I haven't seen anyone dedicate a thread to this so I thought I would start this one up. Here's the question. Should SE expand on transportation options for XIV (add new methods, make it more accessible at all levels, etc.), keep it generally the same or make it more difficult to get around for the sake of realism.

God damn I hope they speed up movement in the game .
It was and is THE most tedious thing about the game, i dont care about the bots the japanese having 1 second faster ping, the graphics(which might have had somethign to do with the speed restrictions , frame rates on old technology and such) but yah, I would love for them to make me feel like I was actually moving in the game... everything else is slow enough, at least let me go from my mog house out of the city in less then 15 mins... after all it is a video game... not real life.... and In 3 hours I want to get something done.... shopping and sending stuff to mules and friends... you could spend a whole night doing this and never get to party... which is its own hassle (add party members walking to meet up and holy shite).... anywhoo rant over... but yah... can we please just get a move on in FF14? Thats all I wanna do; get a move on.
Obviously, you can tell I spent last night buying spells and shite for my other character for 3 hours >.< rawr!
Like I love the game and the feeling of accomplishment... but I don't feel accomplished having walked(then shipped) from Windy to valkrum in an hour and a half... I feel Pissed... really really pissed.
I can walk in real life, SE, please let me do something else in FF14.

The graphics are actually quite beautiful for a game made so long ago.. So , I retract that. God knows I can barely look at WoW... I feel instantly nauseous.

Not to be critical, but this prose is nothing compared to its elder brother.
You are probably right, my laptop for some reason had issues with WOW... and my own distaste for its art style doesnt mean it is not beautiful... I apologize, Im always beating on wow, and Im sure id enjoy it if i could play it :P

I had no Problems with what was in the game. But more options are allways better.
Only thing that really Drove me nuts was the 12 min. Wait for the airships... Honestly Put a second airship in and let us pass each other. A Mid Air waterballon fight would be sweet!
But there was allways teleportation. Just load up the class you hated run outside and Die. Boom tele.
I personaly Woulda loved a Taxi service. Have the "Well trained" Criters Running over the shortest Distance and Jumping off Cliffs would be a sweet ride.

Yeah, I agree transportation does suck in the game. Takes too long to get anywhere in FFXI
Yeah I agree that the waiting for the airship thing was a bit tedious. Although I kinda found it cool that it was live travel times it was still annoying to get there right when the ship was leaving and have to wait the whole time for another one and then wait on the ship while it flew to wherever.
I liked the way it was in FFXI, I could stand for it to be a little bit faster. but NOTHING like WoW, or any of the new MMO's. they are just to fast.
That is one thing I liked about the travel system in FFXI, it actually made the world seem bigger. AND when you where to travel somewhere you actually had to think about it.
In WoW it annoys me that you can be out in the middle of no where, getting ready for a raid. and some dude is lie "whoa need more potions, brb".....runs to town in like 2 minutes and then is ready to go again. Makes the game seem smaller.

I can get almost anywhere in FFXI in 10 minutes. If getting across the world in less than 10 minutes is too slow then I blame microwaves and instant pudding.

If you don't have warp, teleports, chocobo, even flee. Transportation from one place to another can take a bit long. I shouldn't have said that it took too long to get anywhere, but certain places where you have to walk it can be a bit tedious.
I hated how long it took you to run anywhere, yet oddly enough I don't think I would change it.. adds a little bit of realism.

I recently did a 14-day trial of FFXI, since it's been years since I played I wanted to try it out again. One Sunday I spent about six hours grouping, two different three hour chunks. It took the first party roughly 40m to get together. The Valkrune Dunes were owned by San'd Oria (which fortunately for me I was a member of) and the newer player from Windhurst didn't have the outpost warp yet because Windhurst hadn't controlled it since the character was created. Unfortunately this was our healer, so we couldn't start without him/her. And we'd already spent ~15m trying to find a healer, there were no other available.
That is, in my opinion, unacceptable. Sorry. I can understand it taking 15-30m to get somewhere hi level for the first time. But putting something 15-30m away on foot before people have access to faster travel is one of the reasons I opted not to continue my subscription after the time ran out.
Do people really find it fun to run through the same dangerous territory time and again to get somewhere you want to? Seeing the same sights, over and over. There being nothing for you to do but watch your character run? Seriously? Personally, it reminds me of commuting to work. And after doing a commute a couple of times in real life I have no desire to do it again in a virtual world.
So FFXI is not the game for me.
I'm hoping FFXIV will be more friendly in terms of travel options. If not, I'll play another game.
(Alternately they could find a way to make the travel fun; but considering FF's penchent for random encounters as a way to spice up travel I kinda doubt they'll innovate in that way.)
I agree travel was tedious. A balance between WoW and FFXI would be nice. Even with airship passes and money for chocobos it could take 10 to 15 minutes to get somewhere. At low lvls a 30min run through dangerous territory to get somewhere is a bit excessive.
It shouldn't really be unacceptable.
If you knew you were going to party in the Dunes when you got online, you would prepare for it. If I was level 12-13, I usually would log off in Valkurm so I am ready to go. As a healer, he maybe shouldn't have put his LFP sign up in Windy until he got on the boat near SC. That way you wouldnt have felt you waited an additional 20 minutes for him to run.
Playing in Windy, going through all the Zones at low levels to finally get on a boat in Mhaura was very exciting the 1st time through. It felt like I had accomplished some huge things and made me excited to what was ahead. Not to mention you could fish off of the boat, possibly catch a monster, have a pirate skeleton ship board yours. Those experiences were awesome.
The airship just didn't have anything to do while on it, just click your abilities or linkshell chat. Gave me time to talk to others though, which developed that community more, gave me time to plan my day and what things were important to accomplish(i only had 2 days a week, sometimes 3 to play) Just wish there was a thing or 2 else to happen on that airship. I usually tried to bring some crafting items on for the downtime.
14 minutes to wait for any ship is definitely a little long. I would chop it in half or to 5 minutes with a 1 min wait before take off.
I agree, the experiences were cool the first time. It's having to repeat them multiple times that rancles. Potentially multiple times per game session.
A couple of comments on that idea that players "should" prepare to party in lowbie areas.
1. Most new players won't know how to prepare, or that they should prepare, until they're more experienced (if they stick around that long.)
2. A commute is a commute, it doesn't matter when you do it. If I commuted to work at 9 P.M. to sleep there so I could be ready to go in the morning I'm still commuting. I'm just doing it at 9P.M. instead of 8A.M.
I like how it was in FFXI..... While on the airship i could go make a sandwich or something and get back and play. I hope you can raise Chocobo's too, I quit again before I got a chance for mine to hatch.

Transportation will have to be looked at if SE wants to succeed with this mmo. Speed will be increased, for a certainty and there will not be as many things to hinder travel like airship waits. Im pretty sure SE knows there is now a lot more competition out there then there was in 2001, less people are going to be content walking around for 3 hours to little avail.

I stopped reading after what I highlighted because FFXI is a is considered a success. SE even said that themselves. So I am guessing this is a wow'bie who judges every MMO's to WoW's freakish subs.
There will not be another WoW ever. To many devs have copied that formula, and the player base is to spread out for another multi-multi-million sub game.
You dont need that kind of numbers for a sucessfull game. There is enough FF fans out there to make FFXIV successfull (If its content is good of course). I can promise you traveling will not make or break this game.

You could and can get anywhere you want in XI after a time in literally a couple of minutes. The thing is that you have to actually work to get those options first. It's made so you would have to explore the territory before you can just access it through a warp without even have been there. It's pretty much like saying why couldn't you start out with access to an airship and full world access when you first start playing an FF game. You work for and get your ways around after a time.
If they even had the same options in XIV, it would be a big plus. The only way it could get any easier, is to just skip any exploration at all and have access to every area in the world with no need to ever travel on foot.
Also, for those saying it's unacceptable for the travel time from Windy? Once the person actually gets there, they just set their HP and their good. When they travel there the first time, I don't see how it's so horrible to have to wait for that. If they die over and over, then we have a problem. And about the ferry travel times, don't us fishers get screwed enough already and then we'd only have 5 minutes to get our fish?
To be the best, you must help each other become the best.

I'm a little half and half. I believe that the transportation should increase.
In FF11 the lands were really big and it took forever to walk around, also trying to dodge mobs that chase you forever isn't fun.
I did like the chocobos, but I didn't like how there was a time limit to it.
But what I really liked was the boats and ships, I liked how it felt like you were actualy travling to another continent. And also the pirates that would attack .
All and all I think they should do something about traveling on land but across water and air is fine where it's at.

In all honesty waiting for your healer there isn't a developers issue. It is a player base issue.
First off if that healer wanted to party they should have been in Valkrum or Selbina ready to go. I recently started a new character that I leveled to 20 from scratch after playing for almost 6 years. I didn't have OPs, I didn't have ports, and I walked from Windy to the dunes because I wanted to party. That is what you do. You don't sit in Windy and wait for an invite to the dunes if you don't have a way to get their quickly. That is the players fault
If it was the only person who was available that would party with you then sorry, tough luck mate. If that is all that was available then you picked a shitty time to party. You either need to wait longer or take what is available to you (which you did). Again, this isn't the developers fault, they can't control who is available to party at any given time. Could they have put something in place so your healer could get to you faster? Umm ... they did. It is called OP warping. You are from just about anywhere in Windy to the dunes in like 5 minutes.
If you want some game where you can click your heels three times and be anywhere you want then, as you admit, this game is not for you, but it is a very easy game if you work for want you want in the game.
I'm hoping to see them speed up travel a bit as well. Little things like lowering the time between airship rides, or maybe a couple more teleport's here and there would be nice. I'd really love to see them allow players to have their own chocobo at some point, could be one of those end-game tasks to breed a fast choco.
