I am a huge fan of Square-Enix and FFXI (Have played since US launch and recently quit only a few months ago) and when they announced an untitled Square-Enix mmorpg i was incredibly excited wondering tons of things about it and couldn't wait for them to announce the title. When E3 came along and they showed the Final Fantasy XIV I was incredibly excited but I was dissapointed by one thing. I was dissapointed by the fact they were using old races and faces that look almost identical to those in FFXI. I know there is going to be many more options for character creation besides those but that isn't the point, it shows that they have the mindset of keeping many things similar to FFXI. The majority on this forum sound like they don't want anything different from FFXI except basically FFXI with nicer graphics. Don't get me wrong I love FFXI and feel tons of nostalgia towards but its had its time and now its time to move on. I've already played it to death and want a completely new experience. If I wanted a game identical to FFXI I would just play FFXI. Anybody else want a completely new experience ? because it seems like everybody here wants a FFXI-2.

I agree with you. They should have change the characters and the race, but who knows maybe they still will. I do want a new experience and something a little different from FFXI.
I have a feeling that the game will be different but they will still have some attributes from FFXI. I am sure that they will still keep the subjobs and the ability to change job class without switching to a different character. I think that is what made FFXI unique from all the other MMO's out there.
I think Square's main focus is for us to have something to do at time where we wouldn't have to be dependant on other players or party members to complete a quest. I am expecting more solo friendly quest and easier character development. Hopefully its not too easy characther development like WOW and Everquest.
Only thing that I disliked about FFXI back in the days was waiting for a party. I have wasted hours, and hours of waiting, and waiting, but Square fixed that problem with the level sync.
The people at SE are very smart, and innovative. They have been working on this game for over 5 years.I think this game will be very promising and will live up to the hype. They will not let us down!
I generally believe in "if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it" and anyone who's ever played FFXI for any length of time knows its not broken in the least.
FFXI has had constant improvement since NA release when there were goldsellers/farmers everywhere and chat channels were dominated by them. This was one of the only games I ever played where you saw a complete party of people go out with names like Hihi, Smilejob, Kisskiss, Loveyou, and Hehe all farming.
For a long time, the community was asking them to do something about them and then one day, poof! Most of them were gone never to return after spending all the time building up their farmers. (Sweet!) I'll never forget the day the forums were all full of boohoos from farmers threatening that all their "legit friends" would quit unless they got reinstated, lol. When people like that got banned, it really showed a company taking their real customers seriously.
There are some things that need improvement in FFXI for sure, but I do not want a "revamp". Usually when companies try doing that, they end up with far less players and an inferior product. EQ2 comes to mind of and example of a "revamp" the original players that made Everquest in the first place looked at and wanted to hurl. Now its a game filled with transients who like the updated graphics, but have no idea about the gameplay or community difference.
The reason why it seems to you that the majority here don't want "new faces" is because that's a side issue. We want the gameplay and community issues to remain the focus, not the aesthetics. If your only problem with the game (as it appears to be) is just looks you may be gaming for the wrong reasons. You could play AoC which is a fantastic LOOKING game but average gameplay and solo content from 1-80 and a community that just spams sex jokes and curses all day on the main chat channels.
Again, when you think of all the problems a MMO could have, if its just boils down to looks that's really a trivial nitpick.
"TO MICHAEL!"
They've said in their interviews the only thing that will be like 11 is the character models, and they explained the reason for this was so players who chose to make the switch to 14 would feel something firmiliar about it.
Other than that everything will be different.
Edit: If people want a new 11 they will be sadly disapointed... and they can go back to playing 11 as they have no intentions of retiring that title, and it will be around for many years to come I'm sure.
Hence this game will be VERY different from 11.
There are a couple things that are staying the same. Other than that the whole game is going to be different. They have stated that the gaming experience is going to be different. The graphics are going to be wayyyy better. Yes they are going to use some of the same characters. But they will be adding new ones and since this will not be job specific vs weapon specific the leveling is going to be different. So the experience is going to be different.
I cant speak for everyone else. But I want the things that made FFXI great, to stay in this game. Grouping and the community was perfect. It was so perfect for me that I have not found another MMO to replace it and trust me when I say I have been searching a long time. Other than that I can careless what comes of this game. It doesnt matter to me that they are using the same characters. What I am happy about is that everything else is going to change. They are adding a solo aspect. My hope is that, they only apply that option as a second to grouping (solo is fact, the interpretation is speculation). Other than that, we do not know anything else. All I can say is have some patience and keep an eye out for new info.
I will say this though, you will see no arguments about grouping, mostly everyone loved the grouping in FFXI. Something we hope that they retain. In short nothing we say in these forums have been stated as fact, you might see some guarantees but not a lot of facts. All I can suggest is keep looking at the Final Fantasy Resources section as you will see Khrymson has done a great job obtaining a lot of data in regards to the game. Here is the link.

Many of the things people loved and hated about FFXI, unfortunately go hand-in-hand. People hated forced grouping, but loved the community. It's because of the forced grouping that FFXI had the great community that it did. People hated the slow combat but loved the teamwork and skillchaining. It's because of the slow combat that people had to work as a team and perform skillchains. Can you imagine trying to skillchain while everyone in the party is spamming different skills?
So yeah, I think if SE tries to make a game that pleases both the old FFXI-generation and the new WoW-generation, they're in for a rude awakening.
No one knows whats its going to be like. Its funny how many people act like they know.
I honestly dont look to see anything brand new. Just rehased and tweaked stuff. Theres only so much a company can do in a PvE fantasy type game. Once you realize that you will either move on or like a game for what it is.

I'm sure the same core concepts will be there from FFXI. Sure they'll present it in a new and even innovative way but I wouldn't expect it to be drastically different. It'll be different enough I think to not steal all of FFXI's fanbase but similar enough so that people who enjoyed FFXI and want to move on will play FFXIV.
Only so much you can do? If this moment in time is the pinnacle for MMOs I will be greatly disappointed. I feel the genre still has much more, it just hasn't been done yet.

k I should rephrase that, atm there is only so much a game company can due because of technology. Once new technology becomes cheeper to incorperate into MMO's then that will open doors to new innovative ideas. Were not their yet but its moving.

One such innovation that we're on the brink of is the capabilities that will be opened up with the new Hero's Engine that Simutronics Corporation developed. Not only for it's performance and better/faster world design, but one thing current MMO's are lacking: real-time game alterations.
Here's an article on it for those interested:

"I think that the thing that blew me away most about the engine was the fact that the developers were able to actually make and alter the game world in real time. Basically, the engine lays out the world and the developers populate it the same way they would if they were in the game. The difference is that the developers in question have full ability to alter the world around them in collaboration with the others on their team...
This technology, we were told, actually has the ability to carry over not just into development, but into the live game. So, if you can imagine being a part of a live event where some of the monsters or NPCs are inhabited by developers, or where the developers can literally change the landscape based on the actions of the players Hero Engine actually makes that easy."

Sorry, I think the OP is in the minority with wanting a whole new feel to the game ect. It's a different world there are more/different races ect.. and new gamplay mechanics. Thus it has enough to feel new and fresh while having that great feel of the first.
If there was a WoW 2 I'm sure it would have Orcs and Humans... so it's the same thing really. I don't want an all new game because then there is a good chance it wouldn't feel like the FF that I fell in love with.
Thanks for saying it ... i was going to but couldn't think of how to put it in a sarcastic and demeaning way.
I guess you'll have to worry about whether their intent is to appeal to the exact same type of player as FFXI or branch out and appeal more to other kinds of players and make more money in the process. Cannibalizing their current target audience would be beyond stupidity.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Why would it be a sequel if t were a whole new game? Although come to think of it the Final Fantasy series does tend to make games that are nothing like the previous one but with the same name. IMO they should just take the good parts from the previous one and then throw in a few new ideas. All of the talk about solo content is scary.. I have yet to see an mmo that pleased both solo and group players, PVP and PVE players.... I love FF have played since the original but I am scared.
Honestly, it's very likely that Square's habit of making new FF's completely different has kept the franchise going strong for so long. There are plenty of RPG franchises out there that just add a few things on to their old systems and put out a game with a new story line. FF provides an almost completely different experience with each game. Even FFX and FFX-2 had very different character advancement methods.
I hope they keep innovating and pushing the RPG industry. So here's hoping that FFXIV is something new for players to experience.

You mean like the tales of series? well the newer ones anyways they all have the exact same characters just with different names, its pathetic.
I was refering more to advancement systems. In some respects the combat as well, though they tend to be more a variation of the same theme with that.
I don't see 'the exact same characters' hit. The hero in FFVII and FFVIII were similar. FFIX and FFXII had similar, and annoying IMO, heros. FFVI had no real main hero or heroine to add to the comparrison here. I'd say FFX's hero is close to FFXII but was much less annoying to me. I guess I don't see the 'all the same.' Feel free to enlighten me, I'm sure there's something I'm missing. Considering the different number of support characters (party members) I don't see how it's possible to have all the same characters.

Thats sweet and a perfect example of how technology will bring fresh new ideas to our genre.

It will be as different as FFVII is from FFVIII or FFIX or FFX. It is FF and it is SE. You will have mana and chocobos and all the things that make FF, FF. Otherwise it won't be FF.
This is the very reason why I think it is such an easy topic to talk about. Final Fantasy has usually had some of the same characteristics as previous Final Fantasy games. Now they have taken the same from FFXI and kept the same characters and chocos. Apparently this is going to be based in the future with a different leveling system and better graphics. Sounds like what they have typically done.
This is why this Final Fantasy as a series has been so successful. They have a long tenure of success with some speed bumps. WIth FFXI unfortunately, I believe there was some speed bumps and they improved as they moved along. But I do believe that they have an opportunity here to knock this out of the ball park.
I really wouldnt worry too much. Here's a bit of cold hard truth about the Final Fantasy line.. With the exception of a few games, which were named appropriately, no Final Fantasy game is considered a sequel to another. They all have different settings, themes stories, characters. Now unless Square Enix renames this game FFXI-2 I wouldn't worry too much about it not being a different game. I'm sure it will be. Granted some of the very imited constants in the Final fantasy universe will shine through I seriously doubt Square Enix is going to take the lazy route and just remake FFXI.
Rare FF Universal Constants you can expect to see but not bank on are:
Classes/Jobs
Races
The names of certain NPCs I.E. Cid
A distant variation of one of few basic, generally FF specific, advancement systems
Chocobos
Ancient super powers named after pagan gods and FF specific mythology I.E. Fenrir, Odin, Shiva, Bahamut, Ifirit, ect...
Something to do with Crystals may or may not occur
Airships will be present
Ultimately my point is that you're talking about Final Fantasy... You are going to have elemetns that carry over regardless because it is Final Fantasy. So to ask for smething COMPLETELY new and different is like asking for WoW without Humans or Orcs, or Askin for EQ/2 without masochistic dark elves (who may or may not make believe they're vampires)
Final Fantasy is always different yet always the same.
From what SE has said, they plan on making it very different mechanically (don't confuse that with thematically - yes it will have similar races, chocobos, crystals, magic, airships, etc. That's part of the IP, not the game mechanics).
Honestly, I don't see why they wouldn't make it a whole new game with just a few similarities. It makes no sense financially to produce a game nearly identical to the prequel, with better graphics. Creating a new "AAA" quality MMO is a massive investment. If they wanted FFXI with better graphics, they would just give it an overhaul, like previous games in the genre have done. Obviously, they will take the common sense aspects that work well, but they are more likely to change the things that players are subjectively divided about. They plan to keep FFXI running, so why not try to draw in the casual crowd with their new game, and let the hardcore ffxi loyalists stay where they are. SE makes money from both.
They will probably try to make grouping feel less forced. More solo content from the get go, and easier solo leveling in general (though knowing SE, I highly doubt there won't be some kind of mechanism to encourage grouping to a degree). Most players who left FFXI complained that they simply couldn't devote hours of time to looking for groups (which level sync doesn't really 100% solve). I don't see it becoming a solo to max level in 1 month game, but soloing won't be ridiculously foolish to try like it is in ffxi.
They'll probably have a plan to deal with rampant RMT right from the get go this time, so perhaps the economy won't experience the huge inflation of xi's. That goes a long ways toward making it more accessible, when your next gear upgrade isn't 2.5million gil. I also hope they intend to offer more structured ways for characters to ear wealth (such as worthwhile quest rewards, making crafting less of a money sink, perhaps minigames of some kind); instead of just leaving us to find a farming spot and grind an NM or normal mobs for rare drops which could take hours, or playing the AH.
In any case, I wouldn't expect a clone.
I think the bigger question to me is whether SE will keep the job system or go for an entirely different system.
That is a bigger concern to me, and I hope they add some PvP content while at it. Nothing flashy, but just something you would want to spend time fighting other players, such as coloseum with some rewards. Ballista, brenner, and etc feels more like a sport, anyways most people when dueling there basically ignore the rules anyways.
They have confirmed that they are atleast removing subjobs from the game. I think we'll see the job system back in some form though. They've hinted that progression will be somehow weapon-based, but besides that we'll have to wait for more information. SE always brings something original with each new game, and I don't expect xvi to be different in that regard.
