More RAM for i7 920?

FaliceFalice Member Posts: 329

So I can add up to 25.6 gigs (says the sticker on my mobo) of ram on my puter, I currently have 6 gigs and I'm running Vista 64. Lets say I decided to swap out the 6 gigs for 18 gigs, would I see a huge leap in performance?

Would it affect gameplay (currently playing NWN2) for some/most games?

My gpu is the 4870 1 gig.

No, the game has to be designed with the amount of ram in mind.

Depending on your setup, the difference between 3 and 6 may not even be noticed.  You'll really gain nothing in gameplay by having more ram.  The only way this would be untrue is if you're running a lot of garbage in the background that is taking up your ram.  A game by itself won't even come close.

Considering your CPU and video card, shouldn't you be running games at Max settings without any issues at all?

Well I guess I just wanted to see if things would run even faster with additional ram, maybe I'm just being greedy...

Maybe I'm remebering old system requirements, but I swear at least 4 gigs of RAM were recommended for running Vista 64. Now with the new RAM structure of 3 gig incraments, some people might be underpowering their pc's. I am a bit out of touch on it. Too busy dealing with irl stuff to have kept up with RAM/mobo architecture as of late, so I might be wrong.

I believe that if the game is 32-bit, it cannot even address more than 2gigs by itself.

If you're really greedy, you should add in a 2nd video card.  If your motherboard won't allow it, upgrading to one that will would be a good move.

6 GB is ideal for an i7 system. If a game is the ONLY thing you have running then 3GB will do fine though you would see a slight performance gain in going to 6 GB. Going above 6GB just doesn't matter cuz your OS doesn't have anything more to load into it, RAM is nothing more than workspace and once you have enough for all your work to be out there at once it doesn't help to have more of it.

More ram doesn't make a computer FASTER, it will only make it smoother. Unless you have tons of apps open all at once or do heavy photoshop work, 6 gig's is perfect for Win7 and gaming.

i always relate ram to load screen speed....faster ram means faster load screens, however more ram doesnt matter past a certain point....i have to have 2 diffrent mmorpgs (like aion and aoc) running at the same time to even hit 4gigs used and i run vista.

in hindsight i should have went 3gigs ddr3 rather than 8 gigs of ddr2....not that it bothers me to wait a few extra seconds on a load screen.

these guys are right, worry about your graphics card over the ram.

What more ram will or won't do.. is directly related to what you are running.

Currently gaming wise adding more than the 6 Gigs you have won't help.

As others mentioned mostly in graphics related software (video editing, cad etc) it can help a LOT with render times.  Yet not even all graphics programs are setup to take advantage of ram past a certain point.

Relative to gaming.. don't bother at the current time.
