Vanilla servers are a novelty within the WoW community for a while now, the reason why it wont work, its because they would have to change, items mechanics etc... to make it work, gear wise and mechanics wise WoW was so basic, if they did launch it, probably a few people would join it to then get bored and pissed off at the state of raiding and itemization,
They could setup the servers running 1.12.2. You install original WoW and patch it to that.
That problem solved.
Its not really that simple, you would have people complaining about several things, balance issues, gear problems, boss issues but ofc there wouldnt be any more support because they are no longer developing vanilla content then they would have to spend resources fixing and patching older content or the other possiblity any gimmick or imbalance just would never be fixed, what about when people have beaten naxxramas 40 what are you going to do? Again people will start calling out for more vanilla content and they will have to put more resources into development of old content, its a major headache and its not really that simple, the support needed behind it would just not be worth it.
Bottom line, yes maybe you would be happy with just being playing with that patch, but most people would complaint about content and would call out for fixes and content development.

Yes, it would be as easy at that. By 1.12 every class had had their talent and ability reviews and WoW was at its most balanced. Never ever has WoW been as balanced as it was by the end of Classic WoW for PvP.
You do realise that 1.12.2 was the last patch before 2.0, right?
There would be no need to "fix" or patch Classic WoW. Second half of 2006 WoW was rock solid. The only problems were if realms were overpopulated. There were very few bugs. Please explain to me why 1.12.2 couldnt work now when it did perfectly well back in 2006? There would be no need to patch Classic servers.
And what gear problems would there be? That there was no gear for ret/prot paladins or feral/moonkin druids? Too bad. Thats the way classic WoW was.
So what if people do call for more content? If Blizzard released classic server it would be "as is". Besides maintaining the server, nothing else would be done. Just because people call for content, even after Blizzard would have CLEARLY STATED THAT NO MORE CONTENT WOULD BE CREATED doesn't mean Blizzard will create more content.
Just because you cleared Naxx doesnt mean people will stop automatically playing. People cleared Black temple 8months before Sunwell Plateau came out. Did they all quite because they had done all the content? Do you even realise how long it takes for 40 people to gear up in 9 pieces of Tier 3???
And then Blizzard could release Burning Crusade servers running 2.4. I would love to go back and do Sunwell Plateau. I'd love to do M'uru pre first nerf.
And even if they did quit so what? At least Blizzard got an extra 9-10 months extra subscription from people.
Guess who much money Blizzard is earning from me now? $0.0000000000000000000000000000000
So, if they put up classic servers and lets say put on the conditions:
1. Must have latest expansion, $40
2. A one of $20-$25 fee to create characters on the server, similar to paying money for play on the arena tournament realms.
plus the $15 a month for 10 months. Thats $215.
Now, is $215 more than $0.00000000. Well, my calculation its ... $215 more!
Blizzard launches Vanilla WoW servers. I haven't logged in 1.5 weeks. In fact, since resubbing last month, I only logged in about 5 times. Just lacking the interest I once had and my gametime goes toward Eve and Aion betas. Don't know why I even re-subbed. I shrugged off WotLK originally as a bad xpac and after trying it, I'm just not impressed, only bored by it. I noticed a growing request for vanilla servers on the official forums. Blizzard needs to wake up and realize that the direction they have taken the game is backfiring on them. There is no strong loyal userbase like there once was. Who is with me? Who would come back to WoW if they launched Vanilla servers?
They are instead aiming on the mass market, loyal fans are great but when you can get a few times as many one year players as the loyal fans it isn't a hard point.
Most MMOs do tend to kill themselves with expansions anyways. When you raise the level it tends to destroy the low level gameplay. They should have kept 60 levels and just added more things to do and more end game material.
Ironicly this was what made people quit EQ and start Wow 5 years ago...

Thats good point.
But why have subscriptions numbers in EU/NA barely increased in the last 18 months?
""Please explain to me why 1.12.2 couldnt work now when it did perfectly well back in 2006?"
I would guess because most of the code used to make that one is not compatible with the code used today... They would have to reverse engineer the server software to work with the older code.
Not to mention that the "guy"* who worked on the code back then maight not be with the company any more.
Also Blizzard are Utilitarian and always sees to the option that makes the highest amount of people happy... a vanilla server does not fall with in this parameters
That is my take on it, right or wrong does not realy matter.

Really? You should have seen the servers on 3.2 patch week. It was a mad-house, wall to wall people.

One man, a small pile of money, and the screwball idea of a DIY Indie MMORPG? Yep, that's him. ~sigh~
revisit the beginning. Sounds appealing, but I have that feeling after 20 minutes I would realize why I don't participate in that game anymore.
