I'm quite surprised nobody has brought this up yet; so here we go. What role do you think Cid will appear as for FFXIV! Below are the many roles he has appeared as over the course of the FF Series.
Cid ~ is a character who appears, or is at least mentioned, in all Final Fantasy installments since Final Fantasy II. Although he is rarely the same age, and never the same individual in each of the main series, he is usually presented as an owner, creator, and/or pilot of airships and provides transportation to the main characters and their party members at various points of the game.
- Final Fantasy ~ never made an appearance.
- Final Fantasy II ~ Cid is a non-playable character and freelance airship pilot.
- Final Fantasy III ~ Cid Haze, a non-playable character.
- Final Fantasy IV ~ Cid Pollendina, engineer and the first playable Cid.
- Final Fantasy V ~ Cid Previa is a non-playable character and elderly inventor.
- Final Fantasy VI ~ Cid del Norte Marguez is a non-player character who is a researcher.
- Final Fantasy VII ~ Cid Highwind is a spear-wielding main character and an airship pilot.
- Final Fantasy VIII ~ Cid Kramer is a non-playable character and a headmaster.
- Final Fantasy IX ~ Cid Fabool is the ruler of Lindblum and is playable.
- Final Fantasy X & X-2 ~ Cid is the leader of the Al Bhed tribe.
- Final Fantasy XI ~ Cid is the chief engineer of Bastok.
- Final fantasy XII ~ Al-Cid Margrace, who is the heir of Rozarria and friend of Larsa. Doctor Cidolfus Demen Bunansa is a non-playable character as an enemy boss. {Notable for being both the first FF with more than one Cid, and the first in which Cid is a villain.}
- Final Fantasy XIII ~ Unknown
- Final Fantasy XIV ~ Unknown
So let the speculation and guessing begin!!! I'm going for that he'll either be a ruler of the land of Eorzea or one of the gods...hehe!

Yeah, dude, all that information is well and great, but it's way too obvious to real FF fans. I mean, I know I don't need to visit the Wiki page to know what roles Cid has played in the past.
Yeah its called for quick reference, not everyone that visits these forums has played all the FF's, let alone know who cid is/has been! Most didn't start until FFVII or FFX, just like most MMO players started with WoW!
I foresee that Cid will be...
an...
ENGINEER!
Just a note: the Dwarf is give the TNT to in FF1 is a Cid-like character ... I think his name is Karrick or something along those line. Not Cid, but kinda close
Personally I think Cidolfus is the true Cid of FF12 ... just because he fits the mold of Cid better than come non-imporant playboy prince like the other one. We are really do for another playable Cid, but with how the naming conventions of the playable characters in FF13 is playing out I doubt he'd be there and in an MMO you won't see a playable one. He'd be some science related guy reguardless. I'm thinking maybe in 13 a guy who was involved in that train system that is on the enemy side, but is really a friend. In 14 probably something to do with airships again. I guess Final Fantasy 15 we need a playable Cid.
Come to think of it ... we need another Highwind too. One in 2, one in 4 and one in 7 ... then nothing that I can remember ... although for canon sake I'd think there was one in 9 (just can't remember)
I hope he will be the head of a crafting school and will be a professor for learning a craft, or even a head of a crafting association. I hope they make crafting fun and with a great deal of depth and use Cid as a key NPC in the process.
he designed those flying telephone pole airships from the video!
Hmm... Well they've said that weapons are going to play a bigger role in character advancement.... so i'm going to guess that Cid will be the NPC responsible for upgrading weapons!
heh if that's the case more like the head of the organization that upgrades the weapons. Lol it would be funny though to see if he is the only NPC that does it and be swarmed by thousands of players. He would at long last recieve the celebrity treatment he deserves.
Cid has to be around technology in some way shape or form. He is either deep rooted in science or airships. If he isn't he isn't Cid.
Nah, the only airships in IX were the Hilda Garde (Cid's airship), and The Invincible (Garland's airship, although I guess it's more of a spaceship than it is an airship, since he uses when going from one planet (Terra) to another (Gaia)). There was also the Blue Narciss, but it started off as a normal water-sailing ship, and was later reconstructed by Cid in to the Hilda Garde III.
EDIT: Actually, nvm. I forgot that Cid does become a playable character on Kuja's airship (Hilda Garde I). early mornings

Also, to the OP of the thread, Cid was never playable is IX.
Highwind isn't an airship ... it is the surname of the Dragoon characters. Kain Highwind from FFIV is THE dragoon, Cid Highwind from FFVII is a dragoon ... Freya's surname should be highwind (it isn't, but should be) ... but I tend to think there is some NPC floating around some city that name is Highwind.

Actually, the Highwind was the name of the airship in VII. I thought that was what you were referring to in your original post.
But seeing as how it is also the surname of a few Dragoon-type characters in previous FF installements, you're probably right. Freya's surname should have probably been Highwind, as it would of been a perfect tribute to past Dragoon-type characters.
yeah i thought about that after i typed it ... the airship in 7 is called the highwind (cop out name if you ask me ... should have named it something original like the Enterprise >.>)
(ED NOTE: The Enterprise is of course first an actually naval ship, second the original spaceship from Star Trek (others were added), and third was the name of Cid's original airship in FFIV which was later replaced by the lava resistance Falcon and the intersteller Big Whale)
The first person to roll a character with the name "Cid" will be gifted an airship and be immortalized in the game whether they continue to play or not. Only one Cid can ever be created.
