Recommend a game to one who loved pre Shadowlands Anarchy Online

The first MMO I played was 10six, which i loved more than any game i've ever played. But then I realized that i needed to have a life outside of videogames so I had to quit (10six basically required you to play 10 hours a day. Then I found Anarchy Online. I played it right from the beginning. I loved that game even with all of the bugs. I loved the scifi theme, the very deep character customization, but most of all I loved the lore and the real feeling of exploration as i discovered new cities and ghost towns. It all felt so real and mysterious. It was like being in a real alien world where I didn't know what to expect next. The mission system was great as well. It made finding a team quick because everyone was always looking for a team right in every major city. If you didn't want to team, there were always single player missions for the times you just wanted to kill some time on your own. Then came shadowlands. It was awesome at first. A great blending of scifi and fantasy. If i burned out on the scifi mission running and exploration. I could get into a quasi scifi fantasy setting and it would feel someone original. Then someone realized that just camping hecklers (a new monster in shadowlands) would level you up far quicker than anything else in the game. In fact, once you were levelled up too much to fight hecklars in one reagion, you would just go on to the next and fight hecklars there. That caused everything to fall apart. No one ran missions anymore. Teams took forever to form. The original scifi setting turned into a ghost town. No one played. No one looked for teams to run missions. All anyone did was kill hecklars, if you were willing to wait around long enough to get into a team.

After reading that, can anyone recommend an mmo for me? I've played eve. I thought it was all amazing, but also that I would have to dedicate too much time to it to get anything other than solo mission running out of it. I've played wow, which I liked for the most part, but It was a bit too simple for me. It lacked the complexity and realism found in AO. Any suggestions?

edit:

simplified

need game that has:

Interesting engaging environments that make you feel like you are actually exploring and keep you excited

quick to find to a team

can accomplish something in an hour long setting.

pve important

solo and teaming both rewarded

deep character customization

scifi not necessary but definitely a pro

I know just how you feel. After shadownlands I bailed on AO, and ended up playing SWG...but of course that game has been ruined now.

All I can say is good luck...I havn't found anything even close in the complexity and atmosphere that old-school AO offered.

Yeah, that's a tough one - I didn't play AO as much as I would have liked, but it had some really unique ideas and was great for exploration. The real problem is that most major titles are going away from real exploration as fast as they can, in favor of limited areas chained together with quest rails. It's going to be extremely tough to meet all of your goals, I believe, and in terms of scifi games there are only one or two options right now.

In my opinion one of the few games that is left where you get a real feel for exploring the unknown is Vanguard - it's a huge world, and there's so much out there, you feel like you can wander forever and find new places - of course they may be unitemized dungeons or whatever when you do find them, but the staff is slowly improving that. Plus you can make boats and travel by boat, which is fun. Unfortunately Vanguard doesn't really fit into the neat, hour-long mold, and it is still a lot of soloing and duoing.

    So good luck!

I'll make this easy, but the unfortunate truth is, there is nothing out there even close to Anarchy Online right now... at least nothing that gives you the same gameplay experience. Third-person avatar Sci-Fi is a way underdone MMOG genre, even though we have SWG, and some ship-based Sci-Fi MMOGs. Granted, I haven't played every game out there, but I think I have similar tastes to yours and I have yet to find anything that truly compares to AO. There are of course games in development now that may fit the bill, but they are a ways from being done. I'd suggest looking around this site, at the game list in particular and look for yourself. Most of the MMOGs that are listed will have some sort of free trial you can do if it looks interesting to you.

Thats too bad about there not being anything else like AO at all. I'll check out the game list. Maybe I can find something there.

What do you guys think about EarthRise?

Picked up the Vanguard trial myself, and it feels kinda like old EQ. Funny that this is a good thing, when we used to scoff at EQ and it's players back in the day in AO .

But yeah....looks like Earthrise, Fallen Earth, and The Secret World will be the ones to keep an eye on for us old AO vets.
