Everquest popped my online cherry - as much as I hate that game now - it still provided me with 3 yrs or so of unhealthy entertainment, Bring on WoW, EQ2 and Guild Wars! (One of em has ta be good right?).
I use to play a MUD when i was like 6 years old called the Enternal forest it was fun heheh hten i got hooked on anarchy online which i played till SWG came out and now im hooked on SWG:JTL beta heheh
Ultima Online was the first for me. I played it pre trammel days where it took forever to get skills up and there were pks roaming around. Played it for a good four years before age of shadows came out and then i quit cuz they completely messed up the game big time. they totaly revamped it and it felt like a whole new game.

Ultima online just came out with a BADASS lookin expansion but, I looked at the graphics... Holy Freakin cow, it's still all 2d!!!!! Yeah, 2D???!!!!! Geez, what's going on here?!?! Is this game still popular? If so, is it just a 3rd world country kinda popular or do regular folks that make money and can afford decent computers play it too? I'm in shock.. UO Go away and come back with UO 2.. How dare they release something as awesome as a samurai expansion on that old ass hunk o' junk...
Gemstone III (now Gemstone IV). Even though it's more of a text MUD, I still classify it as a MMORPG because it has, I think, around 2000 members. only about 900 - 1000 of which are on at the same time. I first played it back in either 1998 or 1999. Was awesome. Best game I had ever played up until that point, and it was a text game. When my brother first introduced me to it, I thought the game would be stupid because of its lack of graphics. Turns out, I played it off and on for 5 years. There's so much to learn about the game and game mechanics. There's crafting, hunting, gambling, adventuring, quests (that are immersive quests and require you to think). Last time I played with my level 15 halfling wizard, I crossed poisonous swamps through swarms of vipers to an elven town in which I was told to seek my destiny in the city beneath the elven catacombs. I had to go to a temple-like area and experiment around with everything until I found some stones that I arranged and rearranged for half an hour or more until I found a combination that dropped the floor beneath me and I found myself in the city. I ended up joining the secret city and performing tasks (not necessarily quests) that gave me special abilities I could use for my benefit.

Actually, I played Ultima Online (shortly) a while back, and it has the option to choose either 2d graphics or 3d graphics. I chose 3d graphics when I played it (naturally), but I prefer 2d graphics because the game just looks much better in 2d graphics (imo).
