Miss Star Wars Galaxies?

PokeihlPokeihl Member Posts: 8

Does anyone else miss the way Star Wars Galaxies used to be, the skill based system that would allow you to be any kind of character you want to, instead of the lousy way it is now where you can just pick something and grind away like any other MMO?

I remember when you used to see a Jedi in that game and you would be like holy bajesus, that guy/girl would rape my face and they must be some sort of god. And now it's like, oh look, I can pick a Jedi from the start.

Lousy retardedness. I guess my rant was just wondering if there will ever be another good game like the old Star Wars, so if there will be, help me out and list them.

Thanks for your time.

    Play Darkfall, wait for SWTOR.

Darkfall lowest rated, great game in MMO history.

NA server comes out july 13th.  Last chance to start fresh on a brand new server, with a truly massive game.

Yes I do miss it dearly.

I played DFO . . . got bored with it . . . or maybe burned out, as I played beta as well.

I am waiting on MO . . . maybe EMU's will be in play in a decade or so.

Star Wars TOR is going to be like that? Woooooo they got intelligent!

And Darkfall is one I've been looking at but I suppose I'll have to try it soon enough now.

There were many reasons why I liked SWG.   One was the way the skill system worked, I was always leveling SOMETHING, and that was a great incentive to play just a little bit longer, and a little bit longer, and a little bit longer...

Also the ability to mix and match and try new skills.  It wasn't always about creating the best combat toon you could, although at a certain point I did that.  It was also about creating a fun toon, a jack of all trades that allowed you to do the things you liked to do.  And even if you didn't have enough points to master it was still fun to mix and match because some of the low level skills were pretty cool.

I definitely miss it, but there were some serious flaws in the game that should have been addressed, but didn't necessitate throwing out the baby with the bath water.

hah, That's what I was thinking the thread was about :P.

But to answer the question, yes. Completely miss the game that was. I can't speak much to the current state of the game though. I tried it, wasn't for me. Earthrise and MO both look like prmising successors, but really, if EvE ever implements Ambulation it would be close enough for me as I throughly enjoy that game with just hte ships.

I'mma try Eve now, cause supposedly that game is ridiculous, as most people say.

But I do agree, Star Wars had quite a few flaws, but still the general idea is what I want back, the new idea just changed it to another class based MMO.

  • PokeihlPokeihl Member Posts: 8

And any idea on when MO is coming out? Cause if it's as good as it looks when it comes out I think I may just make some love stains in my jeans.

MO is supposed to be out later this year (Q3 or Q4).

EVE was a big MEH for me.  I did not even finish my 14 day trial.

Be sure to visit the 21-day trial thread in the eve forums. Otherwise, you can get the generic 14-day trial off the eve website. But hey, if you can get another free week, why not right?

The current SWG offers very little that I really like.  There are a few people left in that game that I know, and of course I have all of my 'stuff' to look at in that game... but really, the game is nothing like it used to be (in all the wrong ways).

I gave SWG another shot about a month ago.  I went back for a total of about 10-12 hours... and I just didn't like what it had become.  Barren servers.  Guilds that were no more, new ones made up of people I didn't know.

The long and short of SWG for me... is why would I invest time playing a game that 1) I don't like anymore and 2) is dying (has been dying for years)?

SOE does their best to say that they have players coming back all of the time.  And maybe they do.  But I imagine that for every 1 that stays, there are 9 that don't (like myself).

I know players that pay a 1 month re-up just to make sure ther houses and stuff are taken care of.  They are praying that SOE wakes up and unf*cks their game.... a dream many of us have had for 'ages'.  It's a lost, very lost cause.

I do miss SWG.  I miss my friends and the old system.

I used to say that I'd go back if SOE ever launched a preCU/preNGE server.  Too much of what made that game fun is gone... and that was the community.  Aside from the pieces of the game that I liked, the community (and my friends) made the game fun.  They are long gone and will never return, and I don't think I will either... even if there was a roll-back or preCU/preNGE server.

Blackwatch, that's why you and me are here. The Old Star Wars was just so, I dunno, it made for excitement. You could have one character that was good at everything, or one character that had a few things that would just wail on everything else.

    DAMN YOU SOE.

  • StellosStellos Member UncommonPosts: 1,491

Of course I miss it.  But as far as games available well there isn't much.  EVE if you are into the Sci-Fi, ship genre.  Darkfall has looked pretty pathetic to me, but has great concepts.  Not really much I can recommend, sorry.  Possibly Mortal Online if it delivers.

I miss the community, the comraderie of warriors, the skilled crafters, the engaging entertainers, etc.

I do not miss the BS from SOE - the broken game, the never truly fixed bugs, the endless exploits, the complete and total lack of continuity of lore.

I think this sums up the experience of those people who have used their vet trials and not re-subbed. I know, for me, it was a bit depressing going to the guild cities I once resided in or visited often, but that were now skeletons of their former glory (if they existed at all anymore). Checking the waypoints I had for vendors that no longer ran a business. Then, finally, opening up the friends list each time I logged in and seeing noone on...Even if the game were magically fun, there is a certain bias created by all the fond memories that were cut short.

Naturally, it was only a game, but it was a really fun game that knew how to facilitate solcialization in an MMO.

We should all complain or something and get SOE to turn Star Wars back to the old game we used to love.

you do understand that swg and swtor are in different time periods right? you understand that in galaxies jedi were extinct and that in the old republic they exist in the thousands, right?

Well I know that whole witchery about time periods I just want it back to being something you have to earn, being a jedi is a massively important thing like it used to be in SWG.

its not witchery, its about bioware wanting the game to be in a period when they have enough artistic freedom to tell a story without interfering with existing canon. and why should jedi be something you have to earn?

i dont have anything against swg at all, but regarding this jedi starting class business, alot of people are being too unreasonable. its a different game, in a different time period. jedi were hard to unlock in swg because of the time period, which is the same reason they are available from the start in swtor.
