I got to tell you all that I am having a ball with AoC after I broke down and subscribed. The Trial version was good but at the time I was into another game and missed the good parts. Furthermore, I missed the launch (perhaps a good thing) yet my experience on the pvprp server has been addictive. At level 35 I have only just started the game.
Crafting has been different than other games I have played and has added to the enjoyment. I am still harvesting (a pre-requisite to crafting) which I have found really neat. Really looking forward to level 40 to see what all I can do with that. The best part of harvesting is during the procedure your attacked and have to defend to finish.
PvP in the realm is…barbaric where I have seen lower levels over power higher levels in strategic sneak attacks. No more “level 25 taking out 3 levels in their teens” this makes for some really fun times or bad depending on where one stands. I have witnessed entire towns erupting into a ffa battle at times where even the guards get into the action. Best back up your words with game or dont talk trash. The only complaint I have regarding PvP is that I experience lag in the mini-games which has prompted me to start this thread. Anyone else get that lag?
The RPG side of AoC reminds me some of GW except that cut scenes are shorter and the player has more room to decide how and when to finish quests. I have grouped up on numerous occasions and found the game enjoyment increase by a factor of 2. I am not racing to level-up my toon but, levels seem to come rather fastly in any case. That or I am just not focusing on “the race to max”.
Finally, I wish the trial version would have granted full use instead of the restrictions that were given during this time. Perhaps I would have subscribed sooner. Nevertheless, the ability (and sometimes the necessity) of combining RPG/PvP or a combination of both has been fun. I do not know how or what went down during launch but the game today certainly has a potential to develop into a top 5 game list. In short, the trial version just does not do justice to the game, even as a teaser.

Thanks for the feedback Seabeast was an interesting read. Have you done Sanctum of the Burning Souls yet?
Also how is performance for you on average and do you run at DX10? A few times I have had a bit of lag in mini games too but I did notice this was around peak times. Also sometimes when having particles set high and also in the Audio tab / setting, the number of 'simultaneous' sounds up high from PvE playing. I tend to turn the simultaneous sounds down a bit which sometimes helps.
Glad to hear that you are having fun.
In regards to the restrictions on trial accounts, I am sure that they were put there to prevent gold sellers from using trial accounts for business because trial accounts are extremely hard to trace.
I would recommend Age of Conan to a friend who hasn't played; this somewhat validates it.
Its okay fun, and probably nice from 1-80.
Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions.
I waited until patch 1.05 to try the Age of Conan free trial. To see get the full benefit of the game.
I will not be subscribing.
Where possible I pick the pet class first, which meant the Demonologist. Well, I quickly find the summoned demon is practically worthless. Its fireball attack have a long cast time, the fireballs do very little damage and its the only thing they do. I could have excused its non-existant DPS if it held aggro but they dont, I dont even think they have a seperate aggro table. So, whats the point of having a pet if your pet does nothing.
Well, I trudge all the way through the Tortage story mode to see how my character progresses. The odd thing I notice is that theres little reason to do the normal quests in Tortage because the single player story mode covers most of the leveling. There was a small spot between 13 and 15 and again between 17 and 19. I guess if you're doing an alt the dozens of normal quests in Tortage will help alleviate repeating quests.
After I leave Tortage and head to the next zone I run into the rest of the game. Questing level 20+ on my Demonologist was either AoE down large groups around my level or struggle to kill a single enemy 3 levels above me.
At level 22 I was ready pack it in but after a bit of research I find I get a new summon at level 25. Well, I soldier through the next few levels just to find its the same useless summon just with a different party buff.
I try a couple other classes to level 6(when you get into Tortage), the melee system is not the innovative revolution is was made out to be and now here we are.
Im sure the AoC fans will decry that I only got level 25 and the real game starts at level ?? but whatever. I tried it and I did not like it.
Lastly, I was disappointed by the graphics. Yeah, the world(if you can run it with everything set as high as it will go) looks great and the female characters are nice but the spell effects(especially fire) are awful and the male characters are inhumanly ugly. Some are a bit realistic(how you would expect a male of the setting would look) but most are just downright ugly with misshapen features. There were a few other minor things here and there but nothing to really to go into detail(except the ground grass, dear God what the hell were they thinking).
I'm sure AoC gets great at the higher levels when you get better gear and run some instances but I really dont want to pay $15 and go through another 25 levels just to find its only marginally better.
I play the demonologist...except i chose that class because i like to play the glass cannon mage..i got what i wanted.
Your attacks are weak because you simply negated adding feat points, or are doing something seriously wrong.
The pet class of this game is the necromancer...and you dont get one pet, you get a pet army.
So congrats on rating the glass cannon mage as a pet class, of course you were dissapointed.
*edit*
you bet your ass you can customize your male character.....ever try to close up view other characters...ever notice that they all look diffrent...as well as body proportions... but if you were observant enough to notice that the pet class was the demonologist not the necro....
Reanimation Necromancer is the Pet class of the game and finally is working properly in 1.05.
Demonolgist has a pet that provides some massive heals that is very hard to kill.
It is almost like running an extra daggamalt at end game.
Best thing to do is to contact some other level 80 Demos in game to give you some help in specing out.
Demo is the most powerful class in the game at the moment and very rewarding.
The Demo AoE power in solo or groups is second to none.
CC Control is also second to none.
I am not runnin dx10 and performace is good, however, the mini-map pvp seems to lag some for me. Not sure what that is about but gona try to lower my specs. So far, I continue to enjoy the game and it is holding my interest with each level.
The Demonologist = glass cannon with a walking buff (if you can ever get close to the Demo). Plays real similiar to glass cannons in most games (for example WoW frost mage) which means you have to learn to kite. Properly played Demos are devasting in pve or pvp.
The Necromancer = pet class with lots of pets that can deal damage as well as stealing life back to you. A Necros pets are capable of soloing most mobs. Closest WoW example would be a Felguard Warlock (ie pets do the heavy lifting). There are lots of necromancer videos out there where the pets are soloing mobs / players.
Necro class is also probably the first and most often needing a rez in group encounters / raids or Sieges in my experience.
Demo's can be a bit squishy too sometimes.
