Old school Dragon Warrior! Hell Dragon Warrior 3 already had lots of classes, good grouping, banks, mini games, reclassing and a hero class! The hard work is already done! Easy money, lol... Btw.. I'm not old.. I was just born a long time ago... ...
Ahh.. Dragon Warrior 3.. Great, great game, with good memories. I'd second that.
Also, I'd second:
Suikoden
Legacy of Kain
Hell, Suikoden always has at least 108 characters, it's practically there. And Legacy of Kain, you could have it set in the time of when Moebius is at war with the Vampires.. Although I'm sure with an MMO, I'd be sorely disappointed with the quality of dialog, after the amazing dialog in Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance, particularly. The voice acting is incredible, and the most memorable quote? When Kain and Raziel meet at the pillars in SR2, talking about 2 sides of a coin, when Kain says, "Apparently so.. but suppose you flip a coin enough times.. Suppose one day.. It lands on it's edge.."
Still get chills thinking about that quote in that voice... But for the edification of all, here's a video of that dialog. Watch, and be amazed at what good dialog in a game looks like:
Why would you want to take the rich story and experience of a single player rpg and turn it into a succession of kill/fedex quests and pointless zerg pvp?
A better question would be which mmo would you like to be made into a single player rpg.
Wow i can't believe no one mentioned one of the coolest Genesis games out there:
Shadowrun would make a sweet MMO.
Also see:
Rise of the Argonauts- Greek mythos would be sweet in a mmo with tributes to the gods and all the famous npcs and monsters
Phantasy Star- I mean a REAL MMO, not that pseudo mmo like crap they have put now. It's just something about PS that I love, maybe the mix of sword and tech.
Earthbound/Mother- I'd love to see a mmo based of this series, even if it's just for the thrill of naming my own psionic powers or having your home serves as a hub for questing and exploring and having your "friends' drop by to go explore a new cave they found. Your home could even have npc parents that call your cell phone, give you allowance and cook when you get home. The ideas are endless with this IP.
Front Mission- The ability to play sides with all the political/mercenary/corporate factions would be sweet. And having wanzers based on those factions would keep the ability to customize nearly limitless. Thrown in a fight for a newly found planet as grounds to get all three factions in a heated battle against the planets inhabitants AND each other and you have a epic war spanning 2 planets and 4 warring factions.....drool.
Wow what are these gaming companies thinkin! They have goldmines on their hands!
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Seriously, I think mmo developers need to stop thinking of RPGs when they design their games. Staying true to an RPG is what's hurting the genre at this point. They need to think outside the box and really start to utilize the amount of players on the server and stop trying to create an engrossing single player RPG experience because it usually fails.
With that said, I think a game like GTA has some serious potential (see APB). Also, maybe a game like Left 4 Dead or even a serious war game like Call of Duty might be good candidates.
When I think of an RPG, I think of a game that I usually want to play by myself and get deep into the story. No mmo I have ever played has done that for me.
I'm normally not a fan of class-based MMOs, but Wizardry has an open enough lore to work with. Cool races like the Umpani, T'Rang, Trynnie/Rattkin (or dare we.... Helazoid?). An established spell system, oldschool item system, and an entire section of a planet to build out from.

Any single player rpg ever made for all I care. As long as it has PVP, a reason to PVP, and no ending.
Though I have always thought that Hardwar would make an amazing mmo. :P

I've always thought Diablo would of been a better mmo then warcraft...
Played: DAoC 6 years, WoW 2 years, Ultima/EQ 1+ years, AoC/Aion/Rift/SWTOR a few months Tried: Warhammer, EQ2, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Runes of Magic and many, many others... Currently Playing: DAOC
I'd pick Civ4 and Age of Wonders, even though they are Turn Based Strategy and not RPG. I think they would make fantastic MMOs. If I had to choose a RPG, I would go with GTA or Fallout3.
For the guy who said The Witcher, at first I thought it might be cool, but then, wouldn't everyone be Witchers? hehe
For those people saying Diablo, I have to say World of Warcraft is alot more similar to Diablo than Warcraft.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Not that I think it will happen anytime in the near future, but I think it would be awesome if they turned a 2D or 3D platformer into a sort of playground MMO. Not your traditional life-drainer, but more of a drop-in quick play style thing.
I'm thinking :
Prince of Persia - Following the plot of the new game, maybe have two warring factions. Won't comment further on the offchance it spoils story for someone waiting for the game to hit the ~$10 retail throwaway bin. Obviously everyone wouldn't be the Prince, Elika, Farah or any character of past or present story significance. I'm thinking either a guild of thieves or a resisting city vs. ____ Perhaps the game would have an emphasis on user-generated content with player-created dungeons filled with traps, treasure, etc. Think CoH/CoV mission architect.
Mirror's Edge - Cops and Runners. Ghost tag. Lotsa possibilities. More of an FPS than adventure game.
There are action heavy MMOs, both P2P and F2P, but I don't know of any that involve platforming or traversing obstacles other than the occassional mounted-fence leap done for dramatic effect/shits n' giggles. Maybe Dragonica Online♠ will humor me with some obstacles to get around when THQ/ICE releases it.
And I second Icewind Dale. Not sure about NWN, the sequel was so bug-ridden, I don't trust them to maintain something MMO sized, heh.
Genesis version of Shadowrun as a few have said already.........combination of magic, guns and technology (network concepts particularly) way ahead of it's time cool mixture i haven't seen replicated since.

Definitely Suikoden.
Mmm Xenogears would be sick too..

DEUS EX!
7th saga
Mechwarrior/Battletech? Seems like a universe that is MMO ready (crafting, mercenary work, different factions, etc.)
for rpg : eye of the beholder
for non rpg : elite
i think there may be one already in development
My top 5 would be:
Mass Effect
Neverwinter Nights
Oblivion/Morrowind
Fallout
Planescape (oldie but goodie)

Dragon Quest
I fully support Mass Effect and The Elderscrolls MMOs, but I wish to suggest a new contender which I think could be original:
Something based on Castle Crashers could be tons of fun if you expand it with larger environments, get a gear system going, etc.
Old SNES/Genesis Shadowrun.
Mass Effect
Oblivion
Freelancer
Deus Ex

Just a few ip's that might be able to be spun into a world ala Warcraft.
