Okay. To start, I am a HUGE fan Ultima Online, Guildwars, and at one point in time, I even liked WoW's PvP (arena only). The thing these all had in common, was a ranking system. Not an individual player ranking system (UO and WoW does) but a Group PvP ranking system. Your whole team was ranked, and it enforced team play to be the best.
Aion is a game I didn't follow for a few reasons. One of the reasons was because I didn't want to invest any money in a game that has the general consensus of being, when played, but sounded like an awesome game pre-release (AoC, Warahmmer, DF anyone?). I didn't want to build myself up, and later be dissapointed (like the afforementioned games). So, now after reading a few reviews, and a few things people have problems with, (the RNG post is the one that is turning me away the most right now), I think the biggest thing is going to be the emphasis on group PvP, and how much did the Devs go to the extent of making it fun?
Fun for me is competing for a title of being the BEST. In WoW, you are listed as the #1 Team on Armory. In Guildwars, you are listed as the #1 Guild in GvG. In Ultima Online (at it's best, and still on free shards) you and your guild were listed as the guild with the most faction points/murders.
These aren't the only things that make the game fun... but they sure as hell help me keep playing a game, even when I find everything else in the game not fun. Again, I'm a PvPer... that's what I do... I like to "Pwn n00bs".

There is an ingame ranking system by faction based on abyss points ( pvp reward points for killing peps ), so yes the game have the tools that are you looking for, if i remember well there is two rankings, one individual and other for guilds.
From what I read as well you get a title like "Hero" or "champion" if you're in the top 10 for abyss points. So there are plenty of ways to flaunt your epeen .
Awesome, that is what I'm looking for.
