The source isn't confirmed, but here's what it says:

The first time Closed Beta tester recruitment beginning.

Recruitment period: From August 3, 2009 To August 30, 2009

Application method: Application from official site

Number of recruitment: About 7000 people

The winning announcement: It notifies the winner with mail

Entry fee: Free of charge

Closed Beta beginning expected date: September 9, 2009

 

But yeah, could be fake, so don't get your hopes too up!

Dunno if you can access the topic though. It's not a valid source, but this could have come with the newsletter you subscribe to at the official FFXIV website, which is why it doesn't show up there.

Yup this is going to drive me nuts for the rest of the day!!!!!!!  I am going to keep an eye on that site to see what they say.

I looked at few sites and found some twitter posts that verify the dates about the beta, but only 2 so far...

which could be explained by the fact that it's like 4~5 A.M in Japan right now, and if SE only recently sent the e-mail/updated some website with this info, not many would be awake to know about it.

Very true, also it may only be for the Japanese player base. I hope that it isnt. I would love to try the beta for this game!

 The very first closed betas (like this one) will most likely be JP only, but when the open beta rolls around then we'll surely be given a chance to play as well.

 Seems to be fake as of now.

8/3 is Monday according to the pic, but so is 8/30 which isn't true. The grammar is also a bit inconsistent. So, if it's not SE's screw-up, we got trolled by JP's =/

I'm guessing trolled.  I didn't see any official annoucement on the jp FFXIV web-page.

That should only come up after 8/3 since that's when the recruiting starts...

This could have been a newsletter sent to JP's e-mails, but looks unlikely now, yes.

EDIT: Could be that they mean Sunday midnight (which would be Monday?)....

Really, the bit that gives it away is the "offline"

I'll be very surprised if this is true.

I don't understand where the debate is.  Look at it closely:

Final Fantasy XIV

Up until now, it has always been a stand alone sign plus the group of characters springing out from the middle.

Now, if that isn't enough to give it away... the background image was used once before for a FFXI posting a while back and if you look closely, you can see where the artist used a clone stamp tool to cover up the original text.  You can also see where the deeper blue colors are overlapping with the lighter blue of the background.  

Still, hypothetically speaking... let's say that still isn't enough.  The "o f f l i n e" crosses over with the red bars a little bit and does not maintain the original font that says "O N L I N E"... S-E subtitles are ALWAYS capitalized.

Now, the only reasonable explanation for it to read offline at this time, would be to establish that the servers are offline; however, even if that were the case, why is the text overlapping the red bars?  This would diverge from SE's usual attention to detail.
