SOE is a popular whipping post in MMOland, but they're obviously successful nonetheless.
Not really, all their games have very low populations. Everquest / Everquest 2 and Vanguard are dead games.
Everquest + Everquest + Vanguard have maybe 100k players left, spread out over 40 or so servers. That is less than some F2P games.
If you watched Fan Faire a few weeks ago, you would know SoE isn't doing too well. Especially Everquest is doing very bad, there won't be a full epxansion again, only upgrades to the current game, Underfoot will come out in the form of upgraded content.
I believe Everquest and Everquest 2 have less than 50k players each, EQ maybe 20k.

Well, if that is the case, they'll need to do some changes to attract and retain subscriptions or get out of the MMO business. Either way, their bottomline goal is no different than any other company's. It comes down to a question of effectiveness. Treat your customers right and they'll continue to be customers and you'll continue to make money. Treat them wrong and the customers will go away.
Blizzard, et al may have a better finger on the pulse of their playerbase, but make no mistake, they're just as motivated by the money as Sony.

Well there are a lot of people on here who think they ‘beat’ their solo games. That makes them think you can ‘beat’ a MMORPG by getting top level. So the next step in their faulty logic is that you can beat and kill the game itself.
The MMO industry is not like solo player games, hell any kind of online gaming is not even like solo games. Once people have some more life perspective beyond the latest ‘beat them up’ they don’t see things in just that way any more.
