TOR is a Bioware game turned MMO. If you want the old days back you will just not like it.

If on the other hand you loved NWN and played it online you will most likely love TOR but the game have nothing in common with games like UO, Meridian or EQ.

If it is as they claim, where each class has their own storyline equalling that of a moderately long singleplayer game, I'll be more than happy to drop $50 on it. In fact, I'd probably pay $50 for each story line if I had to.

Too bad FF14 is doing the same thing, but they'll do it better...

so it's better to start that instead if you're not SW fanboy/FF/JRPG/SE hater.

If they actually have viable solo play I'll consider it. I liked the story stuff I saw in FFXI but the lack of being able to solo without it being a huge headache killed the whole game for me.

Rather than point out ways of which this is kind of ignorant. Ill just say, theres plenty of classes that solo well. that is all.

Given missions are largly unsoloable, but if you read the instruction manual it pretty much tells you throughout it, that companions are needed.

*edit for ontopicness* I would rather not join in on the hype, for the larger the building of hype you build, the more debris that will hit the ground when it falls. (not saying its going to fail fanboys, just that when your rediculously high expectations are floored, your previous hype is going to cause you to hate everything they DIDNT deliver on at release. tl;dr just enjoy the damn game ffs.)

I'm aware that it IS possible to solo, hence, I didn't say it was impossible, It is just a headache, like I said. The game is very unforgiving in the aspect of accidental pulls/adds, since things chase you virtually halfway across the zone. It's not really even worth it to run if something caught you by surprise and is already attacking you since it will beat you to death as you run. Maybe it has changed since I played? I don't know, but that was my experience soloing in FFXI.

Things will be different this time around, no worries.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

everything we've ever wanted? hell no, i can think of an idea of a game that would blow your minds just off the top of my head that i would create and im absolutely sure that this will not have it. but TOR will be a great game.

    they can still play

    They said that .. NICE!

Also, they've said they really aren't trying to create a virtual world, which is a minus from my point of view.

Still could be fun to play for a bit though.....

Good. They can focus on making it a good game and without any preconceived notion of what a MMO should be.

Anyone else think, or at least hope Star Wars: TOR will break that mold?

The OP asks if TOR will 'bring back the good old days' then hopes TOR will 'break the mold'?    These are contradictions.  MMORPGs from the 'good old days' were what *created* the mold that stifles the genre today.

Those old MMORPGs did not have grinds????? The old generation of MMORPGs invented the online timesink/grind mechanic. It was the method developers used to keep monthly subsciptions. Don't try to rewrite history or cover the the blatant timesinks that existed in those previous games.

Blizzard never does anything truly innovative with their games.   The basic mechanics of WoW are derived from EQ which were derived from UO.   Blizzard took the mechanics from previous games, made them accessible (by cutting out the garbage) and insured that their games are extremely well polished.   But they are still very much in the same mold established by UO and EQ.

Returning to the 'good old days' is the same as staying in the mold.    If you want something new that breaks the mold, then by definition, it will be different from what has been done in the past.

I think TOR could be different.  Bioware's emphasis on storyline and personal character plot development has some complaining it's too much like a single player RPG in the MMORPG space.    But that's doing something different and breaking the mold.     You can tell it breaks the mold because of people complaining that it's not like the games they remember from the 'good old days'

(Those good old days, by the way, drove away most regular gamers and turned MMORPGs in a tiny niche market compared to other video game genres.   Developers have little reason to return to them if they want to keep their companies afloat)

".....The question is how a massively-multiplayer game that has the rights to the single most popular licensed property of the late 20th Century, the backing of a company with deep pockets, and a dream team of developers can end up being in the absolute best estimation no better than any other game of its kind, and by many accounts, including my own, among the worst..."
