Does this game still require an uber system?

I've wanted to try this since launch but what kept me away was the posts i've read that it required an uber system and it took up a lot of disk space.Have they done anything to remedy that?

A rig 2 years old or newer should do fine if it's well balanced between CPU, GPU, fast access HD and memory.  The game is CPU intensive and dual cores vastly outperform single cores.  A combination between performance fixes and better hardware in the past 2.5 years has made great performance very attainable in VG.  Windows 7 does very, very well with VG by all reports if you have a choice of operating system.

HD space will probably run you about 22-25 gig or so.

The game runs about the same on my brand new rig as it did on my old system, which equates to tons of hitching and jerking as your traverse the landscape.  Seems lots of people suffer from this, while others don't as much, it's just hit or miss.  It's very frustrating.

It really is all about your HD.

I brought a new 7200 rpm and most of my hitching disappeared, apart from a few locations.

7200 rpm are £20 these days, nothing. If you want superb performance, buy a 10000 rpm disk.

Now playing: VG (after a long break from MMORPGS)
Played for more than a month: Darkfall online, Vanguard SOH, Everquest, Horizons, WoW, SWG, Everquest II, Eve

Hard-drive access is huge as noted.  There are no zones to load, so you PC is loading textures on the fly.  And if you have a slower HD and play with Ultra settings (which is a ton of textures) you'll hitch.

Also, deleting your caches folder regularly along with defrags makes a big difference too.

so basically if i can run eq2 smoothly as well as warhammer and lotr,it shouldn't prove too demanding to my system?

Not necessarily because I run eq2 with literally every setting maxed out and average around 30-40 fps without a problem, except in guild hall, but in Vanguard I hitch and jerk like crazy.  But just try the trial and see for yourself how you run it.

EQ2 runs worse on my system than Vanguard.  LotRO on the other hand is a breeze for my system to handle with everything cranked up to full-blown max (although LotRO has very low system requirements, so that isn't saying much for my PC).  It's going to vary by system, but it seems to be more and more apparent that Windows 7 is VERY Vanguard friendly and goes a long ways towards eliminating the above mentioned hitching when chunking or going through heavily populated areas.

Even though my PC does very well with Vanguard, I do get the hitching when going through places like New Targonor or Khal.  Hitching is different than fps.  I can run around and get 80 fps most everywhere, but still can't get away from the initial hitching problem in some places.

This game runs admirably fine on my sucky vacation laptop.(Geforce 7600 512mb RAM, Turion64X2 2.3 ghz and 2 gig RAM running on Vista) and I strongly urge you to try the free trial.    Get yo' ass on Xeth server, hook me up on the nickname "Aeterne" and I'll help you if need be. :)

The system that can max out almost everything in eq2 doesn't excist yet. Maybe try to turn on shadows.....

I can run VG @ max @ 1920x1200, in eq2 I have to be carefull what I max out. But VG can be jerky when entering a zone with lots of players running around, but after a few seconds it runs smooth again.

I run VG on Ultra high settings in 2560x1600 in windowed mode, so I bring some of the hitching problem down upon myself :)  If I drop off the ultra high settings, specifically backing of the textures, my hitching almost goes away.  However, I can't live without the eye-candy, so it's a trade-off I make.

This exactly describes my experiences as well.
