Is it just me or has Age of Conan turned into a Vanguard like game?
You know, poor launch, lots of hatred, director leaves game, new director/owner, new hope, large patches improving the game, some good reviews of people who came back, yet somehow stuck in limbo not being able to really grow in numbers.
It's like the ex-con who served his time, went through rehab and is now trying to live a honest life but people still try to keep away.

For non-sandbox amusement park MMOs it seems like that launch is golden oportunity that decides fate of game. Player base rarely grows up after bad launch for those. And even after good launch only way to go after few months from launch seems to be down. WoW might be expection to this - but I think that it also have decreasing subscription numbers now.
Funcom really screwed up AoC launch. At least one more year in development, less lies and more content - then it would now have solid million player subscription base.
Asheron's Call 2, Horizons of Ishataria, Vanguard, Everquest 2, Anarchy Online,Matrix, Warhammer Online, ...
Hopefully devs and investors learn that you can patch MMOs, but you can't patch broken launch.
