Hi all,
CoH was fun for me for awhile (I admit it was my first MMORPG), but I've become tired of the combat, static quests, cookie cutter builds, etc.
I've read a lot of the player reviews here, but some of them are so contradictory that I don't know what to really think of a particular game. Thus, I thought I'd try here.
Ideally, I'd like to get the feeling that my character is more unique, and has more of a visible, lasting impression on the virtual world (The upcoming 'Wish' looks compelling to me, but it's a ways off).
Combat should be fun, but I'd like some other things to do as well (some sort of crafting I guess).
WoW and EQ2 should be coming out soon, and it seems everyone will be flocking to one or the other. However, I'm not sure if I could get into WoW's visuals (although the gameplay is supposed to be good), and a lot of people seem to bash Sony for making their games too frustrating/hard to progress in just so they can make more money. That and lack of PvP (which isn't a necessity I guess, but would still be fun if implemented properly) has me leary of EQ2, despite the nice graphics.
DAoC and AO are giving out free trials, but there are so many expansions for each that I think I would feel left out, especially when everyone bolts for WoW or EQ2.
Is there anything out there you think I would enjoy?
Thanks in advance.

You'd probably like Tabula Rasa as one of their features is everyone will have an effect on the world. And its combat system is also unique. But that games not coming out for another year or so.
Welcome to mmorpgs The genre is long over due for repairing that problem. . .CoH is epitomizes the issues you mentioned.
Even though there will be a little, just a little bit of what you mentioned in every mmorpg, the game that I am going to next, after having tried most, which I think will minimize the sting of redundancy, static-ness, mundaneness is WoW. http://www.blizzard.com/wow/
It seems to offer wonderful breadth and depth of game-play. . .more so it seems than others that will come out at a similar time.
But try the open beta, which is going to happen real real soon. . .they are preparing for it as I write this. That way, you can play without paying for a short period to trial it for yourself.
Let me edit this:
Also look into Anarchy Online if you like the sci-fi feel rather than the fantasy feel.
Star Wars Galaxies.

I know what you mean about CoH. I liked the game but it was a bit too simplistic and I tired of it quickly. I've played EQ for 5 years and so far (despite all its faults and dislikes I had with the game) IMHO its the gold standard until something else takes the throne. Don't worry too much about the expansions not everyone jumps into them and nowadays most games come bundled in some type of "gold" version that puts together a number of the earlier expansions. Try it out for awhile and if you don't like it you didn't waste your money on expansions.
I had a blast with EQ but it has its tedious aspects (camps, level grind, etc...). What finally did me in was the difficulty (and time required!) of doing anything worthwhile after level 60 and the unfriendlyness towards soloers/casual players.
DAoC is a great game (at least the year or so I played it) and I would recommend it. It has its problems but IMHO they are a bit easier to take then in EQ.
AC2 was also cool but it just wasn't my thing and I only played it for a few months so I'm no expert.
Lineage II was very cool and original but it didn't have any "stick" for me. I only played in beta so someday I'll go back to checking it out.
Legacy of Ryzom is the most unique game I've played in a long time and I really liked it but again I only played the beta and it was VERY buggy. Not sure how much better it is but it also didn't keep my attention.
EVE Online was one I had high expectations for but the game mechanics and interface just turned me off but you might like it. It was just too much effort and not enough gains for me.
Anarchy Online was one of the games that I really, really, really wanted to like and play for more then a few months but in the end I just got bored with this one.
Horizens is basically a ditto of AO, only did 3 months with this one.
Neocron 2 was the biggest disappointment, I followed this game for years prior to the release, through beta and then release. I did like elements of it but at least when I played it I always felt lost regardless of how much research I did. I prob played this for longer then I should have but who knows what its like now.
RoE is one I'm not even sure how I came around to playing, it seemed to have lots of promise and its FREE so WTH. It just wasn't enough despite the price and I moved on. It was also very buggy and kept crashing all three of my PCs.
Shadowbane is another big disappointment. Got this b/c friends were playing it and I gave it a fair shake. I know some people love this game but I just could not get into it.
SWG another one that my friends got me to try. I am a HUGE SW fan and had very high hopes for this one. I think IMHO it was launched too early, with not enough content and too many bugs. Someday I may go back and give it another shake.
UO will always hold a special place in my heart. But I've moved on and foward. I was very disappointed when UO2 was cancelled.
WoW beta (Nnyan on the 2nd PvE server) now i went into WoW thinking I disliked the graphics and almost didn't want to like this one. But I have to tell you I really really really like this one. I haven't played EQ2 beta yet but so far this one is the one I think will take EQ's throne (I'm not taking into account other soon to be released games).
Thanks for the feedback so far. Some nice, constructive posts. Keep 'em comin'. :-)
Behold: Seems a lot of people liked AC, but not AC2. Someone in CoH told me to give it a look as well when I got bored.
Disastorm: Tabula Rasa does look interesting to me. Plus I've been playing Mr. Garriott's games since . . . Akalabeth. Did I just say that out loud? Yes, I'm that old. :-)
Cik_Asalin: Yes, I certainly can't expect there to be no repetitiveness in a MMORPG. Life is repetitive, therefore things based upon life will tend to be repetitive. Seems like a lot of people like WoW's depth, even in it's infancy, so I will probably have to give it a look. As I said, the graphics were a minor turn-off, but I hear the screenshots don't do it justice. Plus I'll take gameplay over graphics 90% of the time.
AO and DAoC do look interesting still. I would've played them when they first came out, but they didn't have broadband here at the time. I'm just wondering if it's too late to get in on 'em now? They're both doing the 'free trial' thing, but I'm still worried about everyone jumping to WoW/EQ2. I guess it can't hurt to have a look though.
dmitri84: A friend of mine stuck with UO until pretty recently, now he's into SWG. However, it seems a lot of people I played with in CoH came over from SWG. Not sure what that means. :-)
Cik_Asalin, Nnyan: The fantasy and sci-fi genre have about equal interest to me. I don't think I would an enjoy an MMORPG based mainly around ships in space though (like EVE). I loved 'Elite' back in the day (again, showing my age, heh), but it's just not what I'm looking for in a MMORPG. Seems to be beautiful and have a lot of strategic elements though, which is nice.
I was seriously considering Saga of Ryzom. I read quite a few of the player reviews on it here, but there were so many conflicting opinions it led me to write my original post. :-) I've kind of taken most of the reviews with a grain of salt, but a girl (Sputniik, and a Canadian girl at that . . . she has to be reasonable, right?) who played CoH seemed to give it a fair shake. Perhaps enough of one for me to give it a shot, once the lag and some bugs are worked out of it. That seems to be the universal knock on it, thus far.
Anyway, this post is getting long. I really appreciate the feedback so far, and am looking forward to a few other opinions as well. I'm kind of leaning towards waiting for WoW now, but still have the urge to try DAoC, maybe AO (one liked it, the other said it was boring), and Saga of Ryzom.
I forgot to mention it in my original post, but Matrix Online also has some appeal to me, but I'm not sure about the combat system. However, I'm sure everyone playing beta is under a NDA, so I won't get much help there yet. :-)
