Sorry, but common sense post time here:

Computer games fall into the category of "entertainment expenses" right? It's an optional leisure activity.

So, ponder some logic here if you would....

Night at the movies, regal cinemas regular price: $9.50 for maybe a 2 hour film, not counting gas and any concession stand purchases. Cost per hour: $4.75

Netflix 2 movies at a time/unlimited plan: $14.99/month - realistically this covers approximately 4-6 movies a month, total time watching, 8-12 hrs.  Cost per hour: $1-$2

Average paperback book purchase from Barnes&Noble or say Amazon.Com: $8-10, reading time variable but probably 2-8 hours; hardcover: $25+ similar reading times. Cost per hour: $1++

Basic cable TV package: Time Warner DIgital Cable package: $50/month. Cost per hour: too widely variable to measure, based on viewing time

Membership at a Sportsman's Club or most Golf/Tennis/sporting places: $20+/month.Cost per hour:too widely variable to measure

Offline computer game such as Dawn of War2, $50; campaign is about 20hrs of offline content. Cost per hour: $2.50

MMO subscription fee: $5-$15/month....If you play an average of 1hr/day on weekdays and double that on weekends...36hrs/month....cost per hour is less than $.50/hour

Get the idea here folks? MMO's are *cheap* entertainment for the time you spend on them. It's entirely up to you how much you value that entertainment and what your budget is, but don't delude yourself into thinking that it's expensive.

I'm currently playing ~$10/month for a LotRO sub and would gladly pay more for more content/live events/interaction etc.

The standard for p2p games over the last few years seems to be $50 for the game and $15/month (or less with multi-month purchase plans).  I play LotRO and feel these charges are fair for the entertainment value I receive.   I would also consider other p2p games at this price level.  However, as soon as RMTs are brought into the picture, I lose all interest (and please do not start a flame war over the benefits/detriments of a RMT system in a sub game).

Hedonismbot: Your latest performance was as delectable as dipping my bottom over and over into a bath of the silkiest oils and creams.

I'm in agreement with this poster.

I can see that the hourly cost of a MMORPG is *cheap* in comparison to most other activites, but I wouldn't mind paying more for a really good game ( and that's subjective, what's good to you may not be good to me and visa versa ).

I'm well off, so $50, or even $75 wouldn't be too much to pay for a really great game ( plus that kind of cost would keep out most of the crowd playing on their Mother's credit card ).

So if any Devs are reading these posts - "Make better games!! We'll pay more for them!!"

While making better games is certainly a step in the right direction, I have to say that some of the worst parts of most games are beyond the control of the devs.  I'd pay $100 a month for a game in which every single person playing, without exception, was a mature adult who could spell, where I never had to see "WRU?  RU Hott? ASL?" kind of stupidity.  Even the best games in the world can be utterly ruined by rampantly stupid players.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

Heh something I can completely agree with, but then the internet being what it is, you'd get the ones who deliberately acted up after getting past the filters/screens just to be jackasses :)

And I'd be more than happy to support a 3-strikes and your account is permanently cancelled policy for them too. :)

Of course at $100 you'd get like 20 people but oh well. $100 is probably excessive but 50-75 i'd do.

WHat else do many spend money on? How about a REAL LIFE? Food, hydro, internet, car payments, house payments, insurances...sorry kid, but once you move outta moms house, you will see there are other places that could use $100/month.
As for how much I would pay...nothing. The current crop of MMOs are hardly better than the F2P models. Give me something like SWG-pre NGE, or UO-pre AoS, then I would probibly pay upto 25/month. But till then, at least to me, nothing is worth the standard

    $15/month charge.

    Talisman fails on the following:

    1) Assumption = good job in guessing that i'm a kid . . . only if you knew what I did in RL . . . Guessing/assumptions is an intelligent approach to life (sarcasm) I wish doctors took up that approach, then we'd have no reason to pay for CT scans/biochemistries/etc' all the money would go to medical malpractive lawsuits (hey doc my stomach hurts . . . i'm just going to guess it's appendicitis)

    Other points.

    2) Based on what Ericbeisen posted later on, people blow money on bullshit entertainment, i'd gladly pay $100 a month but i'd also have no netflix and of course no gym membership (cuz i wouldn't be there). In reality, p2p subscription, is easily the best $ per hour of entertainment. (see point 4)

    3) the question was how much would you pay for an MMO and i'd pay $100 given the right circumstances, if i'm a hardcore gamer, which i used to be, playing 30+ hours a week, then id definitely pay $100. it's 80 cents per hour for amazing entertainment . . . better than any other rate. I'm goign to play golf tomorrow, it's going to cost me at least $22 for 3-4 hours of entertainment . . . a shit return compared to games . . Ericbeisen proves this point.

    4) What i meant by what else do you spend your money on is based on "if you are a hardcore gamer" i guess if you're not then clearly you wouldn't spend $100.

    5) $100 is a bit excessive though, i'll admit that, but $75 is decent. I don't think i'll have the time to play video games enough to justify the cost of $100 or $75 but i'd be willing given the no bots/ebayers and of course i'd have the time.

Furthermore, i bet if people made a huge effort to streamline the cost of food, you could save tons of money. I mean my spending no food can vary so much in one month. If you cook and buy cheaply and what not you can easily save $50 a month . . . of course it varies on how much you spent before.

yeah talisman . . . stop assuming and seriously $100 is even a pittance for a player who plays over 100 hours a month. The amount of joy people have playing MMO's is usually so great that the hourly rate is head and shoulders above any other. I guess the utility per hour of entertainment per $ is best with MMO (of course if you get most utility out of mmo and i'm also saying the utility is fixed which it isn't)

    Cryomatrix
p.s. and i'm an idiot for wasting 10 minutes writing this post lol . . . I guess it's okay because i'll go upstairs (from the basement of course) go drink a daddy bought red bull and get back to my gaming.
