I really don't think that SWTOR is going to be the smash Star Wars hit that everyone hopes it will. (I'm one of them people hoping it will be, as I'm a huge Star Wars fan).
The reason being is that this game (SWTOR) is going to require a huge amount of reading and/or paying attention to details. There are more words in SWTOR than in the entire series of the Soprano's. (Read that in the news on AP). This is America. We aren't known for our ability to "want" to read and actually use our brains when it comes to playing MMO's. Otherwise, WoW would never have taken off like it did over here.
Aion is a bit formulaic. It's a good game, maybe even a great game, but formulaic. I do understand that MMO's have to follow a formula to some extent. But I think the next huge game is one that is going to have to be not only very different than what is out there right now, but it's going to have to be easy to latch on to with a shallow learning curve, so that it will be able to pull in the subs from WoW.
Hmm read? What you are talking about is a full voice over that spans the complete TV show of sopranos. There is nothing to read there.
Yeah... true but it'll also be in txt (the voiceover) for those who may not have the ability to hear the voiceover. And also I said that people don't want to have to use their brains too much while playing an MMO. Listening to the entire voiceover and following directions will be integral in SWTOR. I'm not trying to hate on Americans, I'm one also. I just don't know if I want to have what is essentially dozens of novels played out in an MMO. I'm hoping for actual gameplay.
I have no doubt it will fair better than WAR and AoC but will it beat WoW? Mmm would be nice but I'll say I don't think so. This is a really high quality product and I've been playing for some time in Korea then China. Personally I've found the game for me and it's about time someone brought something this solid out. You don't have to remake the wheel for something to be successful you just have to craft that wheel better. Compared to all the bug ridden so so games "with lots of promise" we've been getting the last couple years it's a breath of fresh air. Finally something that is already there and building upon itself not something that is unfinished but being worked on.
theres no doubt in my mind that Aion will be a very successful game because well it is already. No the numbers won't be anything near the asian version but its still gonna be a very popular and well liked mmo. There is no WoW killer because WoW itself was an anomoly. It came out with the right game and the right time and the population just rocked off. Theres only two letdowns in Aion and they are rather minor. First the graphics are very heavily anime orientated which for most in the west is a turn off. Secondly, After a certain point you will have to grind on mobs and pvp to level. It has been heavily toned down from the Linage II days which is a huge Plus.
I think I 'm one of the rare people out there who doesn't mind having to grind on mobs to lvl. There's alot of times when doing something mindless and repetiive has its benefits. I can get irritated at some quests that have you running all over the place to get a measly amount of coin and exp in the end, when the entire time I could have been grinding mobs for 15 mins and gotten more. I think I'll like Aion as I've liked it already in the short beta time I played. But still.... I'm looking forward to an MMO that can balance being a sandbox type of game, with some linear, goal oriented play as well.
SW: TOR will be the major competition for Aion once its released, I will be picking up Aion until Star Wars is released but I will at least try out Star Wars when its released to see which game out of the two I like better.
Aion will be my MMO until Star Wars is released to keep me busy :P
Well, "we" won't, because alot of us realize how pointless that line of thinking is. I'm sure many people who erringly think that's an important question will be, though. The rest of us will be wondering what company is going to make a game that for us has some appeal and is fun on an individual level. How many subs a game has doesn't mean it's a good or bad game for each and every person. You find something you like, whether it has 100K or 1 million subs, and just play it. Comparing a game's subs to another is as pointless as pissing in the wind.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."
while i think its going to do very well here i don't fore see huge wow numbers. it will do way better than the garbage we been getting the last few years easily. others have compared it to be an over hyped game like war and aoc, but i don't see the hype all over the place like i did with war and aoc at all. war being the most extreme hype i've seen wich honestly quickened its demise, no game could EVER live up to the hype spewed by that britsh guy. i personally didn't read up on the game at all prior to playing it, i did watch videos of the SM pets but not much else. i think thats a big factor in why i'm enjoying myself so much in it. i had no idea going in what to expect so there was nothing to live up to or not live up to. if its hyped at all its by the people that has been playing it already (korea and chinese retail)unlike war and aoc wich was over hyped by the companies that made them.
After the first three months when people realize that it;s Lineage II with wings abd allot more grinding flames will come. In teo years we will be wondering what Aion was.

Aion has no hope in hell of breaking the one million mark in NA.
The only game that has any chance of being the next WoW is SWTOR. By that time WoW will be thoroughly exhausted and dated, with everyone looking for the next thing. It has the name recognition, the developer respect, and it is striving to be as mass market as possible with a LOTRO style game in addition to appealing to the lowest common denominator in terms of graphic (ie. the graphics sucks and they make up for it with flashy prerendered cutscenes).
Personally I think SWTOR will suck ass, but that's just because I'm a core gamer looking for the next UO or pre-NGE SWG.
No,just no. I can't believe people falling for hype after aoc, war, lotro, vanguard etc etc etc. Talk again 3 months after the game is released when people start to complain/troll about the game's problems.
I have to agree. The trend continues game after game, each one the 2nd coming of WOW or something.
Aion will do OK due to good timing, don't see much else launching around that time in the same category.
If OP is looking for some negative comments about Aion I could direct him to a dozen or so recent threads on these forums bashing everything from the forced PVP, botting, combat mechanics based on RNG etc)

Quite a few of the posts seems to be based on the premise that the endgame is unknown and it is solely the novelty of a new game with AION. I don't think that many NA gamers are aware that it's been out for about 8 months in Korea (40+ servers) and about two months in China (100+ servers), or that many NA gamers have played it for months now and are basing their opinions on actually experiencing the full range of gameplay.
When will gamers start wondering about what the Aion killer will be? The answer to that seems to be the date of this thread.

Oh look, another what will the next killer be.... Six months after release (or sooner) all the fanboys will be crying about something in the game and it will be yet another cycle of this crap again. Hype, argue, complain, hype argue, complain. Just like all the hype in previous titles at release here. Who really cares honestly. In my opinion Aion is beautiful, yet shallow and typical. There is absolutely nothing ground breaking but everyone has that itch for something new and everyone jumps on the band wagon toting it as the next big "gorilla" killer.
If you like what you have seen in Aion then play it and enjoy it. No one can forecast what will be in two years let alone six months. Play what YOU want to play for YOUR benefit and money and fuck what other people think. Its your game, your money, your time. Aion is already dead to me and it didn't even make it to gold.

The most simple monkey can make a choice. I know Americans have limited brainpower, just look who we elected for President, but still, all people have to do is listen. Like -aLpHa- said, it's basically like watching TV, except you get to choose how the show goes. And even if you're too lazy to do that, there will be undoubtedly guides and walkthroughs online, eventually, that detail the consequences of each choice and which one leads to more EXP/better rewards. So you can choose to, well, choose by listening to the story, or you can copy your friends, or you can look at some guides.
There will be gameplay - the game isn't even in beta yet, and Bioware has more to present at this stage than most other MMOs. Though I do think they need to start releasing more information if they're going to back up the hype created by the cinematic trailer and the early previews.

Well since this game is fairly similiar to WoW... it should recieve most of its subs from WoW players. If Mortal Online doesnt fail it would kill Aion in months.
