Just reguarding this part of your post, I used to think that too.. then I tried out Age of Conan recently.
I felt the "immersion" quality of the game (its Third person) was very high quality, I felt very into it. I never played AoC before about a week ago, and yes I got to level 30 so far, still feel pretty immersed.. I think its just the way the game feels.
Never really have this experience with a 3rd person view game before but hey that just proves (to me at least) that is is possible.
Just my three cents.
I understand what you mean, but what I meant by what you quoted is more related to the actual gameplay, maybe some features just wont work in 3PV, again just speculating , maybe the landscapes and buildings were designed with FPV in mind with a 3PV could break immersion.
