Quebec). They are also receiving very generous incentives from different Provinces to open studios.
Who cares about CGI cinematics? Yeah they can compliment a game but gameplay should come first. I don't think games need to go into the depth of 'film making' Cinematics don't have to look rediculously amazing to tell a great story.
Slightly off topic but games these days seem to spend far too much time focusing on making things 'look great' rather than 'play great'.
/end mini rant
