Saga! apoligies if it's already been mentioned in this thread. It's not 3 bad........ok. I say not 3 bad, but it's not imediatly shit.........Its free 2 play! ok! u get what u pay 4. It amused me 4 a few weeks and I belive It can b built on........maybe with a public toilet but thats beside the point right now. I didn't read the whole thread due 2 drunkenes, but why not give it a go.
Saga is the best mmorts I've played yet, but that doesn't say much.
On a side note, I downloaded Beyond Protocal, but the graphics whore inside of me won out, and I ran away screaming, "EWWWW!"
Any game that makes someone scream "EWWW!" in the same post where they described Saga as the best MMORTS they've played must truly have terrible graphics.

Blizzard really is the company that would have had the best chances at creating a MMORTS. They got WoW as a money-making machine, and they also got lots of highly successfull RTS under their belt. Combing their experience with WoW and RTS to create something new sounds like it would make sense. Instead, they opted for an oldschool approach and are creating a game that feels like an engine patch for SC1. Sure, SC2 will be a good game - but it doesn't really get me hyped, either. Been there, done that.
I agree, BUT - there is that editor. How powerful is it? Is there a way to link results from previous matches to starting conditions for the next? If so, gamers might well produce something in the vein of an MMORTS. SC 2 editor + the new Bnet? Who knows?

there are/have been MMO/RTS/FPS games put out where you have 1-5 people in an RTS mode the rest are in a FPS view screen. the RTS guys drop buildings and give orders the rest build and attack people they have been pretty popular. though i dont think a full on RTS would work, simply because it would be very hard to do. i played a net/lan match with some buddies in AOE2 where we all played as 1 player it was pretty hard at the start to figure out what your doing.. until we managed to regulate who did what and where. so its possible to do but very difficalt and i dont think many companies want to take the risk to make a RTS mmo. when they can just throw in a MP in to a standard RTS and let the players kill each other that way.
I would like to know the name of those games, been a gamer for some time and I like/love many genre's in gaming but never seen a game like that and it does look intresting, so if you have some names of those games you speak of I really would appreciate that.

Thanks for the links, Savage heard of but not played or looked into it, will do.....
As a warning, none of those games are particularly MMO-like. Although I suppose Savage 2 has a centralized server which tracks persistent items on your character, so maybe it's not so un-MMO-like. /shrug
To nitpick Vow's post a little:
There are actually quite a few other RTS/FPS hybrid games out there (Battlezone 1/2, Dungeon Keeper 1/2, Sacrifice, and a few others.)
Natural Selection 1's community has probably atrophied to near-unplayable levels at this point. Which is sad, because it was significantly better than either Savage game, and I still consider NS1 to be the greatest multiplayer FPS ever. It was fun as hell!

Well keep an eye on Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms, and Kingdom Under Fire 2. Also the company that is making Heroes of Telara, and a SciFi MMO that will have a show on the SciFi channel coinsiding with it and altering the game world as the show changes is making an MMORTS that could be pretty cool.
All 3 I bet will have different implementations, but will give an idea of what could be successful and maybe lead to more developers breaking into this design.
The following has the greatest chance of implementing a real RTS and MMORPG meld. The previous 2 are a browser game and a single player RTS with a persistant world map. The following though is:
Channel 2 (working title), MMORTS with Third-Party Development Studio Petroglyph Games Inc.
Channel 2 is from world renowned real-time strategy game experts, Petroglyph. Trion and Petroglyph are creating a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game, set to define a new genre and standard for online games. Petroglyph is utilizing Trion's advanced server architecture, designed to enable massive scalability, dynamic content evolution and cross platform development, to create an epic gaming experience.
Channel 3 (working title), MMOARPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Action Role Playing Game) produced in partnership with Syfy Channel
Channel 3 is a groundbreaking collaboration between Trion World Network and Syfy Channel. A dynamic, connected entertainment experience, Trion's game and Syfy Channel's television show will blend seamlessly, allowing fans of the universe to enjoy it in two mediums and watch developments in the show affect the game and events in the game affect the show."

thast perfect i love squard
plus it works for any setting fantasy, sci-fi etc
Firaxis is thinking about making a Civilization MMO. Considering I'm playing CiV 4 right now, that would be pretty damn mind blowing.
Shattered Galaxy (MMORTS) seems like it's still going.
It's basically a fleshed-out version of the "Squad-based RTS" Cereberus suggested, and has been around for a very long time.
Actually the thread's been around a very long time too. Maybe I already mentioned SG. :X

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idh5H7vGPug&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIPdBn5hK9Y&feature=related
Worth a try. Loved the atmosphere in that one.
Natural Selection 2:

Under development for ages. Still looking forward to it, tho.
Savage 2:

Also looking pretty good. I never got around to actually playing it.
Although this looks a bit like an MMO, it isn't one.
