some of that requires a team to complete, some can be soloed but need a team to start. (any any of the solo tf runners. Grab 4-8 people then kick them and solo the tf on your own)
There it is, you said it and that's exactly why I don't want the soloer mentality in my games.
So are all solo'ers jerks then? Just asking since you seen to equate jerk behavior described above with "soloer mentality"?
Someone else said it above. The MMO market has grown up. For many of us who started in MMO's with EQ, we have gotten older. many have gotten married and have kids. Along with that comes homes and life responsibility and things that come up. I am lucky if I get 1-2 nights of uninterrrupted game play a week (and I do not have kids).
So when it comes to the soloing versus group question, I have to ask myself: "Will I play a game where I can solo and do 90% of the stuff on my own; or will I play a game where I have to do 90% of the stuff in groups, all the while causing my groups to wait while I go AFK for this or that?"
And I don't mean AFK for 3 minutes for a BIO or a drink...I mean 30 minutes to cook dinner, 2 hours to mow the grass, 15 minutes to answer the door or take an important phone call. And do I want to do this day in and day out, repeatedly, over and over again? And do I want to play a game where there is a good chance all 5-8 people in my group will be doing the SAME thing?
The answer is no. It is not that I do not like grouping...I love it. But I simply do not have the time to commit like I did 10 years ago. However, I like the community that an MMo brings and the social aspect and honestly, only poorly designed MMO's focus their social aspect around groups.
Thanks for the laugh, you and your excuses, like your the only one with things to do beside gaming. i get it, you take 30 mins to cook diner, why do you have to do it in the middle of a play session, eat and after go play. Mow the grass, in the evening? 15 min to answer the door, what does it say on it, free donuts? We all have stuff to do, the thing I use is call a schedule.
Let me explain you how it works for most of the adult gaming community (since your not but think you are)
Monday to Thursday
Finish work between 4-5pm get the kids on the way home.
Cook dinner between 5-6pm
Play with the kids between 6-7pm
Gives kids the bath between 7-8pm and send them to bed
Play games between 8-12pm
You have a 4 hours window to play your games 4 times a week (16hours/week) sure you do not play every night, you have to be with you wife/girlfriend.
On the weekend you even have more free time to play.
If you come back and say that this is not how it works, it is because you have none of those things or you have no idea how schedule your time.
You ignored the comment about jerk behavior relating to solo'ers so I guess that is a yes. You think all solo'ers are jerks and are out to ruin your precious game.
The point is not everyone has YOUR schedule and not everyone has a job that ends at 5:00 so just because it works for you, doesn't mean it works for everyone. And for those of us who do not have the time to play like we use too, games that at least recognize the solo'er are a welcomed respite from the "play 12 hours a day to get anything done" ones of the past.
Ok I will answer your question about the jerk part, I didn't answer because you miss understood what I said and I didn't want to start a flame war.
I never said soloer were jerks, I said I didn't not want the soloer Mentality which is very different. You know the type of soloer who group with you only if they need something and will kick you out of the group as soon as it is done. Everyone likes to solo from time to time, I just don't like when you can solo the whole game, because at the end when you need to team to PvP, Raid or whatever, people usualy don't know how to play their toon in group or they build it for solo play.
Get a life you freaking Gamer.....no no, you don't understand, I'm a Gamer, I have many lives!!
A clarification from Cryptic's latest State of the Game:
"There was a BIG miscommunication in a recent interview where the writer made it sound like there wasn’t enough content for solo players to get to the level cap. While we have been putting a greater emphasis on getting group content into the game, players can easily solo their way to the level cap if that’s how they want to play. We hope this clears things up."
I do like soloing a lot in mmorpgs, I do solo as much as possible and group up only for instances, raids and quests that are really not soloable. Easy to say I should not play mmorpg's but single player rpg's just dont have the huge amount of added content over time and they usually do not have a social environment.
While i respect your play style and how you want to play i don't feel they should cater to you and change the game to the way you like. Its not like you don't have options there are online rpg's that don't cost monthly that have the option of playing online whith people or not dlc or player created content.
And if you want the social environment that kind of is grouping, but if you just want to talk online you got a cell phone or xfire.
To someone who favors grouping, my response is:
"While I respect your play style and how you want to play I don't feel they should cater to you and change the game to the way you like. Its not like you don't have options...."
To all the soloers, I wouldn't worry about this. Devs have said in other interviews that CO will be very solo-friendly overall. With open beta just around the corner, the NDA is sure to drop soon and beta testers will be able to say more specific things about how soloable (or not) the various kinds of content in CO are. For now I would just advise you not to let Jack's puzzling and profoundly ironic comments concern you.
well said, I agree!

Well, the idea that it is more group oriented actually made my interest level go up a notch, but it was quickly squashed by the comments that its uses an action oriented combat style well suited to console games.

Ah, the endless feud between solo players and group players. It is something which will never end. Neither has need of the other when they are playing in a game as their play styles are exclusive of one another.
I tend to enjoy interacting and playing with groups more because they aren't running off program code and thus predictable. To be honest, most of the most entertaining play has come from laughing my butt off on stupid things players have done or accomplished. Done solo, you cannot truly share in the experience with others, so aside from bragging rights, it seems hollow.
That said, I like the fact CO will have lots of Group based content. It is also nice there will be solo leveling methods so one can play at any time and have something to do.
Perhaps they should include rating system to identify the best or designed player intent. I mean since it would seem MMO is no longer to be understood as actual multiplayer, they could just add the standard identifies as to how many people the game is designed for during play. You know like offline games state Single player, Multiplayer 1-4, Multiplayer 2-6, etc.

It doesn't clear anything up. Every game could put 1 mob that was soloable for every level into their game and claim "You can solo all the way to the level cap!" ... Sure, if you don't mind grinding the same mob 500,000 times each level.
I do like soloing a lot in mmorpgs, I do solo as much as possible and group up only for instances, raids and quests that are really not soloable. Oh that was never what I meant to say, a lot of the current mmorpg's perfectly match my play-style which makes the need to ask to change games to the way I like them unneeded. (I think that also indicates there are quite a lot of people who like this playstyle)
Also the social environment I meant was the player avatars running around, chatting in channels and sharing the same interest in the same game. (the mmorpg you are currently playing)
I think you also have to agree with me that there is a difference in quality between online rpgs and mmorpgs with monthly fees, don't get me wrong Im not saying all mmorpg's should be solo games, ofcourse not, but I'm quite happy with the current state of most mmorpgs when it comesto the solo content atm.
"Soloing" does not mean you always play alone. It means that at times there it just makes sense to play alone and that you can do it if you want. My case in particular is that I play during "off" hours sometimes and it is hard to find people to play with. It is also hard to find people that I WANT to play with at times. It does not mean I won't play with people but that I just want to play the game without the drama that some players bring to their game. So, soloing is just a means to one's own ends. It is not the only means. However, it would be unfortunate to have an MMO not include the abiltiy to solo ever.
Why the hell do people bother soloing in a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME. Go play an RPG if you want to make grouping pointless because you want to "solo". Sure you may not have time, but you could still just team up with someone in the same area and knock a couple quests off.
Many people seem to be confused as to why a solo player would want to play a MMOG, after all, as you and many others assert, its a massively MULTIPLAYER online game, why would a soloer be interested, and why should a developer cater to them?
Well, there are other aspects to MMOGs other than the social grouping aspect that many people are interested in. One in particular is the type of persistence and long term character development that MMOG's provide that draws them. Soloing in MMOG's is a perfectly viable playstyle, as is anything else.
So with that said, I would ask that you and other user's respect that, and let's not derail this discussion into an attack on other gamers' playstyles. Thanks!
Most of those said soloer are the type to burn through content in a month and since they only solo, when they hit max lvl they have nothing left to do anymore so they leave for another game. So please, spare us your argument about soloing. It's because of soloer that those game are so easy today, everything has to be made so a single player can do everything.
Really? Where is your proof to back these claims?
Single player games manage to have challenging content, it's not our fault MMO developers are clueless on how to design content.
Yes you are right, single player games are made to be challenging. How can you make a MMO challenging if you can do everything solo. Let say you go for a typical quest to kill 10 bears and you solo them, how can the dev make it harder to kill those same 10 bears with a group of 6, it would have to be instance like CoX does.
Another thing they said, mobs in the world should scale with your group, if you solo and you aggro 1 mob you will be fine and if you are a group of 3, the same mobs is suppose to call for backup or go aggro other mobs in the map.
You didn't answer my question. Where is your proof to back up those claims?
I played World of Warcraft for 2 years. 98% of it solo. I got a Hunter and a Druid up to 60. It's pretty obvious that I didn't do either in a months time let alone 6 months time. It took me over 6 months to get my City of Heroes character to level 42, which isn't even level cap. Soloers tend to be casual players for the most part, if anyone burns through content, it's people who focus on raiding and grouping.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
Hm, one of my friends is in the beta, and he soloed frequently, so it must be possible. I hear some powersets, especially ranged are stronger than melee, and with some you can solo well, while other powersets are more supportive. I would not trust words from beta too much either way. Details about powers can always change.

Champions Online releases in 6 weeks. There arent going to be any major differences at this point.
On topic - I played CoH again during the free week anniversary event a couple weeks ago and it was rough finding groups. There were absolutely no groups below level 20 and above level 20 it was nothing but AE farm groups. Snore! Uninstalled it after 3 days.
When CoH was in its prime I had some of the worst groups ever in any MMO I have played. I dont want to be forced into more of that.
In general, I solo while Im looking for a group. I played FF11 and I quit because I would look for a group for hours and do nothing because soloing was not possible, I will never ever go through that again.
Most of the content is definitely solo-able. Much of it scales when you bring in more heroes, but major elements like the Nemesis system and the UNITY missions can all be played by solo players. There are a few areas that we recommend more than one hero undertake, but they are far from the majority of the content.
It isn't easy to strike a balance between those that want to play the whole game by them, selves and those that want challenges for a team of heroes. We're constantly working on making both experiences better, so thank you to everyone for your feedback and support.
I group when one is readily available, otherwise I go it alone. Patience is not one of my virtues so standing around for 45 minutes waiting for inconsiderate people does not appeal to me. On the flip side, I like a challenge. Finding ways to tackle content not necessarily intended for a solo player is fun for me. As for the neverending crusade from those who scream "why don't you go play a single player rpg?!" (most often appearing in all caps, mind you) I respond by saying I enjoy the option of grouping when I want, as well as the interactions outside of direct content.
