Aion is looking to be the new MMO for me, assuming it doesn't have a horrible launch or anything. I'm really relying on this game to bring back my zest for MMOs and to prevent any monopolys in the MMO world. Anyway, for all those beta testers out there I was wondering if some people could fill me up on the PvE aspects of the game, seeing as how raiding and grouping is def my type of gameplay, and the pet gameplay if you play a Spiritmaster. Some games get both right and some just can't manage to put out enough content and all.

All I know is im going to go batshit crazy if this game doesn't support/encourage group play.
Especially in pvp.
If you want to continue the main story/quest line you need to group up. If you are going into the Abyss alone then good luck with that. I'm going to be bringing my friends lol.
The SM is a very fun class if you like pet/micro management, is something like a mix of everquest magician and necro, a very solid and fun class with direct nukes, dots, fears, snares, roots, drain life, heal pet, call of the hero, etc...
About the group pve gameplay, atleast the group content in the "newbie" zones ( 17 to 20 group zone ) is very fun and have an appropiate difficulty.
ps. and pets have very cool look :P
It looks like Aion will be the new game for a lot of people
I play a Sprtmstr , lets just say that i started in CB3 and if i hadn't been raving about this game for the past 3 yrs my wife probably would have thought i'd lost my mind logging over 80 hrs now Luv my pets and as of thismorning hit lvl 22 and got my firespirit upgrade. No doubt i'll be cashing in on my pre-purchase come september. I'm not going to drop names and compare it to OTHER games i've played but in itself I think it ROCKS. I solo'd to 15 in my first weekend then thisweekend started to find it easier to group and on some quest impossible not to ( there r still some back quests i need to do because i STILL cant solo there ). Oh and as for the PvPvE, running in packs of 20+ chasing guys as they pop in from rifts was NUTS. Watch your butt if your out there doing quests as i got wacked a few times by groups coming through when my back was turned. Spiritmaster: Haven't played much of the others but i like the pet control and crazy Dmg i can do if i set my spells of in the right order not to mention the pet buffs using DP , but watch your MP as you can burn through it FAST if your not carefull. Sure i'll keep beta testing but this will be the ONLY game im paying to play for a WHILE ramble, ramble, ramble later
I've only been in for a couple of days, but the spiritmaster class is fun.
Good for solo'ing and there's a bit of diversity there (by virtue of pets having different strengths) when it comes to teaming. They also have some useful non-pet spells which make them handy in teams - eg. there's one to strip buffs off an enemy.
At least on the server I was on, the class seems under-represented. Pets can't fly, so spiritmasters may be less appealing for pvp. But at least from what I've seen, they seem good for both solo and group pve.
as for grouping its deffinitly a grouping type of game, i mean you don't NEED to but goes alot better if you do. even on the quests you can solo i was getting group invites for on the chinese servers.
and as for horrible launch it won't happen they could release it as is (1.0) and it still runs smoother than any other launch i've played. hell plays better than most games thats been out for a year now. i do not know why, but when i played wow i capped 60 fps no matter what i did. in Aion i have seen up to 120 fps in an open field, and everything on max.
and if you like pet classes SM is the best pet class i've played in any game. just all around fun class, pets are bad ass looking as well. alot of cool features to the class, life tap, dots, direct damage spells, debuffs, roots, snares, fears. and THE best petter ability in the game is the stigma spell to dump all your agro onto your pet. and its only like a lvl 22 spell. saved my ass so many times, game has pretty fast respwns so you will get mobbed but makes it more fun..lol pet is tanking, gets mobbed he dies but you manage to kill one of the 3, aoe root, resummon pet, dump all my agro on it and when they break they go right for him an impossible for me to peel after i dump that much agro on him...lol
the sm lvl 10 dp ability is the best of the classes imo, mainly because it lasts like 10 minutes and its a super pet buff. increases dmg by ALOT i don't even have to make him taunt he holds with dmg alone. and while the buff is on i tare through mobs so fast i have my dp meter atleast 1/2 full by the time it wears off.o did i forget to mention the spell that increases chance mobs drop items by 20%?..lol just all around great class. and i like that the pets change from lvl to lvl like fire elemental rank 1 looks different from the fire elemental rank 2. just getting the cooler looking pet was pushing me to lvl faster gives me sort of short goals that seem to go fast.
The same thing goes for me. I'm just playing WAR (lol) until Aion is released. I'm just hoping NCSoft adds more quests before final release, that's the only big concern with me about the game currently.
Plus I want some DX10 lovin...
Wtf. Can you link me the name of that spell?
I don't know of any SMs in-game and I've never partied with one. I'll reroll asap lol. I like grinding for items.

lvl 22 skill book spell i was wrong thought it was a stigma
Command: Decay I
Commands the Elemental to automatically use its own attack skills. The Elemental inflicts persistent damage according to its element type, and decreases the enemy's elemental resistance. The Elemental also possesses the ability to increase the chances of the enemy dropping items.
Water Elemental: Decrease water resistance
Wind Elemental: Decrease wind resistance
Earth Elemental: Decrease earth resistance
Fire Elemental: Decrease fire resistance
don't remember where i read its a 20% increase tho it hink it was my skill list in game it gave a percent.
i believe it was only 1 or 2 min recast
Holy shit. That alone makes it worthwhile for me to play SM
*has nightmares about the crafting stones not dropping*

lol yeah its a pretty sweet ability and, SM is better for opening those big ass chests. those elemental orb things they cast might seem like a dot but they're not, they'll do the 1 dmg per hit, you meleeing and the air pet has fast melee takes them out pretty quick
The game isnt bad....
The version so far being done in america has a few drawback that are major ones in my mind....
One is the limited flight times....you have wings but can only fly for 60 seconds.....you can eventually increase this to almost 3 minutes at level 30 and beyond.....
I find this annoying becasue there are things you can harvest in the air...and the fly limit prevents this...also aeriel combat cant be done very well with such limitations
The second which is another big one for me....is the incorrect level ratings of enemies......at low levels its about right.....but once you reach about level 18...you run into 16s and higher level enemies that simply do alot more damage then they should......
For example: There these veteren kobold guys you run into...that are level 16...and they do on single hits over 800 damage per hit......enemies have alot more helath then a player which is usual...but this is kind of lame....you get a misison at level 18 to defeat 12 of these encounters and find you can do not much at all to them.....i leveled to 20 as a chanter and still couldnt beat them.
Anywise as i said...those are the biggest issues i think the game has.....limited flight time and incorect enemy ratings.
otherwise the game is fairly good.....there are alot of PVE missions to do....the only thing to remember is that the maps you see are 2 dimensions.....they dont display height or depth
yah they need to definalty work on those two issues i mentioned....if they dont...people will beat feet fast...there are too many other games out there for people to choose from and if there is problems people will just plain switch.
It's funny to hear you say they were underrepresented on your server, because when I played during the beta event, seemed like every other person I met was a spiritmaster lol. Maybe it's just because it was during the beta event and it appeals more to western players for some reason.
I tried it myself, pretty fun even though I normally hate pet classes. It plays similarly to the WoW warlock but with cooler, upgradable pets and more emphasis on controlling them. The style of the combat in Aion makes a similar class more engaging that it normally would be. For example, the first DoT spell you get, called Erosion, hits for initial damage and a small explosion/dustcloud engulfs the enemy on each tick with a sound effect that makes you feel like it's getting hit hard; way more satisfying than just seeing a number pop up periodically like in WoW. Little touches like this really distinguish the newer classes and combat, imo.
As the previous poster described though, the enemies are tough enough that every battle ends up being epic .
Now if I could just decide between spiritmaster and sorceror =/.
The 20% increase is multiplicative not additive so if the drop rate for a rare item is 1% then its increased to 1+1*.2 = 1.2%.
It sounds better than it actually is.
Here's up close shots of the pets:

lol umm you do realise there IS a difference if you pay attention. i was use to it from Vanguad tho. but in the name tile there are Dots in there telling you the strength of the mob for its lvl. most are only 2 dot some are up to 5 dot mobs wich are alot tougher BUT soloable. and the elite Mau you run into at 18-20 have completely different tiles around their names so you know they're elites. but i mean i know we don't have the game manuals yet wich i'm suer its detailed in there tho. kinda like the elites in WoW that have that gold dragon around their name, you know when you see it, thats an elite group mob.
and that area is more like an outdoor dungeon, its ment to be grouped. hell at 22 they still kick my rangers ass..lol
nonelite
nonelite 4 dot
4 dot elite group mob

The level ratings aren't incorrect, it's just that the system is a bit more detailed than it seems. It's not the common thing you see in other MMOs you may have played, it was also different for me and kind of surprised me at first (new things that I don't understand at first are fun for me to learn about). IMO it's an innovative way for target measuring.
You can check how to measure an enemy strength with this very helpful PowerWiki (official Wiki) article:

thanks for that link, those dots confused the shit out of me once my friend brought it up this last closed beta. Haha.
yeah if its not something you're use to its odd, but i use to play vanguard wich had a simular system. they had teh dots like that but at 4-5 dots you pretty much had to kite it.
kinda like i said about the wow tiles, there was normal, then silver dragon and gold dragon. tho would be nice for Aion to change the tiles a bit more between the elites and nonelites its pretty close now could easily miss it if in a hurry
Where did you read that?
That sucks if that's so.

The SM version of decay or erosion, something like that, you can find it in the class skill list on aionsource's armory.

Uhm, I don't think this is true as I've looked over every SM spell available to us in CB and saw nothing that mentioned increased chance of item drops off mobs. Theres a list of spells on aionsource.com so when I get a chance, I'll double check to make sure, but I'm almost positive theres no such spell / ability.
I had it linked just above your post!
