Like I said, stop accusing people of being shills or GTFO. I would love it if I could be paid to do this. I need the money. But I am not.
You can either suspect everyone of wrongdoing and lying to you, or, you can grow up and stop being so paranoid. Its a lot easier, and more relaxing to actually trust people. Doesn't mean you have to be naive,
I laugh at the people who say they won't play these games if there's a cash shop. Folks, within a year, almost every game will have a cash shop (even if coupled with a sub) a of one sort or another, even the big ones like SWOTOR. its the future folks, Dev's are going to maximize their revenue. And to those who say they'll give up on the genre? No, you won't, you'll be back.
Yes, I will, but thanks for answering for everyone.
I have zero faith in Cryptic now, STO will be a bust.
Anyone willing to pay a monthly subscription for 'almost' the whole game is a fool.
I wonder if SoE learned that, might want to ask the recently fired 41 employees.
Yeah.. nothing to do with a global economic contraction..
Please don't accuse someone that disagrees with you that they are a shill for Cryptic. That is accusing Cryptic of a nasty thing, and you should apologize for that. No, you should wake up. If it was made clear how prevalent corporate shills are on game site fora, I think a lot of people would be shocked.
Just ask yourself this: why wouldn't companies have some of their employees post incognito to sway public opinion on their products? Here's the thing, people act shocked that Cryptic is trying to make money. Thats what companies do. That is what they have to do. They have bills to pay, employees, creditors, etc. They need the money. Something that Zinc or Jack Emmert told us, is that with the MT, they're able to afford a bigger team, and better content. This is nothing but good for STO. And that means also non-store content as well.
No, it doesn't stand to reason at all. As you pointed out - they are in it for the money. They will lie if it serves their interests to do so.
Just because a company wants to make money, and sets up a MT store, doesn't at all mean they are willing to lie... That is a huge stretch.
That just goes along with the general assumption that Cryptic will be offering useful items in the MT store. I'm not in the business of condemning someone for something they haven't done yet. In CoH/V their only MT items with in game stats was this 'mystic fortune' and a bomb thing. Mystic fortune randomly gives people positive and negative effects that last 20 minutes. The bomb thing KILLs the person using it. Yes, you had to die to set off yourself. Lol, wouldn't exactly call either of those things game changing...
So yeah, while they have said there may be in game things that effect stat, they have also said that STO will never become a MT game..
PS. For those of you going to play SWTOR because of this, SWTOR will have MTS too!
"Most of them will be for non-gameplay affecting items like costume additions, action figures, and the like. You can also spend money on things like renaming one of your characters. You can also purchase items that do affect gameplay but Cryptic adds, "Any micro-transaction that has a game effect can also be earned in the game through play."

Flaming and Trolling is against the ROC, I suggest that if you have any questions in this regard, please Remember to follow our Rules of Conduct. Thread was cleaned up, let's keep it clean or you know the outcome.
Every MMO has micro-transactions now. Yes, many of us don't like it, but its something we either need to accept, or just not play MMOs anymore.
I'll take the "just not play MMOs" route myself.
And saying every MMO has a cashshop is silly.
I've never played a sub based MMO with a cash shop on top of it and I've been playing many MMOs for a decade now.
Which MMOs are you talking about?
LOTRO has a barber shop for changing appearance and social clothing too which you can buy from vendors for ingame currency or craft it yourself, that's how you do it.
Anything else wont get a cent from me because I dont support greed sorry.
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.
I'm sorry but everyone who is bitching about Champion's Online must NOT have ever played the game and have NEVER even looked at the cash shop. The only thing that I ever saw being sold in that CO cash shop was a bunch of fluff dolls that all they do is just follow you around. They serve absolutely no purpose in game at all except to have something to look at. On top of all that, they can be obtained ingame without having to buy them. So, if you are upset because people are able to buy useless dolls from a cash shop then you need a life.
If Cryptic stays true to form and puts similar items in STO then I dont see a problem.
I have hopes for this game as ive been following the series' and movies since the the origianl series launched, yes im really that old. But i will not play a F2P game as i feel cash shops are a scam and certainly will not pay to play a game with cash shops.
What has been said about the cash shop, is that they will be for cosmetic items only and the items be things you can earn in game as well.
You are playing a video game. By definition that means you are not hardcore.
im not scared by MT either. Unless of course cryptic will disbalance game by items obtained in MTs. (like really powerful and rare IOU items that can be cheaply bought with real money) If these "I Own You" items gonna be in MTs then its no longer of issue of toleration. Its just plain and simple - the game will fail because most players will just quit.
It is unfair to compare STO with CO, yes they use the same engine, yes there made by the same company, BUT they will be drastically different games, STO will be awesome and i cant wait to get my hands on it, CO disapointed me but STO is thankfully nothing like it.
And Cryptic has the backing of Atari, and so a billion pound of business value.
Nothing will now stop STO and i for one am very much looking forward to playing it a lot.
That's a lie, I think CO's MT store was heavily modified due to backlash. They did an extremely poor job of handling the whole thing and it seems like a concept that was tacked on with visions of Guitar Hero floating through their head... needless to say I think if there wasn't backlash the store would be up and running and selling very different items. Cryptic got too greedy and in turn I refused to buy CO, I'll also refuse to buy ST:O if it ships with a MT. Which is sad because it's looking choice.
I am not against cash shops, and I have and still enjoy quite a few games that have them. I'm also not against subscription games, for the same reasons.
I do find that having both models is a bit dodgey though. But if all items in the CS can be had by playing the game, then I really don't see what the problem is. A problem would be to have a subscription game in which you would haveto buy cash shop items. Then it would be an utter rip-off.
After the Cryptic billing department were promising people Lifetime Subscriptions for Champions Online after September 1st as long as they bought the game and then reneged on the offer even though people had the e-mails as proof is a deciding factor in me never giving Cryptic 1 penny ever again.
I hope for all the Star Trek fans, they don't get greedy and ruin it, but you guys should be aware and worried of some of the shady activity going on there from the cash shop on down. Cryptic may blame Atari and vice-versa for these acts , but at the end of the day its you and me the player who get screwed so it might be better to just stay away.
Yeah this is one game ive been anticipating but from a distance. Considering the quality of what has been released that last few years and the shady business practices that seem to be the norm of late im not as optimistic as i would like to be.

So... you know for a FACT that CO and STO are going to be totally different, despite the fact that they use the same engine, they are made by the same company and (this is the part you carefully neglected to mention) the fact the CO was just like Cryptic's previous game, City of Heroes?
Because you see, I get the exact opposite impression. By making the same game twice Cryptic has shown us they have a talent for copying themselves and quickly developing games which follow similar mechanics. The fact that they choose to reuse the same engine doesn't lead me to believe they are working very hard to do something new, rather it leads me to believe they are working very hard to quickly release yet another game which reuses the same simplistic "Tank, DPS, healer/buffer" combo that both of their previous games used. Evidence of this can be seen in their vision for how the ship classes in STO will work: Cruisers are the tanks, Escorts are the DPS and Science ships are the "spell casters" so to speak. It seems they are basing the game very heavily around combat and doing it in the exact same style as their previous two games.
The fact that Atari is involved is yet another thing which does not inspire me with convidence but actually does the exact opposite. Atari is not the company of old which created some of the first home video game consoles. This Atari is the new Atari, a heartless, uncaring, corporate monster. They are no better than Electronic Arts, Ubisoft or Sega in my mind. They have used SecuROM in many of their games despite protests by their fans and I can name many Neverwinter Nights 2 fans who have nothing nice to say about the way Atari handled that game and its various expansion packs.
Yeah this is one game ive been anticipating but from a distance. Considering the quality of what has been released that last few years and the shady business practices that seem to be the norm of late im not as optimistic as i would like to be.
Cautious optimism is always a good rule to follow. I myself will be waiting until after release before making my decision. So far it looks good, but you never really know until it's released and your hands are on it.
Cryptic recently announced Champions Online will have a cash shop on top of a subscription in which you can buy with real money items that can also be earned in game. Do you have faith that the Star Trek IP is in good hands, and will you play it if they have a cash shop? For me this has put Cryptic in the same boat as SOE, and I don't think i'll support this model, but to me RMT destroys games in so many ways. How does it affect you?
What do you mean? Latest news from DDO is that sub increases by 40% after it turns f2p + cash shop. For some games, it is the best business model.
Of course whether YOU will support is irrelevant. There are plenty of successful RMT games (maple stories, ROM, ...) that it does look like RMT is a viable model.
Everyone forgets that Cryptic also make CoH/CoV which if you will was an extremely good game. I have faith it is in good hands, as long as they don't add another CS model.

Doesn't worry me until I can notice people beating me in pvp because they bougth some new weapon , which I highly doubt will happen.
There are always going to be lots of people who are way better than I am in an MMO.
I don't care if they are due to more time or money invested into the game.
